OVGWOV . . and He Went down with them . . . and was subject unto them . . . and Iesus increased in wisdom, in age, and in grace before God and men. Luke II 51-52 The theme of this year's KNIGHT is taken from the above Biblical quotation. The pattern of Naza- reth , as seen from these few lines, has been followed by educators down through the centuries. Since the purpose of St. Mel is to educate good Catholic men and prepare them for later life, and be- cause St. Ioseph did such an excel- lent job in teaching Iesus, we are taught in the shadows of the over- whelming influence of Nazareth. Education back in Iesus' time, symbolized by the scroll on the cover, has gradually evolved into the modern educational tech- niques, as symbolized by the flam- ing torch super-imposed on the scroll. Although the teaching tech- nique may be different in this Atomic Age, the ones on whom the technique is exercised have re- mained the same. Human nature has been the same wherever we look among the pages of history. Christ, in His Human Nature, walk- ing through the halls of St. Mel would scarcely be noticed as other than one of the boys . As one of the boys in our school, He would pass through every phase of school life that we do. He would learn that any individual school can not possibly be pointed out as the best . He would also have all the fun that we had in passing through St. Mel and having St. Mel pass through us. Truly, there is some sentiment involved in graduating and every graduating class anywhere should experience it. Christ must have experienced it when He left St. Ioseph to go out into the World. He probably even became misty-eyed when He thought of the good times He and His foster-father must have had in the little carpentry shop: although He would not have admitted it.

rovwlly we gbechcafe Qi fi, yogi: ,lgowfcr The class of 1956 wishes to dedicate its yearbook to Mr. Bowler. We have seen the effect of his quiet influence throughout our years here. He is the type of man who believes that example produces more good effects than words. He not only believes it, but also lives it. By frequently being seen in church, he has probably done more good than all the words that have been said in all the religion classes of all our years at St. Mel. A sense of humor like his creates friendliness as no other attitude can. A man cannot be completely serious all his life and say he has lived cr full, rich life. Mr. Bowler has been to us a man who is able to influence by a quiet word and an example here and there. A man's character does not change much. Mr. Bowler was the type of man twenty-five years ago, when he was just starting at St. Mel, that he is to us now. He employed the same type of influence during his many years of basketball coaching for St. Mel's grammar and high school teams. Since 1928 he has taught commercial subjects in this same man- ner and still is doing so. ln many ways he is just, as St. Ioseph Was, an average guy. And so, we are dedicating this book to an average guy - a guy who likes good friends and a good joke. We hope to be just as average as he is. After all, St. Ioseph gained heaven: what more can we gain? Page G
