Luke II 51-52 The theme of this year's KNIGHT is taken from the above Biblical quotation. The pattern of Naza- reth , as seen from these few lines, has been followed by educators down through the centuries. Since the purpose of St. Mel is to educate good Catholic men and prepare them for later life, and be- cause St. Ioseph did such an excel- lent job in teaching Iesus, we are taught in the shadows of the over- whelming influence of Nazareth. Education back in Iesus' time, symbolized by the scroll on the cover, has gradually evolved into the modern educational tech- niques, as symbolized by the flam- ing torch super-imposed on the scroll. Although the teaching tech- nique may be different in this Atomic Age, the ones on whom the technique is exercised have re- mained the same. Human nature has been the same wherever we look among the pages of history. Christ, in His Human Nature, walk- ing through the halls of St. Mel would scarcely be noticed as other than one of the boys . As one of the boys in our school, He would pass through every phase of school life that we do. He would learn that any individual school can not possibly be pointed out as the best . He would also have all the fun that we had in passing through St. Mel and having St. Mel pass through us. Truly, there is some sentiment involved in graduating and every graduating class anywhere should experience it. Christ must have experienced it when He left St. Ioseph to go out into the World. He probably even became misty-eyed when He thought of the good times He and His foster-father must have had in the little carpentry shop: although He would not have admitted it. Confen fs SCAOOI Pg. We have seen the effect of his quiet influence throughout our years here. He is the type of man who believes that example produces more good effects than words. He not only believes it, but also lives it. By frequently being seen in church, he has probably done more good than all the words that have been said in all the religion classes of all our years at St. Mel. A sense of humor like his creates friendliness as no other attitude can. A man cannot be completely serious all his life and say he has lived cr full, rich life. Mr. Bowler has been to us a man who is able to influence by a quiet word and an example here and there. A man's character does not change much. Mr. Bowler was the type of man twenty-five years ago, when he was just starting at St. Mel, that he is to us now. He employed the same type of influence during his many years of basketball coaching for St. Mel's grammar and high school teams. Since 1928 he has taught commercial subjects in this same man- ner and still is doing so. ln many ways he is just, as St. Ioseph Was, an average guy. And so, we are dedicating this book to an average guy - a guy who likes good friends and a good joke. We hope to be just as average as he is. After all, St. Ioseph gained heaven: what more can we gain? Page G . 1 r f r Z, M 5 , mf. My Kb x -I XQIN, 'W 15' 1 . x at kwin . ' N xff-xx I, X A X x - . mi , , V 3 ' Q2 1 ' ,K gym, 3 6 YI, ki r . Principal of St. Mel High School Over his two year span as director, Brother Camillus has fulfilled the prophecy of many men by his hard work to better the school. Besides keeping a watchful eye on his Knights, he also contributes to their spiritual development by a program of monthly Mass and Communion. During his two year reign, the student body has grown in number, and school organizations have flourished. This is all due to his immense interest in the welfare of the students. An educator most of his priestly life - Monsignor Purcell has advanced the cause of Christian education as few men have, in following this mandate from the Nazarene. Under his guiding hand St. Mel high school has grown from obscure humble begin- nings to a very prominent position in the field of Christian education. Headed by the president, Frank Quilici, they spearheaded a drive for the safe and sane loading of the C.T.A. busses on the trip to and from school. The council, together with Brother Mark, senior moderator, made arrangements for that most Wonderful night of the year, the annual senior prom. This was a fitting tribute to top a year of fun and accomplishments. The rnelodious tones of the St. Mel band are a familiar sound to the ears of Chicago West siders. Almost every night some section of the marching band, the concert band or the dance band is holding forth in the Kildare band room. Through hard work, sweat and practice the orchestra has had a suc- cessful season. Page 75 On October 15 and 16 the Meldramatic Club presented Herman Wouk's Caine Mutiny Court Martial. This Broadway hit concerned the Court martial proceedings against a young naval lieu- tenant, Lt. Maryk, who re- lieved his captain amidst a harrowing typhoon on the grounds that the captain was psycotic in the crisis and leading the ship and its crew to destruction. In the trial the psychopathic tendencies of the captain were brought out by the defense attorney Greenwald and an acquittal won for Marek. 2144214 M914 36135 of ary Come back to the days of Mary. Sound like a long journey? Not with the Meldramatic Club. In fact they went back even further, back to the creation of Adam. Then down thru the ages from the tempting of Adam to the tempting of Modern Man. The story was narrated by Dave Mann and Bill O'Neill. In the part of Modern Man, loe Tessitore was tempted by Leach- ery, lerry Chuman: a Money Changer, Ralph Tardi: and Scientific Atheism, lohn Guzialek. Ken Ianowiak as the Prophet fought hard to save Man From Satan, fiendishly played by Iohn Cazzato. The story of the Nativity was unfolded by the three shepherds: Ted Russel, Bob Gibbons, and Tom Burgard. All this was supplemented by a chorus of the Faithful: Don Frede, Iohn Herlihy, Bill Lindsay, Bill Kernan, Ed Novotny, Sal Fallucco, Ioe Napoleon, Ron Peters, and lim Murphy. These were opposed by the chorus of the Damned: Iohn Bellon, Bob Pirsein, Mike Laatz, Iohn Errera, Ed Leuthner, Chester Ugansky, Ed Cargill, Tom Sullivan, and Guy Marella. The production was well accepted at the Chicago Drama Festival and the following awards received: Ioe Tessitore won a Gold Medal and a one year scholarship to Loyola University: Ralph Tardi a Bronze Medal: Bill O'Neill a Bronze Medal and a one year scholar- ship to Iohn Carroll University: Dave Mann an alternate scholarship to Quincy College. These achievements can be relived by anyone who browses through these pages many years from now. The staff began to assemble data and pictures in September and by May they had assembled this book. It is only a record of events as seen by a camera and it is missing the spirit that accom- panied these events. It is impossible to record spirit on pages. Any success the Knight Staff might have realized is due in a very large part to the work of Mr. Iohn Cronin, who directed them. Top, left to right: I. Petrovich, H. Trudeau, editor, I. Si. mel journahsfs The activities and interests of the student body at St. Mel are the source of material for the Observer. lt was changed this year from a sixteen page quarterly to an eight page bi-monthly maga- zine. This change was effected by the new editorial staff which over took the tedious job of composing and editing the copy of every reporter on the staff and producing a magazine which is well organized in every possible facet. Moderated by Mr. Glenn Waterloo, the paper took astound- ing strides in upholding the veracity and integrity of a publica- tion where religious, cultural, scholastic, and social backgrounds are the characteristics of a mode which has a goal that aims for perfection. The record does not really show the hard work and determination the coaches, boys and managers, put forth to bring home a winning season. The fine running of Ray Halicki and Don Black kept the foes working hard to eke out a victory. Mike Guzaldo and Bill Murphy alternated to show their fine passing abilities. There is also much to be said for the fine line play of Mike Moch, Ioe Mota, and Richard Romeo. Page 99 oPA 7-l'osA fers Sophomore team under the masterful coaching of Mr. Cahill came out of the seasoneven with 3-3 record. Bob Beshk, fullback, carried most of the scoring power but there is much to be said for the fine quarterbacking of Ed Bradley. The opposition ran into trouble with Iim Quinn on the line. The 2-l record the Freshman team produced shows that Mr. lones is a very capable and well equipped man to be coaching football. The outstanding play of Q.B. Plesha and his determination to score was an inspiration for the rest of the team. Plesha shared scoring honors with fullback McArdle. T I Di Buono and Halicki end a St. Phillip advance mfsifcy ains xloerience The gridders of St. Mel High School have earned and have learned much this past season. They have earned two victories for their Alma Mater despite apparent hard luck. They lost ball games which could have gone either way. In spite oi their so called 1osing season , these men of Mel acquired an atti- tude oi a sportsman. They learned what the word defeat means to a sports- man. After each loss, the gridders displayed more blood and guts in the practice sessions and once more raised their hopes for victory. They know what the word work means. They also know that in order to have a winning team, you must have eager beavers, who are willing to give all that it takes to have a victorious team. Below is a list of the hard fought football games. Remember scores count, but sportsmanship counts more on this earth and in heaven. PRE SEASON Holy Trinity . . . .... O St. Mel .... . . . Seen below are several more popular and talented members of the heavyweight basket- ball team. They have contributed much to the success of the season. The team will also agree with the student body that Larry Kinsella and Frank Quilici con- tributed to the team's success. Larry with his 212 pts. for the season and Frank with his fine playmaking. Frank and Larry know that it takes three other fellows to make a team, also, without the other fellows practicing day in and day out, the starting five wouldn't have been as good as they were. All nineteen fellows deserve the credit for a fair season. The factor that wove nineteen individuals into an integral unit was Coach Bob Luksta. He came to St. Mel after an illustrious college and professional career, and ably filled the shoes of forrner Coach Iim Weaver. K-lil o 5 ni8fA is Sow eibeferm inafion ST. The Knights won their last three ballgames of the season to show the Catholic League that they were no push-overs. The Knights won 5 out ot 12 games, but three of those games were lost by a total of 6 points. This shows the fight and determination that lasted throughout the season. Even when they were down 16 points in one game they fought back to win by six. The spirit that prevailed throughout the season is one that prevails over the entire student body, call on us to do a job and we will do our best. The student body is proud ot their team and have no regrets to the way the team played. The boys proved they had sportsmanship and ability. They gave their best and that is all we ask. The Flys had a rough season winning one out of thirteen. Coach Crowley feels that they have done their best and have devel- oped into fine basketball players and that some of the boys will help strengthen the lightweight team. The Bantams had a good season. They won seven and lost seven. They played excellent ball all season and lost to only one team twice. They have fine ballplayers that should make the heavies without any trouble. These two teams are not out to win cham- pionships but are out only to learn the funda- mentals ot the game.
