HITIHTY POPE PIUS XII'S OFFICIAL MARIAN YEAR PRAYER Enraptured by the splendor of your heavenly beauty, and impelled by the anxieties of the world, we cast ourselves into your arms, O Immaculate Mother of Iesus and our Mother, Mary, confident of finding in your most loving heart appeasement of our ardent desires, and a safe harbor from the tempests which beset us on every side. Though degraded by our faults and overwhelmed by infinite misery, we admire and praise the peerless richness of sublime gifts with which God has filled you, above every other mere creature, from the first moment of your Conception until the day on which, after your Assumption into heaven. He crowned you Queen of the Universe. O crystal Fountain of faith, bathe our minds with the eternal truths! O fragrant Lily of all holiness, captivate our hearts with your heavenly perfume. O Conqueress of evil and death, inspire in us a deep horror of sin which makes the soul detestable to God and a slave of hell! O well-beloved of God, hear the ardent cry which rises up from every heart in this year dedicated to you. Bend tenderly over our aching wounds. Convert the wicked, dry the tears of the afflicted and oppressed, comfort the poor and humble, quench hatreds, sweeten harshness, safeguard the flower of purity in youth, protect the holy Church, make all men feel the attraction of Christian goodness. ln your name, resounding harmoniously in heaven, may they recognize that they are brothers, and that the nations are members of one family, upon which may there shine forth the sun of a universal and sincere peace. Receive. O Most Sweet Mother, our humble supplications and above all obtain for us that. one day, happy with you, we may repeat before your throne that hymn which today is sung on earth around your altars: You are all beautiful, O Mary! You are the glory, you are the joy, you are the honor of our people! Amen. C5 years indulgence? On the feast of the Immaculate Conception, December 8, 1953, Pope Pius XII proclaimed the first Marian Year, a year devoted especially to the Mother of God for the cause of world peace. Because peace is the strongest desire of youth, the seniors of St. Mel are fortunate in being able to graduate during a year dedicated to Mary, the one person who can make peace a reality. It identifies them with a cause and a belief that can save the World from the destiny that a god- less ideology is forcing upon it. This is the year of Mary. It is a year for the reaffirmation and the strengthening of a Catholic faith that remains the one, true answer to the problems of our day. 1 Page 18

The Senior Council, composed of two representatives from each senior room and the senior class officers began functioning early in the school year under the guidance of Brother Iohn Michael, the moderator. Throughout the school year the council met weekly, sometimes more often if the situa- tions on hand warranted such action. These meetings, for the most part, were run without faculty supervision, and although the usual go :md humor that is part of most meetings of this type was quite often in evidence, it never interfered with the business at hand. The members of the council were sincerely interested in a better senior department and they acted accordingly. The council succeeded in promoting two ex :ellent dances: the senior dance, and the prom. They organized the senior attendance at the Alumni Banquet, and, in general, served their purpose throughout the year in a fashion worthy of the highest praise.
