These words, taken from the core of our Catholicity, the Mass, set the theme for the 1954 KNIGHT. The book that you are about to page through will review. through the media of pictures and the written word, the entire school year at St. Mel. It will take you into the classrooms, rooms that have been the scene of innumerable sessions of religion, history, mathematics and science. You will be taken back to the football fields, the basketball courts, and the many nooks and crannies of St. Mel East and West that serve as headquarters for the countless activities. It has been a great and wonderful year for St. Mel. Our school has taken its position among the cream of the crop. In spirit and activity we can honestly say that we are the best. We hope to take you back to September and the thirty-eighth reawakening of a great school. You will catch a glimpse of the nervous freshmen and the cocky seniors. You will relive the foot- ball games, the Homecoming festivities and the birth of what was destined to be a truly great basketball season. When you get to the section devoted to the student body, you will be confronted with a sea of faces: some you will recog- nize and others will be just what they are, faces. Yet, everyone is an integral part of St. Mel. Somewhere along the way you will have to stop and wonder. This book, with so many pictures and faces, and stories about so many events - how could all of these things have been accomp- lished? Was it just 52 Catholic men, a few office workers, 1500 teenagers, and two brick buildings? There had to be something else. There are larger schools than St. Mel, much larger. But they haven't got what we have. Where else can you find the spirit that is St. Mel? Where else can you find a school that could fill a book like this with so many wonderful things? We believe that after looking through this book every Knight will have a greater appreciation for his school. The seniors will probably appreciate it most. In a very short time they will be leaving it all. The freshmen are lucky. If they realize what they have now, they have three more years to live it and count their blessings. If they accept St. Mel for what it is and for what it can do for them, then the next three years will certainly be their happiest. That undefinable thing we call spirit has made this year possible. Now we are nearing the end and soon it will all be over. When you close the cover on this book you will know why we are so proud of our school and why so many nice things have come our way. St. Mel has accomplished great things in the past and will continue in the same way as long as we do all things Through Him, and with Him, and in Him. For nine months out of the year it is their second home. They study in its classrooms, play in its gymnasium, eat in its cafeteria, cmd walk through its corridors. And through all this the building doesn't change. It remains only brick and mortar and wood. St. Mel can never be defined as just a building on a corner. It derives its life and spirit from the students. Without them it would be only a building. With them it becomes a living, thriving, institution: drawing from s through the doors the very spirit that keeps th it alive. e men who pas 04nd is Sfuden is Q -.M - : . K X ,gf R? Pastor of St. Mel Parish Because of his avid interest in the education of Catholic youth and especially because of his interest in the men of St. Mel, Monsignor Purcell has won a place in the hearts of everyone connected with the school. Over the years it has been his interest and desire to help that have meant so much to our school. He has watched St. Mel grow from a small West Side high school to one ot the largest and best known institutions in the country. And throughout his tenure as pastor ot this great parish he has aided the Christian Brothers in making St. Mel High School an integral part of his charge. BROTHER I. DAMIAN, F.S.C. Director of St. Mel High School Brother Damian is the type of director and the type of man of whom all Knights may be proud. He has combined knowledge and common sense with an altable personality that has made him a friend ot the faculty and students. Under the guidance ot Brother Damian, St. Mel has taken its place among the outstanding high schools in the country. Because he has made it possible for everyone connected with St. Mel to be justly proud ot his school, for this reason more than any other, we shall always be grateful to the man who guides her destiny. HITIHTY POPE PIUS XII'S OFFICIAL MARIAN YEAR PRAYER Enraptured by the splendor of your heavenly beauty, and impelled by the anxieties of the world, we cast ourselves into your arms, O Immaculate Mother of Iesus and our Mother, Mary, confident of finding in your most loving heart appeasement of our ardent desires, and a safe harbor from the tempests which beset us on every side. Though degraded by our faults and overwhelmed by infinite misery, we admire and praise the peerless richness of sublime gifts with which God has filled you, above every other mere creature, from the first moment of your Conception until the day on which, after your Assumption into heaven. He crowned you Queen of the Universe. O crystal Fountain of faith, bathe our minds with the eternal truths! O fragrant Lily of all holiness, captivate our hearts with your heavenly perfume. O Conqueress of evil and death, inspire in us a deep horror of sin which makes the soul detestable to God and a slave of hell! O well-beloved of God, hear the ardent cry which rises up from every heart in this year dedicated to you. Bend tenderly over our aching wounds. Convert the wicked, dry the tears of the afflicted and oppressed, comfort the poor and humble, quench hatreds, sweeten harshness, safeguard the flower of purity in youth, protect the holy Church, make all men feel the attraction of Christian goodness. ln your name, resounding harmoniously in heaven, may they recognize that they are brothers, and that the nations are members of one family, upon which may there shine forth the sun of a universal and sincere peace. Receive. O Most Sweet Mother, our humble supplications and above all obtain for us that. one day, happy with you, we may repeat before your throne that hymn which today is sung on earth around your altars: You are all beautiful, O Mary! You are the glory, you are the joy, you are the honor of our people! Amen. C5 years indulgence? On the feast of the Immaculate Conception, December 8, 1953, Pope Pius XII proclaimed the first Marian Year, a year devoted especially to the Mother of God for the cause of world peace. Because peace is the strongest desire of youth, the seniors of St. Mel are fortunate in being able to graduate during a year dedicated to Mary, the one person who can make peace a reality. It identifies them with a cause and a belief that can save the World from the destiny that a god- less ideology is forcing upon it. This is the year of Mary. It is a year for the reaffirmation and the strengthening of a Catholic faith that remains the one, true answer to the problems of our day. 1 Page 18 746 Top: The senior class officers, seated L. to R., W. The Senior Council, composed of two representatives from each senior room and the senior class officers began functioning early in the school year under the guidance of Brother Iohn Michael, the moderator. Throughout the school year the council met weekly, sometimes more often if the situa- tions on hand warranted such action. These meetings, for the most part, were run without faculty supervision, and although the usual go :md humor that is part of most meetings of this type was quite often in evidence, it never interfered with the business at hand. The members of the council were sincerely interested in a better senior department and they acted accordingly. The council succeeded in promoting two ex :ellent dances: the senior dance, and the prom. They organized the senior attendance at the Alumni Banquet, and, in general, served their purpose throughout the year in a fashion worthy of the highest praise. Working from the single wing formation, the Melmen won their opening game but failed to click as well on offense as they did on defense. While Mike Motch was rated as tackle on the second team. Those ree ceiving honorable mention were tackles Herb Schwarz and Don Hora, and guard Bob Weyrich. Though these were the players particularly noted by their opponents as out- standing on the team, their efforts would not have been successful if they and the other regulars had not played as a unit. Hectic battles occurred as each room boasted of its great team. Varsity members were allowed to play, a fact which explains the caliber of the championship games. Iunior Department winners were Iunior 301 with Iunior 202 as runner-up. Senior 405 headed the Senior Department and just edged out Senior 403 in the final playoff game. These battles settled the question of the best room team in each department. Page 54 r carp .sgrafj . 'Hua 5 is Kiss qc .Q f5'M':f X s 14 . . .nr .rr , QM: Mfr QW'-'4 0521. 1 Giiffl 3 'sniff ' Wil? For example, the band has never missed a football game, rain or shine, snow or sleet: it is always there to encourage the team and student body to give their all for the school they represent. The Band played a prominent part in the triumphs of our basket- ball champions at St. George, Loyola, and the Chicago Stadium. Twice a year, under the competent and capable guidance ot Mr. Thomas Fabish and Mr. Ralph Meltzer the band performs at two major concerts, one at Christmas and one in the spring. There are also numerous other concerts which are presented throughout the city and suburbs. Page 58 nu,t fjle Sf. mel Ban Third Row: I. Mazienis, T. Murphy, F. Finkbeiner, T. Fleming, A. DeVine, L. Mr. Fabish, who is completing his eighteenth year at St. Mel, is a main factor in the great success of the band. Mr. Meltzer, who is assistant band director and a graduate of St. Mel, is a typical example of one of the hundreds of Knights who have become prominent well-known musicians. The men who have worked untiringly behind the scenes are the two Moderators of the band, Brother Pius and Brother Arnold. Everyday without fail they solve many troubles and problems for the sole benefit of the band and its members. Page 59 -an I ,ski Q 4 V Q, K Q L Q X A U I 0 f' R Aff I wx A 'L+ ' A Y . Based on a novel by Herman Melville, the play carried on the fine tradition of the St. Mel dramatic presentations of the past. Playing to a full house both nights, the production was acclaimed a tech- nical masterpiece. It was the most difficult play ever staged by the Meldramatic Club, involving three set changes, nine scenes, and the construction of a 1798 British war ship on the stage of the auditorium. Membership in the N.H.S. is the highest honor that can be paid to any high school student. It represents outstanding performance in the tields of scholarship, leadership, char- acter, religion, and school activities. No Melman can hope for a greater honor during his high school career than induction into this most distinguished ot all activities. The Debate Team boasts a group of fine, well trained orators. Throughout the past school year under the direction of Brothers Julius Herbert and Iohn Nicholas, the team has repre- sented St. Mel in admirable fashion in all the tournaments in which it participated. One of its members, Iohn Tibbs, won the championship of the city of Chicago in The Voice of Democracy contest, thus reflecting the entire caliber of this fine, well coached, team. Mme ew 6-Cook, or Sfudenf rM'ews The OBSERVEH took on a new look this year. A switch was made from the former tour-page monthly to a sixteen page quarterly news magazine. The student body at St. Mel seemed to take to the new style, and their remarks were very gratifying to the staff. The editor, Bob Cahill, had one purpose in mind: to make the OBSERVER as readable as possible. The staff and the editors spared no effort in Working toward the goal they had set. From the first day in September they judged every article that passed through their hands for readability and interest. They had an idea of what the average Melman Wanted to read and they acted accordingly. In the end, they achieved their goal, a magazine that the Melmen wanted to read. The group of 12, all seniors, worked hard and diligently to pro- duce what they hope is the finest yearbook ever to reflect the life of St. Mel. The success of any yearbook depends on the spirit and activity of the student body. It is not easy to try and put those two intangibles, spirit and activity into a book, which is only paper. The staff of the Knight is grateful, therefore, to every Melman, who, by his spirit and activity served as an inspiration to the twelve who worked on this book. They will feel that their efforts have been well worth while, if the actions and spirit recorded herein have been done Through Him, and With Him, and In Him. Page 67 . The crown of Queen Elizabeth Il was the theme of the Homecoming dance this year. Almost an exact, enlarged duplicate, the jewel-clustered crown was placed in the center of the palace and was the end point of the streamers that began from both ends of the balcony. After a hard fought game with Holy Trinity on Sunday, the more enjoyable and sociable ceremony, the dance, began the following Friday night. When the Grand March was sounded, Pat Boyle escorted the queen, Iulie Sylvester, to the throne while her court was introduced. With music provided by Dan Belloc and his orchestra, the queen started to dance as each Knight escorted his own queen. Though the palace was turned back to its original order when school began again, those who attended will always remember the royal Homecoming in the palace of the East Gym.
