Wlith the aid ol' his Church, his parents, his Catholic school and teachers, he starts early on the building process and perseveres until his goal is realized. During his high school years he begins to real- ize that each of the many-faceted days he spends is another step in the construction program. Cooper- ating wholeheartedly, therefore . . . ,Ale praya: Mans soul cries out in hunger for the Food of the Lord. 'l'he Lord hears him and answers and man is at peace. .ge o!,6llfLgA5! Man's face is transformed from the quietude olf repose to sparkling joy as his happiness is mirrored in his countenance. Maybe it's all ol' these, these little things that make a man a man. Yes, it is these little things that lorm the counterweight, and give balance to the strength and justice of strong Christian principles which are factors that make a man a man. The l952 KNIGHT is very happily dedicated to Mr. VVilliam P. Connolly, B.S.C., M.Ed., who in his twenty-five years at St. Mel has been instrumental in the molding of the character of literally hundreds of young men. This man, who we all know so well, has many gifts, which he gives to us daily and with which we are so familiar, that at times they pass by unnoticed. His wit is sparkling, his patience is long-enduring, his understanding is most comforting, and his aid is always close at hand. Mr. Connolly is a man who will long be remembered for he pos- sesses all of the qualities which make him truly a YVHOLE MAN. Page n I l l we mu. These words inscribed over the doors of ST. Mel's buildings tell us the basic materials that go into BUILDING THE WHOLE MAN. With these elements as its core, our school's varied curriculum offers oppor- tunities for all. Here The groundwork for attaining lofty goals is laid, The seeds of leadership in religion and secu- lar life are planted and nurtured, and The all-round pattern for successful liv- ing in Time and eternity is outlined. Proudly the school points to The re- cords of its past graduates, Their ac- complishments in all fields - religion, art, music, scholarship, athletics, and others. It is for us to show The world that our Training and education, based on The same essentials that have pro- duced so many great men from St. Mel High School, are productive of top qual- ity men today. To do so we must keep before our minds always the funda- mental principles we acquired in our high school days. s1 ,:: 7,17-P , ,f I It l 'fl'-YT 1 '1 Page 9 4--:' - -..-ff -5 -::1'-- 1 fffayq--,, .v .: .X N'1'if-fgyxwf . - 1 ,HJ '-I--'T 5 K s in X QM 12' fayiar I 1 -X ' E? As we, the Class of 1952, prepare to close the book of our high school life, we pause momentarily. Still feeling throughout our entire being the flush of achievement in many fields, we ask ourselves, What key factor was it that was all-important in our game of extra- curriculars? We ponder. For four years we have been part of a group. Together that group has planned and prayed, lived and worked, laughed and played. As mem- bers we have contributed our share. ln return we have profited from the bene- fits of group membership. What, we inquire, has happened to us as a result of our work together in the school's many-sided activities program? What has taken place as we sweated and worried over our diffi- culties or cheered and reioiced over our successes? We think we know the answer. in our cooperative efforts we have lent our- selves to others and have borrowed from them. In no small way has this inter- change helped to move us closer to the goal of high school and of later life - BUILDING THE WHOLE MAN. X xx ve iv, fe.. MX N iii. Oh yes, there was plenty ol atmosphere. The cafeteria, turned ciale, leatured a Purple and Gold color scheme. As a result, the training and the development of our minds comes in for maior atten- tion. However, the sound body, an ob- iective of any program engaged in BUILDING THE WHOLE MAN, has an im- portant place in the day's routine. The administration realizes the value of cooperation, good sportsmanship, and teamwork in the moulding of youth. We have often seen demonstrated that these qualities combine to give us winning teams and to inspire in us school spirit a factor as important to winning as the players themselves. The school has set up a well balanced schedule of interscholastic and intramu- ral sports in addition to the classes in physical education required for all fresh- men and sophomores. The heightening of interest in sports during the past several years, the ex- cellent coaching staff, and a revived school spirit united in 1952 to bring us the Basketball Co-Championship of the north section. This year's record stands as a challenge and an inspiration to the Melmen to come. l 1 ff 'M LS. The deleats were in points, not in spirit, as the team was out righting lor every inch ol ground in every game. In pre-season competition the Melmen bowed to lle La Salle, H-ti in a thrilling opener. At a benefit game in Soldier Field against VVeber, the school spirit mounted. The pillars ol' the stadium literally shook with shouting and cheering. The Red Horde took the tilt, lfl-0. Retaliating, the Melmen slaughtered Holy Trinity, 25-6. Another win came in the St. Patrick game as the Knights romped over the Shamrocks, tally- mg a 39-0 score. ln a grueling test of endurance, the Melmen lost to a menacing two-hundred-pound St. George line hy F59 points. In spite ol' being up lor the Homecoming Game, the team lost to the De Paul Demons, 20-O. Rated to lose hy at least 20 points to the Fenwick lfriars, St. Mel gridders came close to scoring the biggest upset in Catholic League competition. In a thrilling climax to a season ol' spirit, play, and excitement, the Knights lost the Hnal game hy 6 points. To these team notables the student body owes a round of applause: Mel Mazgaj, captain and most valuable player led his team with the motto 'ANever Say Die . Bill Praseh, most improved playerg and Lou Sehager, utilizing his low, hard tackles was rated best defensive player. This year's team is one that will 11011 soon be forgotten by the student body. Its members literally took it on the chin several times, they were knocked down, but had what it takes to make a team a champion. They picked themselves up oil the floor, shook orl the effects of a loss-never a defeatfand trotted out on the floor with only one thought in their collective minds: to win this game . As they came on to the floor, they were met with a roar that swept the entire gymnasium and swelled louder and louder reechoing in resounding choruses as the student body showed their faith by a heretofore unheard of display of spirit and team loyalty. Tvllfb will ever forget the Fenwick games, when we pushed the lfriars out of their own gym and packed in H500 roaring Melmen as the team won 46-42? and at home, with a restricted ticket sale, when hundreds had to be turned away while the team won 58-7127? lt has been a precedent-setting year. ln it mtttual coopera- tion between a great team and a spirited student body made champions of both. l'lt:'il'Rl'n ox f,l'l'USI rr l,Al-l- Top: Scattered shots from Fenwick Qinsetj and St. George games. tllirlrllrz' Imfl: The Iirst team, white, plays the second team, blue, in an afternoon practice scrimmage. lfiglll: Intramural tihampionship game. All of life lies before us in a pano- rama of color and sound so vivid that we hesitate a bit to take the first step. From behind us the Voice of the School thrusts us forward, saying: You are no longer the boy l once knew, the boy, who four years ago stood in awe as he first entered my doors and became a part of me . . . the boy who grew in knowledge and stature so swiftly in that year that he became a 'wise fool'! No longer are you the awkward lad of your first prom or the unsure man of early senior days. I have lived because of you and you have grown and prospered spirit- ually and materially in me. Step for- ward now with a sure tread to the waiting world. My portion of the task of BUILDING THE WHOLE MAN is accomplished. Godspeed! Page 85 HX , f rf Xxx lr ,we -fee l . ZX-r-U fix' ' ry K.. J4,w!52 WILCZM... It is with some tinge of regret that we close the cover on the book that tells the story of a year rich in spirit, accornplislnnent, and memories. VVe of the Knight express our sincere thanks to the Brothers and the lay faculty lfor their cooperation and understanding of the frequent interruptions of schedule. The office staff, too, has been ol' invaluable assistance by giving us access to files and records. X'Ve thank them. The year has swiftly drawn to a close. From the seed that has been planted in the Freshmen, sprouted with the Sophomores, taken root in the Juniors, and blossomed forth in the Manhood of the Seniors, emerges the hope of the world, the generation which must solve the momentous problems of our times. The next step in the growth of the man lies in the hands of the individual, for he now is the determining factor in 'AHUILDING THE YVHOLE MAN . RC7NAI.IJ NV.
