1 The ft. Kell llwgr. ?ranciA 14 Purcell b. If This year St. Mel parish's beloved pastor and St. Mel High Schools boun- teous benefactor, The Rt. Rev. Msgr. F. A. Purcell, D.D., will celebrate the Hfty-third anniversary of his ordination. He was elevated to the holy priesthood by Archbishop Feehan in Holy Name Cathedral, Iune 18, 1898. In 1905 after his return from Rome, where he had received his Doctorate in Divinity, he was named the first rector of Cathedral College, renamed Quigley Preparatory Seminary in 19241. Appointed Domestic Prelate in 1922, Monsignor Purcell continued to serve Quigley until he was assigned to the pastorate of St. Mel Church twenty years ago in 1931. Page 10

BSC.. is just completing his fourth year of presiding over the destinies ofthe Knights. Prior to his appointment in 1947, he served as director of St. Patricks Academy. Most of his years in the Religious life have been de- voted to the task of administering schools. Early in his career in the Brothers. he pioneered in organiz- ing and conducting the first Cath- olic high school band in Chicago. Brother Basil is assisted hy Brother L. Gerard in the Kildare Building and by Brother L. Iohn in the Madison St. Building.
