On that day the three hundredth anni- versary of the birth of St. lohn Baptist De La Salle, Founder of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. was commemorated. Solemn Pontifical Mass, sung by His Eminence Samuel Cardinal Stritch, was the local point of the day's observance. Commemorated also was the fiftieth anniversary of De La Salle's canonization and the first anniversary of the Procla- mation of His Holiness Pope Pius XII bestowing on St. lohn the title Mpatron Saint of All Teachers. Cathedral ceremonies included the reading of the Papal Decree by Father lohn Mrirphy, pastor of the lirst archdiocesan parish to be named in honor of De La Salle. Cardinal Stritch's sermon eulogized the Brothers Founder for his pioneer work in the Chris- tian education of the poor. Msgr. Purcell. St. Mel's pastor. served as assistant priest to the Cardinal. Speakers at the dinner that followed in the Mtiral Room ofthe Nlorrison Hotel included Brother Philip, FSC.. provincial of the St. Louis district. Father Richard Wolfe, pastor of St. Patricks church. Father Iohn Murphy and Dr. Edward A. Fitzpatrick. author of a well known biography of St. De La Salle.
