ASSUMING THE SEMBLANCE OF SNAIL-PACED PASSING, IT CLOAKS THE REALITY OF ITS FLEET-FOOTED FLIGHT. IN PROSPECT, IT DIS- PLAYS ITS MISLEADING DISGUISE: IN RETRO- SPECT, ITS TRUE NATURE. THE TIME OF HIGH-SCHOOL LIFE IS NO DIFFERENT. ACTUALLY, WE CAN NEVER RE- LIVE THE SLOW-MOVING DAYS OF THE YEAR THAT HAS GONE SO RAPIDLY. VICARIOUSLY THOUGH, WE CAN. IN PICTURE AND WORD THE FAST-MOVING, EVENT-FILLED YEAR OF 1950-51 AT ST. MEL HAS BEEN PRESERVED IN THIS BOOK. BECAUSE THEY FEEL THAT NOW, AND OFTEN IN THE YEARS AHEAD, ITS CON- TENTS WILL BRING IT ALL COMES BACK TO THE LIPS OF PRESENT-DAY MELMEN, THE EDI- TORS HAVE ADOPTED THESE WORDS AS THE THEME OF THIS, THE SECOND VOLUME OF THE KNIGHT. Mel High School in Chicago, YllinoiA Pr-went 7he I9 I Knight It 1411 C'omeA Kuala' Inseparable from the memories that well up in our minds when we reminisce about the year are the scenes about the school build- ings--the beautiful marble entrance stairs of both buildings, the spacious, well-kept halls, and the inspirational Shrines of Our Lady of Fatima. Gur daily stand at the bulletin board, exciting contests in the gymnasium, the happy, carefree hours in the lunchroom- all crowd into the picture. In all of these scenes which we re-live in fancy we realize that it is the people in them that color them-the faculty members, the friends. classmates, and team associates. So it is that both persons and places are with us once more when lt All Comes Back . xi xixx wgw mx iii x Y i :ENS ,Q S' if ' S xi Q ms f SNS A A 1 S. On that day the three hundredth anni- versary of the birth of St. lohn Baptist De La Salle, Founder of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. was commemorated. Solemn Pontifical Mass, sung by His Eminence Samuel Cardinal Stritch, was the local point of the day's observance. Commemorated also was the fiftieth anniversary of De La Salle's canonization and the first anniversary of the Procla- mation of His Holiness Pope Pius XII bestowing on St. lohn the title Mpatron Saint of All Teachers. Cathedral ceremonies included the reading of the Papal Decree by Father lohn Mrirphy, pastor of the lirst archdiocesan parish to be named in honor of De La Salle. Now, with graduation at hand, there slowly dawns on each Senior the real significance of Commencement. With it the curtain descends on the carefree play of happy years and rises almost at once on the serious drama of adult life. The departing Knight, however, like graduates the world-over. takes little time now for deep thought and reminiscence. The excite- ment and happiness of the occasion carry him away. It will be in the future, his elders remind him, that he will fully acquire a realization of what his high school life has meant to him. Then only will he completely appreciate his education with its stress on Religion, Mores, Cultura. graduate . . . .2 ,. . Present at the gala affair were 225 Knights and their ladies. Music was furnished by Bill Rohter and his orchestra. Plans for the event were prepared by the Senior Council. Members of the Ladies Auxiliary and of the Fathers and Friends Club served as chaperons. Feature of the evening was the grand march in which everyone participated. Directed by Mr. Iohn Wilson, assisted by members of the Fathers Club, it was climaxed by the singing of the school's songs. Offered as souvenirs of the prom were programs of purple and gold with an embossed Knights head design cut out in the center of the plastic cover. In addition to the gymnasium classes, which are a part of the freshman and sophomore curriculum at St. Mel, a complete schedule of interscho- lastic and intramural sports events takes care of the physical man. Football, basketball, track, swimming, golf, and tennis-all play their part in developing for Knights muscular strength, agility, and coordination as well as a sense of fair play. Thiclrn, manager The St. Mel Varsity Gridders finished the 1950 season with four victories and one tie. Two of these triumphs as well as the tie came in conference play: the other two were won in practice games. Although handicapped by a comparatively light line, the Knights showed a team spirit that was seldom matched. Coach Dee and Assistant Coach Stelmaszek held daily practice sessions in Garfield Park. Under their guidance the squad learned the meaning ot hard work and discipline. Outstanding for their performances were Tom Bettis and Ron Mayor in the backfield and Ed Guare and Pete Mirabella in the line. These four boys also represented St. Mel in the annual High School All-Star Game held at Soldier Field. Ron Mayor. the Knights passing quarterback pictured twice below, was named to the All-State squad. Receiving awards for exceptional performances during the 1950 season were Tom Bettis-most valuable player: Bob Bergmann--best defensive player and Bill Travnick-most improved player. r St. Mel 27 St. Elizabeth ll bt. Page 79 It 1411 Com e4 Extra-curricular life at Knight headquarters teems with activities. Designed to bring into play every aptitude and potentiality possessed by Melmen, these out-of-school pursuits fall into various categories. Since those of an athletic type are treated in a section of their own, only the others will be considered here. Putting into more intensive and extensive practice the principles learned in Religion classes are the members of the Archconfraternity of the Divine Child, the Benildus Club, and the Chaplains Corps. In the field of Speech, the Debating Club and the Meldramatic Club are cen- ters of attraction. Musical interests are met by the Band and the Glee Club. An opportunity to assist in school management problems is pro- vided by the Traflic and Service Clubs. The Observer and The Knight offer outlets for writers and photographers. In these publications too, as well as in the many-sided interests of the Art Club, the budding artist finds his talents employed. These major organizations and a variety of smaller ones make profitable the after-school time of hundreds of Knights. Nctivitie . . . Zack CHAIJTEH FUUH Mlm ffl HH .1..- Un The Kandwayon One of the most important activities which is sponsored by the school is the St. Mel Band. Not only were they present as a whole at every football game but from their number formed a small group called the Pep Band. It was the duty of this part of the band to attend all home basketball battles. This year, under the guidance of Mr. Thomas Fabish. the Knights held two concerts-a Christmas Concert and a Spring Concert. Both of these were pre- sented in Resurrection auditorium. Une ofthe featured attractions of the latter was the magnificent playing of Beethoven's Opus 73 by Ronald Koraiczyk. Mr. Fabish later revealed that Korajczyk did all the transcribing from the orchestral arrangement to that of the band. Mr. Fabish is assisted by Nlr. Herman Wiegman and Nlr. Ralph lVlelt:er. lVlr. Fabish is in his lifteenth year as St. Mel's conductor while Nlr. Wiegmaii has been associate conductor since the Drum and Bugle Corps days. Brother Alfred acted as moderator and scheduled various performances at Resurrection. Trinity, and St. Malachy. Page 82 Kane! Pei-Aonnel Top Spread: FLUTEgR. Cmnlmru and I. Spicuzzu CLARINETAA. Auxiliary Drive Winners Visit St. Louis One of the main events in student life each year at St. Mel is the St. De La Salle Auxiliary Drive. Conducted for the benefit of the Christian Brothers' Houses of Study at Glencoe, Mo., the annual Campaign stirs up considerable inter-class and inter-departmental rivalry. Those who attain top places are awarded a four-day trip. This year the winning Knights journeyed to St. Louis. where they made the Melbourne Hotel their headquarters, May 3-6. ln addition to spending some time at Glencoe. where the Brothers' Iuniorate is situated, the travellers visited Christian Brothers College in St. Louis. Through the many years since 1923, when the journalistic pioneers of those days turned out the first issue of The Magnavox, St. Mel has provided its students with an attractive and informative newspaper. Since 1936 the school publication has been called The Observer. Filling the post of moderator made vacant by the transfer of Brother Gerardus, Brother Patrick in his initial year has succeeded in molding an adequate staff. Great credit is due to staff members who have persevered in the arduous task of presenting a suitable publication in the tradition of St. Mel. Guiding the unclerclassmen, new to the staff, the more experienced student journalists have managed to bring to the student body recent information, interesting art work and photography. and commendable writing in the pages of The Observer. Father Iohn Brown, '22, Chosen Alumnus of the Year Alumni of St. Mel played hosts to and honored the Silver Anniversary Class of '26, with its many achievements, on lanuary 31, at their thirtieth annual banquet. Terrace Room of the Hotel Morrison was the scene of the event. To present-day Melmen as well as to those who have been graduated over the past twenty years the best known member of the honored class is Mr. Frank Ruane, who manages the schools business oflice. Father Iohn Brown, '22, who has given many inspiring retreats to the students of his Alma Mater, was chosen as i'Alumnus of the Year and pre- sented with a scroll symbolizing the honor. Main factor in earning the award for Father Brown is his exceptionally successful work as pastor of St. Mal- achy's Church. Guest speaker of the evening was the Reverend Leopold Braun. A.A., who for many years served as pastor of the last Catholic Church in Nloscow. His gripping talk on Communism was a highlight of the evening, Added to the long list of old grads present for the banquet were the soon- to-be members of the Alumni Association - the Class of '5l.
