r K r ' ji: HB We are travelers in search of knowledge that will aid us in fulfulling our ultimate goals. Through the beauty of a sunset, the iove of friends, the light of G candle, God ' s presence unites and surrounds us. It makes groups of people different. It gives them a reason to be proud It comes in many forms and it is what makes the world go round. Culture: the distinction of a race. V . •: I ,M MEMORY Of BARTRAV JULY la I9« Nothing Like Spirit Week To Get Tlie Year Going. Spirit Week brings the school together in an atmosphere of healthy competition and fun. The week got off to a good start and reached a peak on Wednesday: Dress-Up Day, This event brought out all the weirdos of the school and the majority of the students participated. The Big-Little Sister Luncheon took place on Thursday of Spirit Week (as is tradition). The Junior class of 85 entered the ranks of upper doss women as they became big sisters to the Freshman class of 87 . The Seniors and their little sisters, the Sophomores, had a great time having lunch together. ' 1 Gloria Ramirez says, Indecency? What ' s thaf I 2, Juniors brought a toga atmosphere to their little sisters ' party, All we need is Julius Caesar , 3, I surely can go for some of them apples down yonder , exclaims Norma, Mwe twoo, says Monica. 4. Maria Ramos observes Clotilde Serrano groom her ea rs purr-fectiy for the day. 5. Are Mrs. Kiser and Elena Viero about to feast on delicious watermelons? Actually, they ' re for the students ' eating contest, 6. Las Chicas Menudo show their appreciation for their idols. 7. Room 104 was one of the rooms the Seniors invaded to give their little sisters a good lunch. 8. The Most Spirited cake, baked by Jackie Morejon. was won by Dolores Fonseca. It ' s mine, it ' s all mine, Spirit Day Spent In A New Surrounding - Jhe School Perhaps the biggest change of the traditional Spirit Week was Spirit Day at the Park which turned out to be at schooi due to rainy weather. Though the setting changed, the winners of the Spirit Stick did not. The Class of 1985 won the Spirit Stick for the third consecutive year. Even though Spirit Week seems to bring out the spirit of competition between various classes, everyone wins as a result of the unity and sisterly love that exists and that the school is noted for. 1 Many faces, many expressions but one message - class spirit!. 2, Lily, Grisel, Rita, and Lourdes lead their class in an uplifting chieer. 3. Sweet Juniors, they are these, 4, Gabby and Viola proudly display their favorite rockers on their arms, painted by Bertha Rangel. Tatoos were created by the Drama Club. 5. The few, the loud, the cheerleaders. 6. Goofy, portrayed by Diana Bueno, felt right at home with his Junior friends as he made their day more cheerful. 7. Lovable Garfield, played by Martha Garibalde, takes time out before his nap to answer Elena Viera ' s questions about his personal life. 8. Kristi Martin moves her stuff to the up-beat sounds of Michael Jackson as her friends observe. s sit Sleep? What Sleep? Who says people actually sleep during a slumber party? No one could go to sleep the night of the slumber party, sponsored by the Student Council, with all the things that were going on. Such things as story telling and movie watching were going on. The students also participated in games such as charades, baby bottle feeding contest and bobbing for apples. But the two things that went on all through the slumber party were: one, shaving cream fights and two, excessive eating. What seemed like tons of pizza and gallons of soda were gobbled up by the students. How many people actually slept? It is rumored that only about 10 students out of 62 that attended actually slept. The truth will only be known in the Slumber Zone . 1 Ahh come on, it ' s just a picture. 2. Pat Duarte and Caroiino Roncheta steadiiy watcti Young Frankenstein. 3. Anybody for the munchies?! ' - Halloween Dress-Up Day A typical scene this year at the annual Halloween Dress-Up Day was seeing students dressed as their favorite ghoul or goblin. Some other students took the opportunity just to dress up. They dressed up in styles ranging from cowboys to hobos. After all is said and done, Halloween 1983 will probably best be remembered as the Dawn of the Weird . 1, Here comes Nancy Cottontail, hopping down the Bunny Trail 2 On Dress-Up Day. rejects from the funny farm showed up 3 The Wicked Witch of the West showed up for school 1 A circus isn ' t complete without helium balloons. 2. in the hopes of winning, Anna Rodriguez buys most of her own raffle ticl ets. 3. This is what you get when you cross Ronald McDonald and Elton John. Fundraisers Part of what keeps the school and its organizations going are fundraisers, such as the sale of chocolate bars, ad space for our yearbook, and various dances and bake sales throughout the scholastic year Without these fundrdisers many things in school would be much more expensive The Laureate Drive this year took us to the circus Again each class was represented by a character, Lion (seniors) Juggler (juniors) Clown (soph- omores), and Monkey (freshman). The Lion showed its domination over the St, Matthias circus, since the Seniors came in first in the drive. Without these fundraisers, life in this school would be a Jungle ' WM J- J 1. Kathy Vela, Rosa Garcia and Lizeth Delgado add the finishing touches to their Kris Kin presents. Togetherness The Senior Retreat was an ex peri- ence which had various meanings for all those who participated. For some it was a strengthening of their relationship with God, For others it was a representation of this relationship Moreover encounters did not stop here: for many girls it was a renewal of old friendships, as well as the meetings of new friends However, this renewal and strengthening of relationships was not all that went on during these three days During free time, the girls had the chance to enjoy the beautiful scenery which was one of the many pleasant surprises that were offered to them. In addition to group activities, the Seniors had a chance for solitude. It was the final activity which was for the majority the most memor- able. Everyone was given the opportun- ities to trade Kns Km presents and express their feelings on the retreat. Many beautiful things were said, but it was what Margaret Keel said that touched everyone, Make new fnends but keep the old, for one is silver and the other ' s Goldi Tis The Season . On the night of December 14, 1983, people coming to the annuo! Christmas Concert were in for a surprise. The director of the groups performing that night was no longer Mrs. Nancy Coonis, but Miss. Fran Johnston. The change wasn ' t radical, but it didn ' t go unnoticed either. Though the usual attack of nerves occurred before the concert, the girls went on the stage and gave their best. The performance went well, and once again, the Christmas Concert was a success. 1 Canticum Novum carefully watches Ms. Johnston ' s hand signals to lead them through singing notes. 2, Handbells get ready to perform one of the many beautiful songs they ' ve learned. A Christmas Odyssey The 1983 Christmas Program wos based on a futuristic Christmas that showed us a mechanical Santa Claus that could instantly produce gifts at the push of a button. The futuristic Christmas lacked true significance The authentic Christmas story was recited by one of the characters in the skit and the Nativity scene was re-enacted by Maria Ledesma Mary , Rosa Arnaga Jo- seph , and Mr Trent Marshall Jr. (son of Mrs, Mills) as the baby Jesus. This brought back the true significance of Christmas the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ 1 Santa drops in to pass out condy cones to all the good little girls, witti ttie help of his elf Elena Viera 2 The Student Council acts out the nativity scene for the student body Fantasticks ! For the first time m ihe history of both the schools, St Matthias and Saiesian High Schools come together to render their performance of a play The play that was chosen was The Fantasticks The cast was composed of veterans as well as novices to the stage Kathy Vela, Kathy Porter, Eddie Rodriguez, and Angel Romero have all had previous experience and truly gave their all as actors and actresses to enhance the play. Madonna Hall, Martin Gomez, Francisco Sanchez and Jaime Zarate, although not having hod any former stage experience, performed like veterans With the co-operative directional skills of our Ms. Store and Mr. Barry from Saiesian The Fantasticks turned out to be just that: Fantastic! i 1 Soon I s gonna ram one of the songs song by LOuisa and Matt 2 Madona and Jaime discuss plans to Kidnao Louisa with the help of El Galio 3 The pioy is taken very seriously, here we see what happened to M Gomez when he missed his cue d Louisa listens os Matt and his father talk atxjut her 5 The directors look over one of the final rehearsals 6 Madona and Jaime ' s characters fmd out thot it ' s easier to ' plant radishes than raise chikjren Adios Birdie Play practices for the spring play are helping young actors prepare for the school production of Bye-Bye Birdie. This year, the promising actresses fronn this school got the chance to work with actors imported from Salesian High School. This is the second time that St Matthias and Salesian have collaborated to put on a theatrical production The first time that talents were combined was for the show, The Fantas- tics The response was positive, and so, the relationship was exercised again Mrs Store, director, plays a very important role in making sure that the final product is a good one Kathy Vela, the female lead, says about the practices, If you enjoy acting and doing plays, you don ' t mind the long hours. 1 In Lots of Living , Olgo De Lo Torre finds the love of her life 2 The choreography of Lots of Living in Its raw phase 3 Experienced women of the stage. Thie first game was between the Freshmen and the Sophomore class. Though inexperienced, both teams poured all their effort and enthusiasm into this crucial game. The Seniors tackled the Juniors on the second day, hoping to be in the Semi-Finals . Finally the day arrived when the Seniors confronted the Sopho- mores in the Semi-Final game. The tension mounted, the crowds were there, each cheering for their favorite class. They battled it out all during lunch, and when the last bell rang the Sophomores emerged victorious. 1. Several of the Juniors try ttieir luck at hitting the ball with speed and accuracy. 2. Juniors show their class spirit by participating in a challenging game of volleyball. 3. II The Beat Goes On On a given Saturday night, you can hear electrifying music coming out of the auditorium. That ' s right folks, it ' s another dance! Things have changed a little, namely students from public schools have to have a guest pass, but the action is still hot! There are all sorts of things happening at the dances, and whether it be dancing to one of the latest hits, or checking out the latest fads , you ' re guaranteed a fun evening. People coming to the dances bring nevj dance steps, fashion, make-up and hair styles. It ' s an exciting evening, v hich goes to show , . . the beat goes on. 1 Party animals ore always to be found at our dances, 2. Spike It! r , Spike, hit, serve, and call your own balls are sonne of the common words used in volleyball The sport of alertness and skill was successfully displayed by the Victorian team. They had their share of victories, four games out of ten. Mr, Hansen and Mr. Gonzalez took turns this season stepping in as coach Home games were at Salt Lake Park ' s Recreation Center where part of the action took place it was a pretty good season overall, says Norma Nava Slam-Dunk! Basketball is a competitive sport that involves agility, concentration and loyalty. Agility IS a basic necessity for almost every sport, but basketball requires players that are fast and tall at the same time This combination is hard to find, but v ith players like Monica Navarro, the team this year seemed to have everything under control. Concentration is also very important when playing the sport of Basketball The players must concentrate on the different plays involved in one game For this reason, basketball players sometimes psyche themselves out in order to focus their attention on only one thing. Basketball. Communication between players is also very important in the sport. Without communication, a team does not function because the players do not know what the others are planning Finally, loyalty to the sport and your teammates is crucial. This aspect is very important to the success of any particular basketball team because if a player does not feel any loyalty toward her team, she will not put forth any effort to make the team a success Many things are involved m having a good basketball team, most of which come from the strong characters of the players 1 Martie Rodriguez takes a breather during a basketball halftime 2 Determined coacfiing. given here by Coach Frank, is essential to a winning team 3 Basketball Team l-R (Back row) M Aicaio. For the first time, all the classes did not have their retreat at the same time. It was also the first time the Junior Class was able to go off for a weekend retreat and the Freshmen did not stay in school Days of Recollection are very much a part of our school life. They help us unite and grow closer to one another. 1 Are you sure this Is the way it goes? asks Diana Parades Sophomores reminisce about what happened on the wueat while riding home 3 Evelyn smiles as she proudly .MOWS what will soon be her offering at the Moss 4 Making your own offerings takes a lot of time ana concentration, as shown by these Sophomores 5 Connie De Anda and Mercy Pianos find something to smile about 6 Amber Valladoiid What do you think of my drawing o( an invisible castle? 7 Spending time alone with your feelings was a major part of the Sophomore Retreat Liturgies Jesus Christ said, Whenever two or three are gathered in my name, there I am amidst them. When people unite in Jesus name, the celebration of the last Supper is transformed into the holiest celebration, known as Mass. This celebration has a deep significance to everyone and especially to the student body of St. Matthias. For Campus Ministry, Mass meant the preparation of themes and readings and performing a variety of songs. Their music enriched and added a unique ingredient that made the Mass a lively experience. The union through peace and love was the essence of the Mass that meant so much to the student body and that made them a stronger force throughout the year. This everlasting Catholic ceremony supplied them with a few moments ' peace and a few words of wisdom, that would pave the road to a better understanding of the Catholic tradition. 1 . At a recent Mass, the student body was treated to the delighttui sounds of the handbell choir. 2. Carmen Espindola participates in the cherished tradition of holding hands while reciting the Our Father. 3. Reading the Scripture during Mass requires courage and confidence, and Rosa Garcia exhibits both qualities gallantly. 4. Many special moments occur during a Mass, and Gladys Naranjo and Sister Mary Lynn ore part of just one. 5. If it weren ' t for the singing, the girls at Mass would find the ceremony long and lifeless. 6. Virginia Moreno needs a moment of personal prayer to make her Moss experience whole. 7. Pilar Aguero derives personal tranquility from leading the Seniors in the liturgy. - i ' l ,- ■ Throughout the years, Student Council has been an essential element of St. Matthias High School because it has played an important role in keeping the school alive and united, Both past and present members have enjoyed dedicating their time and skill in preparing many social functions. This year ' s activities included: a baseball trip to Dodger Stadium, Spirit Week, a slumber party, a food eating contest and a celebration commemorating the school ' s fiftieth anniversary. The members have put all their energy into making this event a unique experience. As Maria Ledesma, president of the Student Council, declared, Every Student Council member cooperates and they are very enthusiastic about planning upcoming activities. So, as one can see, the Student Council aims to integrate their classmates in a diversity of enjoyable functions. Once a month, for thirty minutes, they lead other members in planning activities for the future. Their activities included dances, outings with other schools, and a possible bike-a-thon. Veronica Ruiz, Toni Garner, Jovito Martinez, Elvia Munoz, Carolina Ronchetta, Roxanne Herrero. The Pep Squad may well be said to be an offshoot of the cheerleaders because it is in joining this club that members acquire the experience necessary to become a cheerleader. The club, having a total of twelve girls, was led by Susan Martinez, who tried her best to counsel and guide the group. The members, along with the cheer- leaders, cheered and danced to several routines at many of the games, hoping to motivate the team to victory. Toni Garner, a member, enthuses, You really have to be a spirited person, because that is what it ' s all about! Creating Spirit Z -: The cheerleading squad, composed of four members, is the smallest group in the school that stresses spirit and participation. It is not easy to make the squad because it requires much time and dedication, but for many it is an enjoyable experience. It may be a small group, but as captain, Susan Martinez says, It is easier and less complicated to organize a routine with a smaller number, The cheerleaders ' mam goal was to represent the school spirit and unity at many of the games and pep rallies They tried to do this by organizing vibrant routines that captivated the spectator ' s attention All in all the group isn ' t as tiny as it seems, because it sure has a lot to say about itself. 1 Members of GAA and Pep Squad gather around tor a brief meeting 2 Several Pep Squad members transmit spirit at many of the games 3 Everyone feels the heat and beat of the cheer- leaders 4 A view from the Good Year Biimp of the school s campus 5 Carmen Garcia leads a cheer at a home gome Scholarship Through Service i O © © G © I 9li Uli ili e ii. Open to sophomores, juniors and seniors, the club requires that its members maintain a 3.4 grade point average. Once in the club a girl devotes a part of her time to tutoring students with problems in academic subjects such as mathematics, languages, social studies and science, truly following the club motto Scholarship through Service. Among other club activities is the annual field trip on a school day which could range from a campus tour of a nearby college to a trip to the Griffith Park Observatory. Although the field trip does provide some means of education, it also provides a dedi cated C.S.F. member with a pleasant break from academic pressures associated with school, as any member knows. This club is just one of the many rewards a student can achieve if she applies herself and proves to be responsible. From top left L Llamas. Y Molina. J Hernandez. M Alcaic. C Campos. L. de Quesada. In this school there are organizations to appeal to the varied interests of our student body, but there is one w hich calls on girls to help other people throughout the world: The Mission Club. The Mission Club ' s main function is to raise money for the missions at home and around the world. With about fifty members, the Mission Club sponsors many different activities such as bake sales, Jean Day and the annual dance. The Mission Club also helps people in our community by having annual food drives on special holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas. This food goes to local families and surrounding communities who benefit greatly from this aid. They do this by having bake sales and talent shows. Enrichment Campus Ministry was formed two years ago to supplement and expand the girls ' religious education Though the development of the department has progressed slowly, it achieved its main goal, which is to enrich each and every girl spiritually as well as mentally In this effort the department, under the direction of Ms, Gabriel and Ms Butorac, designed and successfully completed a diversity of interesting activities throughout the past year. The traditional class retreats were earned on with their usual spark of animation, but with a couple of changes. Instead of the customary one day retreat, the Juniors were allowed to enjoy an entire weekend in Big Bear and both the Freshmen and the Sophomores were granted an off-campus retreat. Among the most exciting and highly speculative presentations that were sponsored by Campus Ministry was Disarmament Week, which took place in October. This program was presented by Sr, Regina and Sr. Stellomarie from the Catholic Peace Coalition, it examined the topic of nuclear war through informative films and discussions. The event was an influential experience that enhanced the student body and delivered a clearer perspective on the nuclear weapons issue. Not only did this year imbue each student with a broad range of knowledge, but it reinforced her religious foundation. 1 Sister Mary Lynn neips r jtrief iuny distribute Holy Communion 2 Our patron saint - St Matthias 3 Playing tianabells con be a teacher-student activity 4 During the Our Father, the congregation 15 one 5 Evelia Torres receives her Lenten ashes from Father Gorman 6 On the first Campus Ministry retreat of this year, in November. This year, the LAUREATE staff and moderator, Ms. Gabriel, redefined dedication, creativity and insanity in many ways. One way was spending many hours on perfecting that final product — the yearbook in all its glory. Those countless hours were filled with imagination and a few jars of Midnight Oil that were definitely used well under the pressure of meeting deadlines. Room 104 was the Cellar Full of Noise. It was here where, in the commotion and hard work, ideas were developed, problems were solved, and a masterpiece was in the making. However, among the sweat and tears, there were moments of euphoria. Be it with meeting a deadline or receiving a compliment, a smile was always able to be obtained from the staff. Through the ups and downs, disappoint- ments and glory, the staff continually managed to maintain a sense of unity and accomplishment. 1 Section Editors Sagrario Orihuela and Mina Aguilar, identify pictures for their sections. 2, Designing the division pages takes a lot of patience and dedication from Maria Ledesma 3. In Senior year, a girl has many options to choose from concerning herself and God, each a semester long. Christian Service, an off-campus, voluntary service class, is one of the choices, In this class, the student is challenged to be responsible and helpful to the Christiar community by tutoring at nearby Catholic schools, and aiding hospitals. Some decisions that faced the Class of ' 85 were picking little sisters, class colors, class rings, and Senior sweaters. These were all important facets of becoming upperclasswomen. Academic stability was also important, and to get this started. Juniors took the P. S. A. T. test. This is Just one of the many obstacles that had to be overcome, especially if college is in the future. As Isabel Carram put it, Junior year is the hardest so far. It can ' t be said that there was nothing fun about Junior year. There were the dances and the Junior-Senior Prom to look forward to.
