JMY 59 Jacket Season Success This year's football team suffered only 2 losses. Players Leland Noble (24), Tim Mitchell (20), Tommy Martin (71), 4 year veterans, and John Fuller (31), a 3 year veteran, were asked to share their thoughts of the '74 football season. When asked how they felt before a game. Fuller said, Scared uh-uh, scared all the time, tense before every game, and Tim commented, Yeah, I say you could call it nervous; it is sort of a tense feeling. Always is what Leland had to say when asked if he ever thought of being permanently injured. Tim exclaimed, That stays in my mind; that makes a good game. When you're scared, you run faster. The game against Bamberg (one of the two lost) was both Martin's and Leland's toughest game. The other, St. George, surprised Fuller and Martin. To prepare psychologically for a game, Leland said, I pray, and Tim commented, I 'psych' out all bad thoughts, all things that could happen to injure me. When asked why they stuck to playing football so long, Martin commented, I like the sport, and Fuller exclaimed, I like it, it's exciting, the game's exciting. 60 Leapfrog? No, it's only warmups before the game. Coach Culclasure, with his ever present wad of tobacco, psychs the team up before the yame. Leland Noble ( 24) turns the corner as Randy Spigner ( 50) blocks during the Hunter-Kinard game. Left: Referee and players await to see what will become of Jerome Romy Anderson's recently shot ball. Below: Time out for a rest and some Saintly Jacket advice. 68 This year the SMHS Yellow Jackets have had their best season in years. Three members of the basketball team were asked to give their views on basketball. When asked what constitutes a good game, Sylvester Anderson made this reply: A combination of everything, scoring, rebounding, and defense. It's when you know you're contributing something to the whole team. Having been asked to describe his best game, Tim Mitchell came up with this: I played my best in the game against Hunter-Kinard. I played a superb offensive game and shot 100% from the floor, (but then I only shot twice). Renaldo Lawrence's comments on who is essential to a good team were these: Good players and a good coach are essential. Mainly because a team can have the drive to go all the way to the top, but without the guidance of a good coach a team can be in deep trouble. But, coaches need the will power and physical endurance of strong players to carry on in order to win a game. From Coach Culclasure came this statement: We dress 12 players. That's less than in the past, but all 12 can help us. We play everybody and everybody does a good job. Romy Anderson ( 32) is confident he can make the basket as fellow teammates ready themselves just in case he doesn't. Renaldo Boo Lawrence proves his ability at the free throw line as he scores against Bamberg in the first home game of the season. 69 o The Way It Was Cheerleaders cheer girls' team on as Co-Captains Brenda Scott (20) and Bette Paulling (32) lead team to victory one against Bamberg. Two points! Technical! Foul! Jump Ball! Three seconds left on the clock; St. Matthews Girls behind one point, and they have possession of ball. Shot's off, it's good, and time runs out. Another game won for the team. Success has been the key word to the girls' team in the last year. In an exclusive interview with Coach Dayson, he was asked to tell the strong points of the team ‘ this year. He made these comments: This year our team has put emphasis on defense and has done very well under the basket. Judy Thompson, our top rebounds er, has had 13 rebounds with only half the season over. Referring to difference in competition from last year, Dayson had these comments: Competition this year has leveled out with last year's. Edisto High is the toughest competition; but we're ready to play them with high hopes.' To the ecstasy of St. Matthews Girls, Edisto was defeated by one point. On the scoring end Coach Dayson commented, Our average per game is 45 points with Bette Paulling as our top scorer, averaging 17 points per game. Future outlook was described as tliis: I have high hopes of getting into the final tournaments. Not only getting in, but winning!! ! exclaimed the Coach. i Another interview was with one of the all time bench warmers, Debra Brown, known by the team as Chicken. She was asked her feelings while on the bench during a game. I have been on the team for four years, and I really enjoy basketball. When 70 asked why I stick with it, my only answer would be for the love of basketball. I wonder to myself during a game, 'Now what would I do in that situation?' But usually the play is different, and that is why I'M a bench warmer instead of a star. When asked whether it was frustrating to practice the long hours and not get to play but five or ten minutes, Chicken's answer was.- No, not really, because I feel if the first string can do a better job of doing and playing the patterns better than I, why not let them play and win us the fame of victory!. One of the co-captains, Bette Pauliing, was asked how she felt about this year's basketball. Her answer was, This year's basketball is completely different from last year's. This year we have a good second and third string; therefore, the first string doesn't have to play as much. Bette was asked about her feelings before a game and what is said in the locker room. Her comments were these: I am very nervous before a game. I have to force myself to eat. Everyone on the team stays nervous until we know we have the game in the bag . . .All that is said in the locker room is, 'Hurry! OH-h-h-h my stomach! Where is my shoe! ??!' On the topic of team spirit Bette had these comments. Our school's spirit is very important to a game. We play harder to impress the crowd. More and more fans are coming to games. I hope as the season progresses, many more will join in the sport of basketball games!!! Girls listen whole heartedly as Coach Dayson advises them of what is yet to come. Bette Paulling (37) anticipates tip from Carolyn Bonaparte (43) at beginning of Bamberg game. In the spring a young man's—or a young woman's—fancies turn to . . . sports? Well, maybe not. But outdoor sports are kind of exciting after a long winter of hibernation. How good were the SMHS's teams? How well did the members of the senior class do in the final season of high school sports? What were the biggest games, meets, and matches? The most satisfying victory?
