THAD OTT COACH . . . FRIEND . . . Mr. Ott is pictured with his wife, Doris, son, Mike, and daughter, Nancy. Mr. H. Thad Ott was elected Superintendent of St. Matthews Public Schools effective July 1, 1972. His elec- tion to this position climaxes a long career of dedication and success at SMHS. Serving as our Principal since 1965, Mr. Ott is well known to students and teachers alike. Before assuming his principalship duties in 1965, Mr. Ott was a long-time teacher and coach at SMHS. His teams have recorded many wins and championships, including one state championship. OUTSTANDING TEENAGERS OF AMERICA Gene Locklair, Fred Culcleasure, and Mark Line were selected by the principal as students who have demonstrated leadership ability, unusual talents, excellent academic achievement, and community service. Not pictured-Zambalist Frederick. The St. Matthews High School Band, directed by Mr. Kenneth Creekmore, has been very active this year. The band participated in the South Carolina State Marching Band Contest this year and made a good showing. They also participated in the West Columbia-Cayce Christmas Parade and the Bowman Christmas Parade. Our band played at our football games. They really helped to lead our boys on to victory. The band performed a Christmas concert for the student body on December 18. On Sunday, December 17, the band held a Christmas Concert for the public in the high school gym. Mr. Creekmore put together a number of Christmas songs. The band gave a wonderful performance. Our band will also attend the Santee Band Conference to be held at Hunter-Kinard High School. Several local bands will participate in it. Our Stage Band will participate in the Carolina Jazz Festival featuring Stan Kenton Jazz Band In Residence” concert and clinics at the University of South Carolina. Our band has been an added attraction to our school for many years and will be for many years to come. Tomlinson, was awarded the Betty Crocker Homemaker Award, presented by General Mills to the high school senior girl who scores highest on written knowledge and aptitude examinations. Sara was also selected as the recipient of the Daughters of the American Revolution Award for demonstrating character, leadership, and de- pendability in school and community life.
