By various means of raising money, the Betas were able to pay their way to the State Beta Club Convention. It was held at the Jefferson Hotel in Columbia on Feb- ruary 26-27. Peter Savitz was a candidate for State Beta Club President. Although he did not win, campaigning was a rewarding experience and a lot of fun for everyone. The staff is made up of students from all the high school classes. The editor is chosen from the Senior Class by the advisor. The other officers are chosen by the editor and the advisor together with help from the principal. Past achievements and work rec- ords are the basis for these selections. Each year the staff sponsors some event to raise funds for the printing of the paper. However, the selling of advertise- ments to businesses furnishes the main source of money. This is done by members of the staff during the summer. Mrs. Morris, Advisor; Aurelia Ott, Editor; Gwen Sturkie. Assistant Editor. The first big event the members enjoyed this year was the State Fair and State meeting in Columbia. New members were welcomed into the club with an initiation party in September. The Mother-Daughter Banquet honoring the F. H. A. mothers was a great success this year. The F. H. A. members attended bi-county and district meetings. In December, the Bi-County meeting was held in St. Matthews with over 200 members attending. Last June, the president, Dorothv Zeigler, attended the state convention at Winthrop. All the F. H. A. members have been working hard to make their club one of the best. They are all striving for the motto Toward New Horizons. Agricultural Opportunities prepare shrubbery cuttings for bed. The F. F. A. is a national organization striving to promote agriculture and agricultural related occupations. The Chapter has 38 mem- bers, which is an increase over last year's 28. For the past several years the St. Matthews Chapter has had many projects. These have in- cluded a plant hotbed, rooting bed, and a plant nursery. The Chapter also operates a conces- sion stand at home football games. This en- ables the boys participating to gain practical experience and to raise funds for the Chapter at the same time. From these funds, in the past year, the Chapter has bought a pickup which it has re- painted and for which a covered body has been constructed. The boys also participated in area dairy-and livestock-judging contests. Both teams won in the Calhoun-Richland Federation and repre- sented the federation in the state judging con- test. In addition to these, some of the boys are raising pigs and calves for the Fatstock Show and Sale. Several boys hope to attend F. F. A. camp this summer and later on to attend the State F. F. A. Convention to be held in the fall. Boys get cuttings from shrubbery. Sammie Reid is shown admiring his FFA project, white Pekin ducks. A small island, located in the center of the gym, served as the refreshment center. The Vikings, a well-known dance band, presented music for the occasion. The menu for the evening carried out the theme. The servants, composed of several Sophomore girls and boys, worked hard but seemed to have enjoyed themselves. At twelve o'clock the band played their final selection, thus ending a perfect evening. 1964 Junior-Senior Melvin Raysor Bolton and Rebecca Smith look forward to a big night. The year of '64 has been a most rewarding one for the Juniors. The first project was that of the magazine sales. The goal was $1200 which was exceeded by $800. This was the best salesmanship ever displayed by members of a Junior class at St. Matthews High School. The annual turkey supper was also a great success. Due to the excellent job of advertis- ing and help of our sponsor, Mrs. Dean, the profit of the supper was $389.26.
