THE1964 SAINTS’ SCROLL Presented by the Senior Class of St. Matthews High School, St. Matthews, S. C. CONTENTS ADMINISTRATION ACTIVITIES FAVORITES CLASSES ADVERTISING FOREWORD Memories of things that we have encountered are very precious to us, but it is difficult to remember all these experiences. To help preserve our memory of events and experiences of this year, we have compiled this year's edition of the Saints' Scroll. We hope that this book will bring back all the memories of the past year--and that in the years to come you will treasure it. The Saints' Scroll is yours. You made it; we preserved it with words and pictures. The Student Council entertains the visiting and home teams after the home football games. The purpose of this project is to help establish a good re- lationship between the students of the two schools. The Council also has charge of Homecoming cere- monies. It has the responsibility for providing as- sembly programs at which the president presides. An outstanding project of our Council is support- ing a boy in a Korean orphanage. The money for his support is raised by selling school supplies and from collections from the student body. School elections for student body officers, May Court royalty, Homecoming queen, and cheer- leaders are conducted by the Student Council. Kim Yung Hui, bom in Korea in 1952, was adopted by the Student Council in 1961. O. Nelson, advisor. They all worked hard compiling a scrap book to enter in the judging at convention. Speaking of con- vention . . . That's where some of the members were, February 21-23. Besides being educational and informative, the convention also proved to be loads of fun! The money-making activity of the year was the car wash. The Betas worked all day cleaning the cars of their supporters. SAINTS’ SCROLL STAFF Mrs. Evelyn V. A Harvest Queen and Harvest Princess are crowned. This year Rita Hutto was Queen and Marge Wannamaker was Princess. A sock hop follows the Festival. The YELLOW JACKET sponsors another event in the spring. This varies from year to year. Margaret Anne Smoak, Editor; Miss Adams, Advisor; Owens Nelson, Assistant Editor. The chapter's activities include operation of a hot- bed, rooting bed, and nursery. The shrubbery is grown for home use and for sale. Some of the boys raised swine for the Orangeburg Fat Stock Show and for sale. Teams from members entered the contest for livestock, dairy, and soil judging held this year. They will also attend the FFA camp this summer and the State FFA Convention in the fall. Last year the Chapter bought one hundred shares of stock in the Grain Elevator at Charleston. This year they plan to start a savings account. FFA boys are justly proud of their successful projects. Toward New Horizons is the motto of thirty-eight girls who are all members of the Future Homemakers of America. The FHA has had a very busy year. Twenty-one members of the FHA and FFA enjoyed the State meet- ing and the State Fair held in Columbia. New mem- bers were welcomed into the club with an initiation party in September. In November the girls entertained their mothers with the annual Mother-Daughter Banquet. Members of the FHA have attended and taken part in the district, bi-county, and county meetings. Last summer Bonnie Inabinet, president, attended the state convention at Winthrop College for three days. Under the leadership of Mrs. Pitts FHA girls sold doughnuts and Stanley products to make money for summer camp, the FHA-FFA party, and a trip in the summer. These are the high spots in the life of a FHA girl. FUTURE HOMEMAKERS FHA bus driver, Jimmy Broody, doubles as bathing beauty at the beach. Angela and Dorothy enjoy the sun on the beach. FUTURE FARMERS SMHS ORGANIZES PEP CLUB The Pep Club encourages student attendance at all athletic events. Spring of 1963 found a group of indus- trious SMHS students planning and organiz- ing a much needed pep club. The club, open to all students, encourages students to take part in school activities. The club is guided by an executive council made up of class representatives and the club officers who are under the direction of a sponsor. The Pep Club has been very successful in building up the school spirit of the stu- dents by sponsoring parties and pep rallies. These trips were financed by the proceeds from the band projects. After much hard work, the band introduced the Christmas season with a concert. During the Christmas season our band was invited to march in several parades, including the Carillon Parade in Columbia. At the Amvets Parade in Columbia on December 7, the band won third place in the marching contest. The Band Booster Club, composed of parents of band members, promotes the band projects. This year the band sold Kool School stools, fruit cakes, and birthday calendars. As a reward, the hard-working members were given a Christmas party by the Booster Club. At the end of a successful year, die band presented the annual spring concert. Band takes a bow after the concert. Fight songs encourage the football players. 21 The Band helped to make the first homecoming parade a success. BASKETBALL REQUIRES HARD Swansea blocks Molly’s shot for two points.
