Class History As we look back over the twelve years that we, as first graders, expected to be long tiresome ones, we find twelve fleeting years that we can only capture through memories. Here stands on the threshold of graduating, a class of 55; 26 of whom were eager beavers starting the first grade of St. Matthews Grammar School together in September 1948. Our attempts to master the three R's were made under the patient guidance of many outstanding teachers who will never forget, nor be forgotten by, the class of 1961. These first years of our educational life not only broadened our knowledge of books, but also disposed of the halos worn by this gentle group and horns began sprouting very fast. Grammar school days brought about problems that we were certain would be the hardest we would ever face. How wrong we were, for as we graduated from tliat so-called challenge, we came face to face with greater obstacles. Now we have gained our footing in the high school, and we turned eagerly to the goals of physics, chemistry, Latin, French, and many others that we have to conquer. At many times we have felt we were groping through a dark corridor, but with an understanding faculty, light began to shine; and now we find ourselves nearing the end of our journey in the halls of S.M.H.S. Having taken our place in high school activities also, we gained the right to have the spotlight as: Alice was elected Maid of Honor for the 1960 May Court; Russell and Tommy were Boys’ State Representatives; Alice and Pam were Girls' State Representatives; Pam was head cheerleader for three years; Henry Herbert was vice-president of the student body for our junior year; Russell was president of the student body in our senior year; the titles of Miss DAR went to Pam and Miss Hi Miss to Alice; Ricky Nickells was a semi-finalist in the National Merit Scholarship Examination; Henry Herbert and Billy, co-captains, led our football team to runner-up for the State Champions; Pam and Sybil were elected co- captains of the girls' basketball team; Bobbie Hutto became Homecoming Queen of 1960; Mary Jane and Donna became editors of the Yellow Jacket and the Saints’ Scroll respectively; and we have gained the title of Graduating Class of 1961. Here is only a short summary of our past for there are many other memories each holds 17 dear within his heart.
