FOREWORD The future is ours . . . ours to mold and shape as we choose. But the past is also ours . . . ours to cherish in memories. Memories are as much a part of us as life itself. As we look to the future, we cannot forget the past. For some of us the days at S. M. H. S. will soon be memo- ries . . . memories we wish to keep. The Annual Staff presents this I960 edition of the Saints' Scroll to the student body with the hope that in years to come it may remind them of happy days then gone beyond recall. ADMINISTRATION H. No one can answer the last of these questions. But go back into the past with me and help the Seniors relive some of their past. Our first seven years were ones filled with high hopes and great disap- pointments. We dreamed of the day when we would graduate, because we felt that when that day came, we would have acquired all the knowledge in the world. However, now we realize that rather than having reached an ending of knowledge, we have only begun to learn. Now that we were finally in high school, we found ourselves again, as in the first grade, a Gulliver in the land of giants. But our feeling of littleness soon vanished, and we acquired an air of importance. Billie Gene Tallon joined our class and Mrs. Oean joined the faculty the second semester as our history teacher. She must have really liked us, because some of us have been in her class every year since then. We finally gained a title--Freshmen. This year we learned there were such things as Algebra and Latin in existence. However, we managed to pass and became sophomores--one step closer to our goal. Charlotte Savitz and Mary Kaye Thomas left our class to become Juniors. During this year we were taught many important things: from Mr. Carter, how to dissect a worm and from Mr. Hart, how to dodge chalk. Mary Joyce Rucker, Susan Buyck, Bonnie Swygert, Linda Hill, Johnnie Lou Taylor, Jan Smoke, William Bolton, Irving Cohen, and Johnny Bruce Burns were elected to serve as waiters at Junior-Senior. Juniors--was it really us? Mrs. Dean and Mr. Horne were really given a fit as our Homeroom teachers. Through our efforts on the magazine sale and turkey supper, we scrapped up enough money to entertain the Seniors in a Ro- man Villa. This year our football team, for the first time, captured the State Championship. Billie Gene Tallon, Kathleen Crook, Jarrott Brandenburg, Jan Smoke, and William Bolton represented our school at Girls' and Boys' State. Kennith Smith and Marilyn Craig completed our present Senior Class. 1959 — Forty-seven faces stared two teachers helplessly in the face—we the Seniors--asking Mrs. Crutchfield and Miss McKenzie where would we get the money for our trip? The football team again won the Lower-State Champ- ionship and were runners-up for the State Championship. Billy Kaigler was selected to play in the Shrine Bowl; Kathleen Crook was Miss D.A.R.; and Linda Hill, Miss Hi Miss. Jan Smoke was President of the Student Body and Captain of the Boys Basketball team; Sammy Michaux and Billy Kaigler were Co-Captains of the Football team; and Mary Joyce Rucker was Captain of the girls Basketball team. This is our past, and soon we will find ourselves again in a world of bigger people. As we go our separate ways, we extend to you, our teachers and friends, our thanks, which cannot be expressed in words, for the many things you have done for us to make our davs at S. M. H. S. both haDDv and orofitable ones. THE SENIOR CLASS CLASS OFFICERS L. toR. William Bolton, Vice President; Kathleen Crook, President; Johnny Brooks Spigrer, Secretary; Linda Hill, Treasurer.
