Our minis were never paralized; Our eyes were never blind. Some days were hard to struggle through, Our thoughts refused to hold, Our minds were toward a later date; Our hearts set for a goal. So now we've gained our yardage And have set a steady gait. We all look forward to the night We all will graduate. But when we've reached our hard earned goal Some will be in sorrow, For none knows what the ‘ uture brings Except a new tomorrow. Our knowledge will be helpful Even though we laugh or cry. For our knowledre a l was gained At old St. Matthews High. bv Willie M. Carter

CLASS HISTORY Let us turn the pages of time back twelve, long, thrill-packed years and trace our steps through school. We find ourselves eager first graders under the i- rection of Miss Harmon and Miss Smith. Do you remember the chicken pen we built in the cloakroom? We watched the eggs eagerly every day and after the little chicks were hatched we enjoyed taking care of them. In the second grade with Miss Ryan and Miss Shine as our teachers, we presented the memorable skit, Little Black Sambo. Almost everyone went into hysterics when one of the tigers lost its tail. At this point we became one unified group entering the thi d grade with Mrs. Wiggins as our instructor. This was the year we learned there were such things as exams, and we haven't been able to forget them. Mrs. Hiott, our fourth grade teacher, taught us something we shall never forget - - - the multiplication tables] As fifth graders we won a trip to Columbia for buyinr the most Christmas Seals. We visited State Park and the State House. It was during this year Mrs. Senn's reading thrilled us with the experiences of Two Little Confederates and Huckleberry In the sixth grade we studied South Carolina history and visited Charleston in connection with our study. Miss Almeida, who became Mrs. Riley that Christmas, was our teacher. Mr. Crider taught us as seventh graders. Those were the days of puppy love lectures and being excused to paint play scenery. It seems as if Gloria and Earl have ignored those lectures.' We entered the portals of SMHS with almost as much fright and just as much curiosity as we had when we entered the first grade. Our class was tremendously increased in the eight grade bm the addition of students from Sunny Plain. Sandy Run, and Belleville. ’ We really became a part of high school in the ninth grade when three of our fellow students were elected cheerleaders. The class contributed many participants in all the extra-curricula activities and several star athletes. As sophomores the home economics students were the envy of the entire student body when the tempting aroma of the food they cooked made our mouths water. In the eleventh grade we originated the Powder Bowl game in which the junior and sophomore girls battled on the gridiron. Sara was the star of the game, scoring the only touchdown. Mrs. O'Neal and Mrs. Tatum, our sponsors directed our superb Junior play, Mama's Baby Boy. On the evening of Arril 25, 1952, the gym was transformed into an Under the Sea setting for our Junior-Senior Banquet. At last we became long dreamed of seniors. Football shared the limelight and SMHS produced some fine athletes. Mackie, Billy Wannamaker, Larry, Archie, and Billy Bates made the all-state teams, and Mackie even won national recognition. That was the year Coach Ott was chosen to coach the all-star team. St. Matthews was the site for the District 9 basketball tournament in which we participated. As this goes to press we are anticipating a successful baseball season. We are also looking forward to the Powder Bowl game and the night of April 17, which is the date for Junior-Senior Banciuet. Our praises and heartfelt thanks go to Mrs. Crutchfield and Mrs. O'Neal for their wonderful guidance and patience this our senior year. We are now to disband as a class and enter the complex world as individuals. We realize the future will bring with it many problems and tribulations, but we have confidence that our experiences in ’’MHS have prepared us to meet them with fortitude and courage. So as we depart, dear St. Matthews High, we bid you farewell.' The years here have been wonderful. Carolyn Inabinet
