As we recall our days at St. Matthews High Our hearts are heavy and we surpress a sigh. Though we look forward to our life ahead We leave our school days with sadness and dread. We think of our teachers, always so near, Our memories of them will ever be dear. They gave us their help when we were in need In the hope that through them we might succeed. First year, first day, first teacher, first books -- the list could go on indefinitely, but really it all adds up to just one thing -- first grade! And what a scared little bunch of big shots we were! Our teacher, Miss Neal, was a dream and, of course, we all dearly loved her. After ending our first grade career, we found ourselves studying hard as members of the second grade. Under Miss Cleland's leadership, we soon became experts at working arithmetic problems and at coloring. Miss Taylor and the third grade found us to be a mischievous crew. Who can forget those fights that the boys used to have? It looked at one time like we would have at least one world's champion boxer from our class. Our first experience with that activity so dear to the hearts of all SMHS students (Exams, you know) occurred in the fourth grade, but with Miss McMillan's guidance we managed to get past them with a minimum of casualties. The fifth grade found Miss Kennedy struggling to get into our hard heads that is, are, was, and were are parts of the verb to be and not individual verbs. When we reached the sixth grade Miss Kennedy (No, we didn't really fail, she went up with us. ) was almost convinced herself that is, are, was, and were are four separate, distinct verbs and that they most assuredly (according to us) have absolutely nothing whatever to do with the verb to be . Being a senior in grammar school was such fun. We definitely were big shots then. That was the year that Mr. Crider taught us and as he was also the grammar school principal, he often had to stay in the office to work. Naturally, we ran wild! As might be expected, the change from grammar school seniors to high school freshmen (But no, we weren't even freshmen until we were in the ninth grade; I suppose we just existed in the eighth.) certainly subdued us, and for a while we felt like lost chickens. It didn't take us too long, though, to become accustomed to changing rooms and teachers, and to decide that it definitely was an improvement over grammar schooi. It was in the ninth grade (You see, I knew I would get us in high school if I kept writing long enough) that we were introduced into that magic realm with the long name, extra-curricula activities. Every sport and every club in high school soon had enthusiastic members from our class. The tenth grade was one of struggles for many of us. OH! those classes of biology, Latin, English, history, and algebra. Who could forget them! Our junior year was one that we were all proud of. Our class Play, Here Comes Charlie, set the mood and provided the lovely background for our Junior-Senior banquet. It was here in the eleventh grade that Miss Fox became our advisor, and it was she who helped us through the trials and tribulations of our last two hectic years of high school. Honest-to-goodness seniors, at last! Oh, the excitement of being able to show off our class rings, ordering our commencement invita- tions, getting our caps and gowns, and all the other things that go with finishing school. For our class play we gave a minstrel, Sugar Foot, and was it a howling success! Our high school days are over now, but we are certain that the knowledge, good times, and friendhips, which we acquired here will go with and will help us throughout our adult lives.
