LIFE FOR THE GRADUATE IS Nof finished, iusf begun. Remember fhe classic riddle of Oedipus Rex. Whaf walks on 4 feef in fhe morning, 2 af noon, and 3 in fhe evening? The an- swer is 'a human being,' who while young, crawls on hands and feefg af fhe noon of life walks erecf on fwog and in fhe evening of life, wifh fhe aid of a cane. In a sense, up fo now you have walked on four feef, wifh fhe assisfance of parenfs and feachers. Buf now you musf sfand on your own fwo feef. Decisions in fhe pasf were small ones and you had help: now fhere will be im- porfanf ones, many of which you shall have fo make yourself. You are enfering info a wider life, more complex, more inferesfing, more excifing. Success does nof consisf in money, posifion, popularify or pleasure. If does consisf in fhe money of good works, fhe power of infercession, popularify wifh God. If people can look on you and say: She is rich in good works: she is powerful and has greaf influence in Heaven: she is popular wifh God-fhen you are a success. Maferial success can be combined wifh if, buf nof necessarily so. Nine-fenfhs of fhe people of fhis world are a failure according fo fhe world's sfandarcl-buf fhe same nine-fenfhs can be successful according fo God's sfandard. LEARNING FOR THE GRADUATE IS NOT FINISHED, JUST BEGUN. If fhere is one fhing your educafion should have faughf you if is fhis fhaf fhere is sfill much fo learn. Your dip- loma is no more a guaranfee of your learning, fhan your bapfismal cerfificafe is of your salva- fion. Don'f be like fhe young lady who was heard fo say: When I was eighfeen, my parenfs were so ignoranf fhaf 'I was ashamed fo have fhem around my friends buf' when I gof fo be fwenfy-one I was asfonished fo find ouf how much fhey had learned in fhree years. HAPPINESS FOR THE GRADUATE IS NOT FINISHED, JUST BEGUN. I Many of you will hear people say your school days are your happiest Perhaps you will say fhaf some day in fhe evening of your life. I hope nof, because if shouIdn'f be fhaf way. Happier'days are in sfore for you provided you keep a frue Cafholic ouflook on life, and sfay close fo God and fo Our Blessed Mofher. STAY CLOSE TO GOD-No Cafholic girl can ever be fruly happy who runs away from God and His love. You are going ouf info a world of which we are none foo proud.. If if fhoughf fhaf if could gef along wifhouf God: and now if is facing squarely fhe frufh fhaf fhough God can gef along wifhouf us, we cannof gef along wifhouf God. And so if is wifh fhe Individual. As long as we sfay close fo God He will be close fo us. . f STAY CLOSE TO OUR BLESSED MOTHER. During your school years you learned fo love, admire, and confide in Our Blessed Mofher. The facf fhaf you sfudied af Sf. Mary's means some, fhing fo her-and I'm sure will mean somefhing fo you. If gives you yef anofher claim on her love. In imporfanf decisions, gef her approval, 'Ihe source of Wisdom on whose greaf decision de- pended fhe success of our salvafion. lAnd should you ever sfray foo far from God-may fhe bells of Sf. Mary's call you back.l

Happy be- cause you should feel a deep sense of ioy and safisfacfion in obfaining somefhing longed-for, ac- complishing a long arduous fask, af reaching a goal. Through serious applicafion fo work, and by following fhe able direcfion of your devofed feachers you are a success. The fwinge of sadness fhaf comes af fhe end of your school days, because of fhe severing old fies and associafions, is a good sign fhaf your school days, were happy ones. If fhis is a Happy day if is also an lM- PORTANT one. For as you pass from fhe sfage of 'school girl' fo 'young woman,' you are abouf fo sef ouf-more or less alone-on fhe journey of life. No maffer whaf your choice of vocafion may be: no maffer fhrough whaf pafhs your iourney in life may fake you, foday marks fhe commence- menf of fhaf evenfful iourney. Whaf your feachers, parenfs and priesfs would like fo fell you as you bid goodbye fo your High School days could nof be more fiffingly summed up. fhan by your class moffo: 'Noi' finished, iusf begun'. Neifher life, learning, nor happiness end wifh your graduafion.
