In addition to our regular courses, classes entitled Economic Geography, General Mathematics, and Mechanical Drawing were introduced this year. A mature study of geography is an imperative background for the understanding of the international current events which threaten our survival. For those who still hope to build a better world, mechanical drawing provides the foundation for careers in engineering and architecture. At St. Mary's, we, who had considered it one of our greatest privileges to have lived our entire lives under the protection of so saintly a shepherd, prayed our noon hour rosary with renewed fervor. When we could no longer pray for him, we began to pray to him, for the Church he had served until death, and tor his successor John XXIII. Mary's plays host to 50 Catholic Colleges- Helen Esser and her parents collect literature and advice from several tables. Catholic College Conference night, held this year on November l4, was the largest in our seven year series. Following a catered dinner with St. Mary's faculty, representatives from colleges and universi- ties all over the United States united in an effort to guide St. Mary's seniors, iuniors, and sophomores to the selection of a college suited to their needs, talents, and finances. Among the fifty colleges re- presented were: Notre Dame, Marquette, George- town, Fordham, and, of course, our Dominican col- leges, Providence and Caldwell. Slide proiectors flashed attractive campus views, yearbooks and other college publications recorded activities, and catalogues and leaflets explained the entrance requirements and courses offered. Every student departed with a few pounds of literature and a deeper sense of pride in the tre- mendous accomplishments of Catholic higher educa- tion. 37 A ,gf nf vb fe JOHN SLOAN QUARTER BACK PAUL BEVELHEIMER GUARD 1, ul ROBER! This, however, was spoiled by the team's unfamiliarity with foreign courts, resulting in a 1-10 record at away games. An overall record totalling 6-13 does not present a fair picture of a truly exciting sea- son. When in winning form, it was hard to picture that this same team suffered so many losses. Coach Agel deserves special Commendation for his conversion of Dan Kelleher from an awkward iun- ior to the team's high scorer. Kelle- her had an average of more than 18 points per game which resulted from his soft iump shot, perfected after many hours of hard work. Jump, Marty, jump! Marty McGonigle goes up for the tap with Arts High opponent. 70 Other high scorers were Tom Holden and Marty McGonigle, each with averages of over ten points per game. Youngest of the high scorers was Arnie Kunz, who, pro- moted trom the Junior Varsity at mid-season, averaged nine points per game and, together with calm Phil Sheridan, was even more valu- able as a smooth ball handler. The inspired coaching of Jack Agel was in evidence every time his players took to the court. The team was led in scoring by George Nash with a 15 point per game average, while Jack Heywood and Phil Sheridan held ll and lO point per game averages. Rebounds were handled by Terry Kelleher and George Nash. Freshman Jim Kelly moved up to the first string as Arnie Kunz advanced to the varsity. Jim Dressel, lrv Paulus, Richie Higgins, and Joe Petrillo enioyed especially those 20 and 30 point leads which enabled them to abandon the bench for many a quarter. The team did equally well at home and away. Defeating Pope Pius, lm- maculate Conception, Bayley Ellard, and Stevens Academy both at home and away proved their ability to adapt to any court. By mid-season the entire first string had been promoted to the varsity and were playing double headers . St. Mary's looks to its future varsity with great expectations. Then the varsity came back, bringing the score to a close margin. Again they let the faculty get ahead. After the half, the faculty still kept fighting and gave the Gaels more competition than they had expected. However, the varsity was able to gain a lead and defeated the faculty in the last quarter of the game. Outstanding in the game were: Coach Charles Agel, who applied many of the tactics he has instilled in the varsity team this post season, Jock Agel who racked up many points throughout the game, and Coaches George Viosovich and Jack Jones who displayed their ability to play the game both from the floor and the free-throw line. New on the faculty bench this year, were Mr. Smith, Mr. Scanlon, and Mr. Foy who aroused a great deal of excitement and applause from spectators throughout the match. However, there was one unexpected addition to the faculty squad, which was a surprise to many of the specta- tors, Bill Vezo who coached the Fresh- men and is also a student, participated to a lively tune and contributed a great deal to the team. The models, members of the Business Club, wore fashions from Abbott's Department Store in Passaic. The weeks of preparation necessary to assemble the clothes, ranging from sports to evening wear, required many hours of business con- tact which aftorded the girls an opportunity to put into prac- tice their business training. The girls were taught the proper posture and graceful car- riage to show their clothes to the very best advantage. Select- ing the right outfits, complete with accessories, was very necessary training in choosing dress most becoming and in good taste for today's successful secretary. That good taste and attractive style go hand in hand with modesty was strik- ingly demonstrated by this Mary-like fashion show. Julia Hotbauer models casual wear suitable for a campus week-end. A mere glance at an outline of the league's activities for this year is sufficient to reveal how intensive and extensive are the efforts of St. Mary's public speaking department to achieve the goal of the National Catholic Forensic League: Articulate Catholic Leadership. Many were saddened by the passing of Hugo, the friend, the son, the brother. But sadness is consolecl by one blissful thought, Hugo has been taken from troubled, mortal life to enjoy happy, eternal life. Each year ten percent of the senior class is elected by the faculty to become members of this organization. The students must have ex- hibited a true sense of values and high moral standards, in short, fine character. Their scholar- ship must have been demonstrated by con- sistent academic achievement. They must have displayed ability to set the pace, to do what is right even if they are one among many, to lead. They must have been willing to work to capacity, to use their talents for the benefit of others, they must have served. The fifteen students pictured on these pages met these exacting standards. We are proud to present the 1959 Marian Chapter of the National Honor Society.
