The need for such an educational unit had been seen and, with customary confidence in God, Monsignor, then Father Tichler, made ambitious plans for expansion. With a faculty consisting of two self-sacrificing nuns, Sister M. Thomasine, 0.P. and the late Sister M. Annunciation, 0.P. and a small student body, the first semester was launched. Each term additions were made to the faculty in proportion to the ever increasing enrollment. The new high school building reared its lofty dome at completion. On September 8, 1932 a faculty, increased in size, with Sister Hyacinth, 0.P. at the helm as Principal and several hundred students moved in to enjoy the luxury of its accommodations. A work begun with prayer and sacrifice was bound to go forward. The school grew as its reputation became known. Boys and girls from parishes other than St. Mary's, avid for the advantages of Catholic education, were willing to travel great distances by bus and railroad in order to be numbered among the students. On September 14, 1954, the twenty-fifth entrance date, the school opened its doors to a registration of four hundred fifty. This large number presented a challenge to the seating plan and as a result there have begun dreams of an addition to St. M ary,s. Your life has been fruitful and full. May you continue to grow in imparting wisdom and invoking grace before God and man. E in r aging .4- Lif -i R O an 1 0 i M l. ? xi I M 3 ...W-' ' , .fn R' Q 2 J . J .., in 0 First Row ll Io rl: R. The administrative stag endeavored to provide a curriculum broad enough to satisfy diversity and orderly enough to fulfill requirements. This being accomplished, additional faculty members with the necessary credentials for teaching, especially in the fields of language, mathematics and science were sought. The Sisters of St. Dominic of Caldwell had members thus prepared and the very best of them were sent to St. Mary,s. On October 6, 1933 the State Board of Education gave a Class-A rating to St. Mary's which rating has been maintained through to the twenty-fifth anniversary. This phase of your life has Sent graduates into schools of higher education and into the business world so well equipped that glory is added to your record. The Corona, the school paper, made its initial appearance in 1930 in the form of a hand-mimeographed sheet. The Corona of today is a professionally printed ten page publication of which we can justly be proud. Other firsts of 1930 were the Boys' and Girls' Basketball teams which made a creditable start, setting the precedent for successive teams which have fought for the glory of S. M. H. The Spring of 1932 saw the first Baseball team work out on the diamond and although for several seasons no team was formed, the last few years have seen S. M. H. doing creditably in the great American sport. The Fall of the same year produced a football eleven which played a successful season. Subsequent seasons have proven the stamina and sportsmanship of the Gaels who have had many highly successful seasons including undefeated ones. The first Junior Prom was held on June 9, 1933 and since that date, the prom has been an outstanding event with each class developing its theme with originality, charm, and beauty. The Student Council was established in 1933 and today we are justly proud of our organization which functions in such a democratic manner. The Debating Club and the Dramatic Society which were formed in 1933 also continue today, the later under the title of Dramatics and the former as a component of the Forensic League. The first year book Memories came off the press in 1934. In 1935 the name was changed to Veritas which title, with all that implies, is still given to our year book. Music with its charms took an important place in the program of activities and the ardor of the early groups has been passed on to the Glee Clubs of the present. The re-organized band The Queenl' is noteworthy in its accomplish- ments The Sodality of Our Lady, which is the core of our spiritual life, is active in many fields. It owes its vigor to the sincerity of the students of whose aim is to reach Jesus through Mary. You have opened to us spiritual, cultural, and physical avenues. You have aroused our interests, moved our imaginations, and lifted our spirits in such a manner that Your Lifev has helped us to live more fruitfully. i - -lp F C -il , l --, Iii Uur Lad Sodalists at St. Mary's are stimulated by monthly Communion and animated hy enthusiastic meetings. The Gaels started off on the wrong foot by taking a sound 33-7 trouncing from the strong St. Benedict's Eleven. They redeemed themselves by trampling Immaculate Conception in a 26-0 game. The favorable result of an encounter with a fair Yvallington team was 24-6. LaSalle took the long trip from Long lsland only to meet defeat by the score of 39-13. St. llarfs was set back on its 'heels for the set-pntktiiite wlien geton Hall Page Sixty-lu'o chalked up a 30-7. Undaunted. the Gaels retaliated by edging out, in a nip-and-tuck game, a strong North Arlington team, 14-13. ln turn, Queen of Peace fell prey to the gal- loping Gaels, 19-6. Pope Pius, using a tricky offensive, scored two touchdowns before the Gaels rocketed ahead to win out 32-20.
