With quiet advice and calm directions the Council maintains order between classes. The Council is composed of the cream of the upper classes. The aim of every student is to one day stand in their honored positions. And well worth while is that ambition too. lt's wonderful to be a member of the school's Body ot Trust. Just as St. Mary's, the school, holds its head high among its kind so does its student council rank in disciplinary school bodies. And so they stand quietly alert, our Sentinels of Silence and safety-the Student Council. St. Mary's Hiiw i -f h L l. l l l we KLJAQJ Mrgin Lsbclagfy HIS year the entire student body joined the Blessed Virgin Sodality, under the spiritual guidance of Father Sherry. The following officers were elected: John Heaney, Prefect, Doris Bowles, Vice-Prefect, Audrey Leonard, Secretary, and Mary Ebert, Treasurer. The student body has given its whole-hearted cooperation in every under- taking, making success possible. The Literary committee with Arthur Clare as chairman, has collected magazines and distributed them to hospitals and other institutions, the Apostolic Committee, having Verna Nugent for chair- man, has done exceptionally great work in distributing baskets, working for the missions and collecting Propagation of the Faith dues. The Eucharistic Committee, of which Joan Nash is chairman, helped to promote more fre- quent communion and a deeper love of the Blessed Sacrament. Our Lady's Committee with Josephine Scelsa as chairman, has bought flowers for Our Lady's altar, supplied the students with Miraculous Medals, and encouraged the members to say more rosaries, especially during the months of October and May. Benjamin Findlow as chairman of the Social Committee directed his efforts to the further development of social activities in the school. l-le was aided considerably by Francis Lopacienski, Chairman of the Publicity Committee, whose posters are familiar to the students. The Sodality made a good start this year and has indeed showed splendid results. Let us hope that the good work will continue next year and every year. GERTRU DE KNYFF. H940 Veritas i OUP 0I 0l'lG, N September, the Student body elected a Corona staff which they thought capable of upholding the fine reputation the Coronas in the past had establised. Both the staff and the student body in general lent that spirit of coopera- tion so essential for achievement, and, as a result, the edition of the Corona in October was commendable. Its literary works, class news, editorials, per- sonalities, poems and witticisms, provided interesting reading. ln sharp contrast to our machine-printed monthly, is the first Corona, one decade ago, which was a hand-printed publication. Owing to the con- sistent improvement of the Corona, we have today a school paper representa- tive of St. Mary's High School. One which expresses personal opinions, and gives vent to the student's journalistic abilities. And so, as the first decade of the Corona draws to a close, we of the staff of '40 extend a heart-felt thank-you to the faculty, and to all those who have been so generous with their assistance. To the l94l staff we give our hearty congratulations. Into your hands we confidently place the Corona with our sincerest wishes for success. ' St. Mary s High Le CM EORGANIZING for the fifth consecutive year, the Glee Clubs of St. Mary's High School set forth under the guidance ofa new directress, with their characteristic determination for success. Ae Queen HIS year will always remain red lettered in the history of St. Mary's. At last we had our band-in uniform! Three times the Queen stole the show -at the final football game, at the concert and at the Car- nival. One could almost see the pride we all felt in our band. Heads up, shoulders back, resplendent in blue and white, they marched. Not to men- tion the almost West Point magnificence of their leader, John Heaney. But even a band would not be complete without the feminine touch. That too was provided-in the person of three agile majorettes, fair examples of the beauty of St. Mary's. This is only the beginning. lt is the ambition of The Queen to become the best band-orchestra in the state. And looking at the progress it has made in only two years, it looks as if it will realize that ambition, but soon. DORIS BOWLES '4O. Throughout their hard sched- ule the Saints carried only eighteen players, a squad which turned in a creditable record considering the size and number of the team. Defeat was felt five times of the six contests played, however, the opposition con- fronted was that of a higher caliber than teams of the past have met. The spirit and gameness of the team was never dampened, as is evidenced by the closeness of the scores. Eleven iron men traveled to Lyndhurst where they received a sur- prisingly close defeat from the Golden Bears by the score of 6 to 0. Let- ting up only once in the sixty minute gruelling battle, the team earned a moral victory from the heavy and experienced victors. Tom Kelly stood out on the field, as did Andy Schimpf, who received an injury, which lost him to the team for the rest of the season. ln succession, following the grand tie with Saint Cecelia, the Mary- men lost to Saint Michaels of Jersey City in an excellent game-7 to 6, then came the Cardinals of Saint Peter's, where a crowd of 2,500 fans wit- nessed the tilt at the victor's home field at New Brunswick. The Blue and White of Amboy won a somewhat questionable game, when our Gaels suf- fered 70 yards in penalties. Finally the Wildcats of East Rutherford gained its victory in the last minute of a Frank Merriwell ball game to the tune of i8 to I3. lt will be noted that l3 points was the highest scored on the Cats including Garfield until the Bruni-men encountered them. To mention a few of the grand Gaels-it will be remembered that Tony Natale almost won the East Rutherford game with his two blocked kicks. Bob Von Hoene was voted the team's outstanding player, an award which he certainly deserved. From Moe Muller to Occ O'Connor the iron men were a credit, and not a deficiency to their S. M. H. S. I3 ARTHU R CLARE '40 tas l I jaC ian! l T the writing of this article, there have been, as yet, no track meets. Only a few practices have been held, but these have been sufficient to prove that the returning veterans have retained their old form over the winter months and are now ready to give for St. Mary's. l Our star middle distance man, Francis Lopacienski, is digging in with more vigor and striding out with more force this year, realizing that with the honorary position ot captain comes the duty of setting a good example. Red Burns, who last year won medals in State Meets, and Joe Flynn, who proved to be the prize rookie of last season, have both shown possi- bilities of attaining even greater heights than last year. v Besides these, there are those old reliables, Kuscinski, Kevil, Blackton and Hickey, who can always be counted on for a good performance. We have the material and the student backing, so there is little need to worry over what the record will show at the end of the season. In any event, we know it will be the best that the boys had to offer. l l St. Marys High s l gafietgaf T. MARY'S cagers ot the '39 and '40 season turned in the excellent record of thirteen wins and but tour losses. During the seventeen game schedule the Gael's quintet ran up win streaks of tour and tive straight all to the credit of S. M. H. The team had grand support from the students which they whole-heartedly deserved. Building around veterans Brudnicki, Wyner and Rogers, Coach Dupes turned out one of the finest teams to represent the Blue and White. Playing with lack ot height which was supplanted by a smooth functioning, speedy squad the Dupesmen ran over all its opponents but the Saints ot Perth Am- boy who handed the Gaels two of its four defeats. The team worked brilliant- ly under the steadiness ot Blackie Wyner. This boy was the spark plug in an A number l quintet. Wyner rang up 24 digits against Woodridge for an all time high for our Gaels. The contest at Montclair with Immaculate Conception was the outstand- ing game played during the schedule. Gaining two wins from each of East Rutherford, Woodridge, Lodi and Don Bosco plus one from the Alumni, St. Cecelia, Immaculate, Lyndhurst and Hasbrouck Heights called attention to the Gaels. Invitations to the State H940 Veritas Tournaments were forthcoming but the loss of Wyner dampened the team's spirits and play, as they lost a heart-breaker to St. Cecelia 34 to 33. They then traveled to Elizabeth where they encountered St. Patrick's wherein an excellent game was played with a victory for the Green of 29 to 28. Captain Brudnicki and John McGowen were the bulwark of the defense, for it was grand to perceive George playing his fine floor game. McGowen was also a fine shot and could be counted on to score for our Saints. Rogers, the sophomore flash, turned in a grand year, not to forget Kelly, the lad who played varsity in his freshman year and will be the mainstay of next year's squad. In the tournament Tom Kelleher subbing for Wyner starred, and his grand attempt to bring victory to the Saints will not be forgotten. Looking forward to next court season, the team will lose Brudnicki, Wyner, McGowen, Cartier, and Von Hoene through graduation. However, Dupes will build around Kelly, Kelleher, and Rogers. Inter-class competition has undoubtedly uncovered some excellent material for the basketball glory of St. Mary's '.
