SMITH I 6 E C m mf E H E Y YQ I' 1' I I , , 1 - I SENIQIQS Class of '37 HAT a yawning chasm lies befween The digniTy of The graduaTing class of The grammar school and The respecfful TimidiTy of a high school freshman. BuT we, The Class of '37, jumped from our elemenTary school prominence To whaT we Then considered The ignominy of being a freshman, wiTh The ease and grace ThaT has always characTerized our class. One sunshiny day we were escorTed wiTh much formalify and ceremony inTo The large audiTorium, and amid expressions of soliciTude for our fuTure welfare we were presenfed wiTh our schedules and infroduced To The faculTy. Affer much confusion we gradually became accusTomed To The rouTine of high school life and luckily were noT subjecTed To any abuse from our upper classman, The Sophomores. ThroughouT our firsT year aT ST. Mary's, The Class of '37 did iTs share To supporT The school. AThleTic evenTs, The plays, and The yearbook by The Class of '34 were ably supporfed by The Freshman Class. So wenT The firsT year. As Time wenT on we became more acquainTed wiTh our school and when Moving-up Day arrived we were The besT of friends.. There was only one purpose in our minds aT ThaT Time and ThaT was To welcome The incoming freshman class in The same jovial spiriT wiTh which our friends, The sophomores had marked our arrival. And when The all Too shorT summer had passed and we reTurned To school, bronzed and bubbling over wiTh healTh and viTaliTy, we exTended our greef- ings To The class of '38 and endeavored To make Their firsT year aT ST. Mary's as pleasanT as possible. BuT now we were sophomores and wiTh ThaT TiTle wenT The imporTance and self- assurance which resulTed from our long and arduous submission as freshmen. We became more confidenT and love for our Alma lvlaTer Took form in The acTiviTies in which we engaged. Each To his naTural benT, our class graviTaTed info The fields of dramaTics, debaTing, journalism, music, and sporTs: and in each we aTTempTed To do honor To ST. lvlary's l-ligh School To The besT of our abiliTy. In our sTudi'es we pro- duced many honor sTudenTs who lafer were To have Their names placed on The Roll of Honor, The highesT honor in The school, awarded only To Those sTudenTs whose rec- ords are a source of pride To The faculTy and The sTudenT body alike. Thus, occupied wiTh work, play, and exfra-curricular acTiviTies, The year sped by, and before we realized iT we were juniors. We had now assumed a new role. We were beyond The naiveTe of The fresh- men, we scorned The callow presumpfion of The sophomore, and we sTill held in awe and reverence The digniTy and aloofness of The mighTy senior. IT remained for us To bask in reflecfed glory: ThaT is To say, we paTTerned our conducT and bearing afTer I8 +hose men and ladies who were +o gradua+e in June, and by vir+ue of our impending seniorship we donned a robe of calm sereni+y inferior only +o +ha+ worn by +he sen- iors +hemselves. T During our iunior year we were +or+una+e in being able +o hold a Junior Prom, and under +he able direc+ion of our +acul+y our ini+ial social en+erprise received +he acclama+ion o+ +he en+ire school. ln our senior year many memorable even+s have +aken place. We have wi+ness- ed his+ory in +he making, bo+h in our school and in +he a+Fairs o+ +he world. For +he 'Firs+ +ime in +he his+ory of S+. Mary's we have won +he annual +oo+ball game wi+h Lyndhurs+ played a+ Ru+her+ord Field, and i+ is wi+h pride +ha+ we read in +he iournals o+ +he day o+ our preeminen+ posi+ion in +he baslce+ball annals of +he s+a+e. Bu+ +oo+- ball and baslce+ball were no+ +he only spor+s +o bring glory +o S+. Mary's, for +rack and baseball were also well represen+ed. Wi+hin +he school i+sel+ we no+e +he ac- +ivi+y of +he senior class in represen+a+ive organiza+ions. The S+uden+ Council. +he Corona , +he Glee Clubs, +he Deba+ing Socie+y, and +he Drama+ic Socie+y7 all +hese groups bear on +heir ros+ers +he names o+ seniors. We have bu+ a shor+ +ime +o s+ay wi+hin +he shel+ered walls of our Alma Ma+er, and I+ is wi+h a sense o+ sorrow +ha+ we force ourselves even +o +hinlc o+ +his par+ing, inevi+able +hough i+ be. Le+ us dismiss +he +hough+ 'From our minds +or +he nonce and regard our +our years a+ S+. Mary's High School. Our +aces were s+ill round wi+h +he evidence 0+ our you+h+ulness. Now +hey have been shaped and molded in four years +o +he de- +ini+e, clear-cu+ ou+lines o+ young men and ladies. ln our +irs+ year we s+ill re+ained +he sligh+ +rame o+ adolescence. Today our shoulders are broader: our ches+s have deepened wi+h our voices. Bu+ i+ is no+ en+irely wi+h ex+erior change +ha+ we are concerned. There is an- o+her +rans+orma+ion which has been a+Fec+ed wi+hin us which we are only beginning +o realize as +ime goes on. l+ is +he charac+er which +he Sis+ers o+ S+. Dominic have molded wi+hin us, which +hey have s+reng+hened and shaped +or four years, devo+ing all +heir +ime and energies +o +his +aslc, in order +ha+ we, as +u+ure leaders of +his grea+ na+ion, may be able +o wi+hs+and +he onslaugh+ of +he world abou+ us. When +he +rial comes and we +ind +ha+ we have +he moral courage +o say nay +o +hose who would des+roy us, le+ us +hank +hese noble Sis+ers for +he gi++ of love which +hey have bes+owed upon us. They have given much and expec+ed no+hing in re+urn. Bu+ how gladdened are +heir hear+s when we come again and again +o visi+ S+. lv1ary's High School! l-low proud are +hey a+ our every success and how com+or+ing and encouraging when we s+umbIe under apparen+ de+ea+! Theirs is a labor 0+ love. and we, +he recipien+s o+ +he bene+i+s o+ +ha+ labor, owe +hem our unlimi+ed devo+ion, our unswerving loyal+y, and a heavy responsibili+y +o carry +he principles o+ Chris+ian educa+ion in+o our daily I 9 lives, in order ThaT we may do crediT To Their Teaching. How lighT should This debT weigh upon us, and how ioyTully will we repay, in This small way, our obligaTions To The SisTers oT ST. Dominic. BuT leT us Turn again To The sorrowful ThoughT oT our parTing Trom ST. Mary's High School, Trom all The ioyous associaTions which we have made here. Our Tour years have endeared To us every nook and cranny, every classroom, every TradiTion oT our Alma lv1aTer. Like ivy creeping over a wall, has This aTTecTion grown around and over us, enveloping our innermosT being wiTh a sense oT love and reverence Tor This, our school, and like The ivy, spreading new leaves and Tendrils wiTh The passing oT each clay. And wiTh This love we have a second giTT To Treasure,-The Triendships which we have made among our Tellow sTudenTs,, we hope, Tor all Time. Here, aT ST. lv1ary's High School, we have laughed, wepT, and rejoiced wiTh Them. We have shared Their ioys and sorrows, Their Triumphs have been our Triumphs, and Their de- TeaTs have been our deTeaTs. Here have been cemenTed bonds which shall hold ThroughouT The long years ahead, bonds whose every sTrengTh lies in our knowledge oT The TaulTs as well as The virTues oT our Triends. May we gaTher in The TuTure and recall wiTh Tender smiles and misTy eyes our happy days aT ST. lviary's High School! LasTly, we have Tound a closer Triendship wiTh God in our Tour years of high school. The example oT The SisTers, The aTmosphere oT True ChrisTianiTy which per- vades every associaTion, every conTacT-all These TacTors have enriched and deepened our spiriTual liTe. We have experiencd a ThreeTold ideal oT educaTion, a TriniTy oT pedagogy. ln laTer years iT shall be a bulwark againsT which The seas oT rampanT evil may dash in impoTenT Tury. As iT has susTained us in our brieT inTerval in high school, so shall iT be a mighTy buckler amid The perils oT The world ouTside These cloisTered halls. ' The sand in my hour-glass is almosT spenT. There is a rusTle oT caps and gowns in The noT disTanT TuTure. BuT beTore we bloT The page leT us join in a resoluTion. IT mighT be called The oaTh oT The Class oT '37, l can hear The sound oT a crowd as- sembling To Take ThaT oaTh. Their eyes are brighT, almosT Too brighT wiTh an emoTion which causes The TirsT Tew words oT The oaTh To choke and TalTer. BuT now iT rises like a mighTy chanT, The deep, clear voices of young men and ladies, avowing Their love and devoTion To Their school. LisTen! We, The Class oT I937, upon leaving The revered halls oT ST. lvlary's High School, pledge ourselves To love her name, To reverence her memory, To besTow our loyaliy and devoTion upon her educaTors, Thle SisTers oT ST. Dominic: To sTrive in every way To conducT our lives in such a manner ThaT all honor shall redound To her glory, and To The glory oT God. We pledge ourselves To mainTain The True Triendships which we made while in high school, and To keep green The memories which our associaTions have evoked. We shall endeavor To The heighT oT our abiliTy To live according To The principles oT a culTured, ChrisTian man and woman, and we shall never leT iT be said 20 ThaT we, ST. Mary's GraduaTes, have ever perTormed any acTs which would Tend To discrecliT our high school. We pledge ourselves To keep aglow in our hearTs The in- sTrucTion which has been imparTed To us, To supporT our Alma MaTer in every endeavor which she underTalces, and To engrave in leTTers oT gold upon our minds Those words which are The ToundaTion-sTone oT a compleTe and useful liTe,--Religion, MoraliTy, CulTure. The nucleus OT The Team was The five reTurning veTerans of The previous year. The lads were capable, wiThouT doubT, buT They were in need of TurTher seasoning. NOT only uniniTiaTed, They were small and lighT, which forced Coach Voile Dupes To perfecT a sysTem of play which would be suiTed To Their size and which would enable Them To compeTe successfully againsT larger opponenTs. We lose several men and several good men. FirsT among These To deparT, we may menTion CapTain Bill Fill. a capable, sTeady player. His clear-headed Thinking and consisTenTly good passing and offensive work made him invaluable To The Team. Bill was also The firsT ST. lv1ary's player To be placed on The All-CounTy Team. Edward O'Loughlin is graduaTing. Ed is a sTraTegisT and masTer of back courT play. His sTeadying influence and unerring passing made him invaluable To The Gaels. Godfrey Cassella, The high-iumping cenTer, is leaving also. Always in acTion wiTh abiliTy To geT The Tap and To drop in pop shoTs, Cassella did a very crediTable job. OThers To leave are Jim Reilly and Emil STayskal. AlThough noT considered for sTarT- ing roles, They neverTheless saw plenTy of acTion and disTinguished Themselves by some very fine play. Even wiTh The graduafion of These sfellar ball-players There are enough remaining To insure success for The fuTure. Among The oThers are Howard Van HouTen, defensive wizard and clever sTraTe- gisTg and WalTer Sikora, The fasT moving forward. Wifh These worThy players refurning again, more experienced and more skilled in Team play, There is good reason To expecT a conTinuaTion of Gael baskeTball forTunes. This season was a repeTiTion of The greaT Team of l935. ln local compeTiTion They fared well managing To Twice down Their local rival. And as good forTune would have iT ThaT parTicular rival was none oTher Than LyndhursT. All in all, The season was a greaT success wiTh The Dupesmen winning fourTeen of Their eighTeen games. Drawing a bye in The firsT round of The TournamenT The Gaels received a week of resT before playing Their firsf game. The scene was The large Orange Armory and The opponenT, Monfclair lmmaculaTe.
