Cross-Country 73 Run to the Top The '73 Cross Country team, coached by Mr. Drayton Riley linseti took its place alongside football and bas- ketball as a major segment of the schooI's extracurri- cular program. This accomplishment is due to tre- mendous effort and determination both on an indivi- dual and a team basis. On the individual basis, nine- teen medals were awarded to the runners, and as a team, second place trophies were awarded at the St. Mar 's and Pem Da Invitationals Third place plaques Y Y 0 were taken at the Liberty Invitational and at the Tong- anoxie Invitational. Effort was only one of the factors responsible for the team's winning season. The runners displayed lmmense personal achievement as they set new records and at- tained individual goals. At Oak Park, Jay Thompson broke the school record for the two mile, previously held by Jim Eskew, with a time of 10:18. Pat Marquis collected the greatest amount of points during the season with a grand total of 1842 points - another school record. Pat also holds the best sophomore rec- ord for the two mile t10:24l and Paul Thompson holds the best freshmen time with 11:08. The accomplishments this season could go on and on, but the real payoff will come with the opening of next season. With eight returning lettermen lPat Marquis, Jay Thompson, Matt Jecker, Paul Thompson, Dave Austin, Mike Ragsdale, Frank Pinon, and Steve Reyesl and much untapped potential, hopes are high for Coach Riley and the team as they continue their Run to the Top. 56 in Y' 3
