SPORTS Cross-Country 73 Run to the Top The '73 Cross Country team, coached by Mr. Drayton Riley linseti took its place alongside football and bas- ketball as a major segment of the schooI's extracurri- cular program. This accomplishment is due to tre- mendous effort and determination both on an indivi- dual and a team basis. On the individual basis, nine- teen medals were awarded to the runners, and as a team, second place trophies were awarded at the St. Mar 's and Pem Da Invitationals Third place plaques Y Y 0 were taken at the Liberty Invitational and at the Tong- anoxie Invitational. Effort was only one of the factors responsible for the team's winning season. The runners displayed lmmense personal achievement as they set new records and at- tained individual goals. At Oak Park, Jay Thompson broke the school record for the two mile, previously held by Jim Eskew, with a time of 10:18. Pat Marquis collected the greatest amount of points during the season with a grand total of 1842 points - another school record. Pat also holds the best sophomore rec- ord for the two mile t10:24l and Paul Thompson holds the best freshmen time with 11:08. The accomplishments this season could go on and on, but the real payoff will come with the opening of next season. With eight returning lettermen lPat Marquis, Jay Thompson, Matt Jecker, Paul Thompson, Dave Austin, Mike Ragsdale, Frank Pinon, and Steve Reyesl and much untapped potential, hopes are high for Coach Riley and the team as they continue their Run to the Top. 56 in Y' 3 Y n n l , . fn 1' if , ' fyi , , ,- A. This short phrase pretty well sums up the feeling of my last five years at Saint Mary's, We have been the best, and we have lost big, we have celebrated victory and mourned defeat, but in the long run, it has been a very worth while experience for me. I am very grateful for the affiliations that I have experienced with the students, parents, and faculty of Saint Mary's High School over the last five years. But I am most elated about the wonderful associations I have exper- ienced with the athletes that I have coached here, From time to time, I have been asked, What has been your greatest thrill as a football coach? Trying to sin- gle this out would be very difficult for me to do, Coaching football here has been a thoroughly rewarding endeavor for me. I would also like to also especially thank the cafeteria staff, Sue, Jule, Irene, and the Sisters of Mercy, two groups of women who are dedicated to Catholic schools and need to be recognized as frequently as possible. For me to say good-bye, would be out of perspective, instead I would like to wish you people all the best of luck and thanks for everything. 5,3 Coach Cox R l.V. For the freshman, it is hard to believe that one day he will look back at his high school career and say, Boy, those were the gold, old days! For fifty-three graduates, however, the good, old days For the fresh man, it is hard to believe that one day he will look back at his high school career and say, Boy, those were the good, old days! For fifty-three graduates, however, the good, old days have arrived. For them, it is now the bygone era of high school classes, dances, football and basketball games, proms, candy sales, assemblies, pep rallies, plays, etc. All that is left of these activities are the memories. The graduate is in the unique position of having his entire adult life before him. It is an un- marked, untried record, and that too is unique. The graduate has the potential to become whatever he or she wants, to achieve as much as he or she can, and to share as much as he or she will. Perhaps, the good, old days are past, but it is the future that holds the excitement and the expectation of life. 14 I X X Q Xx 151 In Memory nf Renee Andrea Olah On October ll, 1973, Renee Olah died leaving behind a mem Y 'ti 41 1 I Xl fi WORLD, I AM YOUTH World, Iam Youth, unsettled and searching, Exploring the heights and the plain.
