Most Reverend Edward T. Hughes Bishop of the Diocese of Metuchen Bishop Hughes addresses the need for Catholic education. In a letter written on Sept. 3. 1987. The Most Reuerend Edward Hughes addressed the people of the Diocese of Metuchen in a letter published in the Monitor and distributed to schools through out the diocese. The following paragraphs are excerpts of impor lance to all Catholic families We are grateful to Bishop Hughes for this strong stand on Catholic Education and his support of Saint Mary Regional High School. Dear Friends in Christ, “The opening of another school year calls our attention once again to the critical importance of education — both for our young people and for all of us who constantly need to learn and grow. Education is a challenge, a responsibil- ity for us all. If learning is not our lifelong pursuit, then our lives are diminished and we are poorer. This time of year however, leads us to focus especially upon our schools and colleges, and upon the young peo- ple who will struggle there to grow in wisdom and knowl- edge. These young people, and the schools they attend, must be, in the deepest and most persona! way, our responsibility, our concern. A community has many obli- gations but none more pressing than its obligation to pro- vide for the education and development of its young people . . . It is my prayer that all of us in the Diocese of Metuchen — people, religious, priests and bishop — will truly dedi- cate ourselves to the religious education of our children. There is no greater expression of God’s faith in us than the fact that He commits His children to our care. Let us together pray for the grace to be faithful to His trust in us. Let us together teach our children the beauty of God's world and the beauty of His love for us.” On The Cover: The shield of Saint Mary Regional High is highly symbolic. The focal point of the shield is the cross, a symbol of our Christian Faith. The upper left shows a dove, significant of peace and wisdom. Peace, the goal of the young and wisdom, the tool with which he works. The right hand corner depicts a runner, representative of sports, a vital part of our human development. The book and pen in the lower left depicts the academic training we receive at Saint Mary Regional. In the lower right, a sceptre and scroll inscribed with the word ‘‘Virtus are symbolic of the virtues and standards which must be carried throughout life. 16
