s c E P T ’88 Rc L Volume XXVII Saint Mary Regional High School South Amboy, New Jersey 08879 i We knew so much would change with this year. New faces, new attitudes, new friendships to make. A new school promised to be the best. So many new journeys, new roads to take. Afraid of the changes and of the growth, the first day of school hastened our hearts. We saw the changes both good and bad: differences in attitudes, system and dress. We felt the spirit of the school building every day and in everyone. With every day that passed, we saw Saint Mary Regional High School reaching out to its students, guiding us toward a shining future. As students adapting to a new Diocesan environment in the school, we were not only offered more academically, but also more socially and spiritually. Looking around we encountered the new love, warmth, and friendship Saint Mary’s had instilled in us. When reflecting on the four most memorable years of our lives which we have spent at St. Mary’s, we will not shed a tear of sadness but one of joy as we remember our classmates “through the eyes of love.” Now that we must go our separate ways, and strive toward success, let us always look back fondly on our memories of the graduating Class of 1988! — Lorrin Burrows — Sandy Pyrih — Cynde McNerny t i tfiC' iu €etn£Ai of f tinJjjup fet tfeie- lie laugfttiA and ifiaAinfl of pOfMateb. 9k in ift Jut (jJtUr tfuujj Vit Pw t jmJi its mfimnq anil ii ----(Iflf'lCin 1988 3 Saint Mary Regional High School On Sunday, June 28,1987, a flourish of band music and the release of balloons into the bright sky marked the passing of one era and the beginning of another for St. Mary Regional High. A simple name change was not the only difference. Sis- ters of Saint Francis of the Martyr Saint George and the Sisters of Mercy com bined forces to help further education at the school. In addition, two outstand- ing young priests. Father Rob and Fa- ther Joe, helped to guide anxious new students spiritually. By the time senior year comes, students have grown and are ready to start a new life. Through classes, activi- ties. and friendships made, St. Mary’s students become “Everything they are. It is a long road from the beginning to when students walk out the door for the last time. It is the wish of everyone here at St. Mary that by using all that we have learned and experienced, we will be ready to go out in the world and become “Everything we want to be. 11 Future Chippendales ? Hughes Bishop of the Diocese of Metuchen Bishop Hughes addresses the need for Catholic education. In a letter written on Sept. 3. 1987. The Most Reuerend Edward Hughes addressed the people of the Diocese of Metuchen in a letter published in the Monitor and distributed to schools through out the diocese. The following paragraphs are excerpts of impor lance to all Catholic families We are grateful to Bishop Hughes for this strong stand on Catholic Education and his support of Saint Mary Regional High School. Dear Friends in Christ, “The opening of another school year calls our attention once again to the critical importance of education — both for our young people and for all of us who constantly need to learn and grow. Education is a challenge, a responsibil- ity for us all. If learning is not our lifelong pursuit, then our lives are diminished and we are poorer. This time of year however, leads us to focus especially upon our schools and colleges, and upon the young peo- ple who will struggle there to grow in wisdom and knowl- edge. These young people, and the schools they attend, must be, in the deepest and most persona! way, our responsibility, our concern. A community has many obli- gations but none more pressing than its obligation to pro- vide for the education and development of its young people . . . It is my prayer that all of us in the Diocese of Metuchen — people, religious, priests and bishop — will truly dedi- cate ourselves to the religious education of our children. There is no greater expression of God’s faith in us than the fact that He commits His children to our care. Let us together pray for the grace to be faithful to His trust in us. Let us together teach our children the beauty of God's world and the beauty of His love for us.” On The Cover: The shield of Saint Mary Regional High is highly symbolic. The focal point of the shield is the cross, a symbol of our Christian Faith. The upper left shows a dove, significant of peace and wisdom. Peace, the goal of the young and wisdom, the tool with which he works. The right hand corner depicts a runner, representative of sports, a vital part of our human development. The book and pen in the lower left depicts the academic training we receive at Saint Mary Regional. In the lower right, a sceptre and scroll inscribed with the word ‘‘Virtus are symbolic of the virtues and standards which must be carried throughout life. 16 flvoMnivw ffrffllfifFSr .T,ririYiYtTiT i-r,-rf n iT, WH '1 ’iriv« n v, v WfUWitP' iH¥I to 1 till 1 7 Metamorphosis Cheers'' “An Evening to Remember” On May 8, 1987, the miraculous metamorphosis of the St. Mary’s High School Cafeteria took place. Dull looking tables and dreary lights were transformed into bright sparkling areas of fun and excitement. The doors opened to golden arches of flowers that led the way to a helium balloon-filled dance floor. With Full Spectrum as the D.J. how could the evening be anything less than a success? Thanks to the support and hard work of President Gerri Panigrosso and the Sophomore Senate the evening truly became “an evening to remember.” “I’ve already played that song “A night to remember 18 Sophomore Semi-Formal “Welcome to my party Lucille. The Baccalaureate Mass marked the beginning of the activities for the Class of 1987. Wednesday evening, dressed in cap and gown the Class made its final procession down the isle of St. Mary’s Church. What marked the occa- sion as a more solemn one was the fact that now the school would no longer be a Parish High School. Hearts were heavy as the se- niors looked at their classmates for one of the , _ last times in their high school days. God Bless y.'i the Class of 1987. v Sister Margeret keeps her eyes on the crew. It is evident in the smiles of the parents that mom and dad have many things to be proud of in their graduates. It is always at an occasion such as this that through the eyes of love parents see their children grow and develop. Congratula- tions to all our St. Mary’s parents for a job well done. Moving Forward On Sunday, June 7, 1987, the Class of 1987 began its final walk down the aisle of St. Mary’s Gymnasium to the song pomp and circumstance. Not an eye in the audience was dry by the end of the program. Graduation is a beginning and all the students in the audience were well aware of the difficult road ahead. Although many are going forward to other academic institutions, many others will enter the working world within the next few months. St. Mary’s will no longer be a part of their daily routine however it is obvious by all the friendships that have been made over the past four years that the “Glory Days” of High School will long be remembered. The colors of the gowns only reflected the shining faces and brilliant smiles of all who attended this gala affair. Before the evening was over how- ever, there were many pairs of shoes lining the dance floor as well as tuxedo jackets that were removed to allow a breath of fresh air from all the energetic dancers. Even Tom White’s swollen ankle didn’t put a damper on the excitement of the evening. By evenings end, a bit tired and slightly wilted ev- eryone left for home to dream of the romance and happiness that made Prom Night 1987 one for all the seniors to truly remember. Strikes Again!! Mr. Ross' sideline enthusiasm and dedica- tion helped the Eagles retain their spirit throughout the season. Although losing many seniors, including pitching ace Frank Paczkowski, the ’88 Eagles will have five ex- perienced players re- turning to fill the gap — Pat Kiernan, Dave Nash, Matt Leahy, Tom Kovaleski, and Rich Maserik. With these players returning, 1988 could well be “The Year of the Ea- gle”. Awesome Baseball anyone? Frank, always with the perfect pitch. MEANER!!! Although the film cast consists of profession- al actors, the students will be seen in the back- ground of the film, scenes of which were shot in the foyer of St. Mary’s Elementary School on Augusta Street. “This seems like the best foyer in a school we could get into,’’ said Joan Vail Thorne as she surveyed the entrance. Thorne is the au- thor of “Not Me! a play about students who use crack, a relatively new and powerful de- rivative of cocaine. Thorne also is a member of Plays for Living, a Manhattan-based, nonprofit organization that has been writing and producing plays on social issues since 1959. Working in conjunction with the J.C. Penney Co., the theater company is making Thorne’s play into a video. It was because of J.C. Penney that St. Mary’s school was selected as the site for the filming. Peggy Slatter of East Brunswick, a member of J.C. Penney’s production department, said the company asked a number of schools, in- cluded her own alma mater. East Brunswick High School, for permission to film, but most school officials either denied the request or said time would be needed to get proper approval. Another J.C. Penney employee suggested his alma mater. St. Mary's, according to John Gloss, principal of the school. Gloss said he was contacted last week and after reviewing the script with others from the school administration, gave permission for the filming. The production team requested students to serve as movie extras, and forms were distrib- uted to obtain parental permission. About 35 students, including the girls’ basketball team, volunteered for the film shooting, Gloss said. While some scenes weie filmed yesterday in St Mary’s, other scenes were to be shot today in the gymnasium of Immaculate Conception School in Spotswood because St. Mary’s school gymnasium was being repaired. Students appearing in the movie admitted they were first attracted by the excitement of a film production. For some of the students, how- ever, the glamour of the bright lights became secondary to the message of the movie. “We want to get involved in the anti-drug campaign, said Lucille Stoney of Matawan. “We want kids to know that kids care, too. It’s not just adults saying this about drugs, Gerri Panigrosso of Perth Amboy added. “This (drug abuse) could happen to any one of us Thorne said her play tells the story of a girl who has just transferred to a new school, tries to make friends and discovers many of her new friends use crack. Richard Cohrane, creative director for J.C. Penney, said the 30-minute video is the first to be made for the Golden Rule Network, a broadcasting division within the company. Coh- rane said Penney plans to broadcast the film from its New York studio to communities across the country as part of a public relations cam- paign. Plays for Living develops productions in- tended to initiate discussions. With each pro- duction, the theater company writes a detailed discussion guide. Cohrane said before presenting the film in one of Penney’s stores or corporate buildings, the company would invite educators, students and authorities in communities receiving the broadcast to participate in a discussion panel on the night of the show. Other scenes for the movie were filmed ear- lier outside a Ridgewood school and at a house in Orangeburg, N Y. The production crew is scheduled to complete its 10 days of filming tomorrow. Medieval Festival “Welcome to Court” On Thursday, December 17, 1987, the Freshman Class held their annual Medieval Festival. Under the direction of History teachers, Mr. Malhame and Mr. Gloss, the festival was a huge success. Most of the Fresh- men class participated in this annual event. Kevin Zebro was the Master of Ceremonies, and Bobby Russo and Michele La Muro were the Lord and Lady of the Manor. The Festival began at 11 A M., and took place in the Little Theater and St Patricks Hall. During the after- noon the freshmen put on many skits and plays to demon- strate Medieval customs, fashions, and games such as the Kissing Bush, Monkey in the Middle, and Blind Man’s Bluff. The Class of ‘91 were also greeted by members of the Middle Ages. They included the knight, the priest, the male and female serf, and many more. The character the freshmen enjoyed the most was the Christmas Spirit played by Carolyn Cusniak. Her bright green outfit and jolly attitude brought many laughs and smiles. This year, Sceptre ’88 was no exception. Under the watchful eye of moderator, Mrs. Diana Panigrosso, the staff worked on lay-outs, photo copy, typing, copy sheets.and art work. Editor, Colleen Graham, Assistant Editor Cynde McNerny, Beth Flem- ing, Gina Catallo, Carolyn Rossetti, and pho- tographer Lorrin Burrows, comprised the Se- nior workers and Gerri Panigrosso and Dee Panigrosso were the underclass Staff. St. Mary’s Eagle is a paper that will be issued six times a year, October, November, December, March, April and May. Feature items include “The Chap- lain’s Corner”, “Guide Posts”, “Sports”, The Principal’s Desk” and a strong editorial section with positive and negative issues of con- cern to students. Seeing the faces of the first class to witness the changes of St. Mary Regional already in effect proved to be interesting. New teach- ers, new friends, and new directions greet- ed the freshmen on their first day of school, and helped them feel more relaxed and confident in their high school environ- ment. Under the leadership of its’ senior players, Kris Sariski, Deb Zielinski, and Tara Dowd the team thrived. Also for the second year, Tara Dowd and Kathy O’Toole proved to be a successful double combination. With a group of very talented underclass- men, next year looks great for Coach Feld- man and the Girl’s Tennis Team. Equipped For The Day' Senior Stars Debbie Zielinski mmgz BUS Kristen Sariski Tara Dowd 122 The 1987 Girls Tennis Team V_______J 123 The 1987 boy’s soccer team did remarkably well considering the loss of a number of seniors from last year’s squad, with a final record of 5 12. The Eagles were led by freshman sensa- tion Paul Cordiero, who began the season as a fullback and was given the chance to show his hidden talents as a forward by taking on the chore of being the team’s main offensive threat. Scott Hurley Chris Sullivan were the second and third high scorers. The return of the Iron Curtain defense helped the Eagles hold on to many a close game. Thanks should not go unexpressed to these fine athletes. Another group of players that the team cannot forget is the seniors, who by their leadership and desire to win, gave St. Mary’s a fine season. Although the seniors will be missed, the team looks forward to growth from the amount of experience they received this year. Soccer '88 will prove to be a year “headed” in the right direction. “Big Kicks Coach Chris and the Boy's Soccer Team. Pre game strategy. Let the game begin. Tweet “heading the ball” in the right direction. Dave on his way to scoring another goal. Rob and Tony use just a little body to get to the ball. 124 Soccer Mania United by spirit. Aliue kickin' 5 brings the Eagles closer to another victory. The Eagles are supported by their many loyal fans. Senior goalie Paul Roche stops the attempt. Soccer ball + loafers + argyles = Coach Chris. 125 Girls Soccer The Girl's Soccer Team. ROSS, the BOSS! One team on the rise here at St Mary Regional High is the Girl’s Soccer Team. Though the team does not have an out- standing record, they gave it their best shot. This year the team has been looking good and is full of determination. If hard work usually pays off, this team should have no problem at all next season One win that did not go unnoticed however, was the game against Hoffman. The team was in excellent form and went on to demolish Hoffman at the score of 4-2. Keep up the good work Eagles! Judy gives it a boot. “When Jeanine talks, people listen??? 126 Giving Their Best Shot. “Brute Consiglio takes charge! We re ready! “Leeann finally uses her head. Where did it go Tina, alone in the spotlight. 127 “A Winning Season” And they're off!!! I think I can, I think I can, I think I can Stretch it out! Tony Guido, John Oberhuber 128 Cross Country Runners “The boy’s cross-country team, under the guidance of Mr. Ed Two- mey, had their first winning season in eight years. The Eagle’s record was 7 wins and 6 loses. The Eagles had many impressive wins. One victory that stands above the rest is against our cross-country rivals, Bishop Ahr. The 1988 Eagles are only losing senior captain Dave Nash, due to graduation, so they should easily improve on the 1987 record for an impressive season next year.” “A little thirsty?” “This is ridiculous! 129 Saint Mary Boys Varsity Basketball The Boys’ Varsity Basketball team struggled through the 1987-88 season, The Eagles were guided by first year head coach Jerry Bruno, who never suffered with a losing season before this year. The Eagles’ scoring was done by senior captains Mark Tinitigan, Dave Nash, and Pat Kiernan and also Junior forward Billy Wykpisz, who was among the county leaders in three point goals. The remainder of the Eagles roster was filled by senior Tony Kous, juniors Chris Sul- livan, Bobby Ferraro, Dave Nier- atko, Joe McGuire, Tom Kovaleski, Keith Lodzinski, sophomore Pat Kennedy and freshman Danny Blaha. The 88-89 Eagles will look to im- prove on this seasons record with 8 experienced players returning next season. The Lady Ea- gles under the leadership oi new coach Tony Bozzella, are headed towards another successful year. Last year the girls made it to the states and it looks like they will be returning again. With strong play by Seniors Jen Noble and Michele Mancuso the team looks tough. Juniors Judy Paczkowski and Jenine Barella, with the help of a strong underclassmen team, can bet that the Lady Eagles will be successful in the coming years and continue to bring pride to our school. The 1987 1988 Varsity Basketball Team Jen Noble leads the Eagles to another victory. 132 Last minute game plans. EAGLES SOARING HIGH Dedicated Eagle fans look on Coach Bozella sets the play.
