It is a magical aura which not only touches our lives but also affects our spirit. It may be the rainbows diverse spectrum of colors that accomplishes this, but it is to a greater extent the various ideas and emotions that they represent. s Freshmen of St. Mary's we entered a whole new and exciting world. Still young and naive in our ways, we had the cour- age to accept a new challenge in our life. This bold leap, best symbolized as the red band in the rainbow, was the little nudge necessary to start us toward our goal. 3n time, our friendships extended be- yond the limits of elementary school. We now knew no bounds. Greeted by warm, bright, sunny faces, like the yellow stripe in the rainbow, we opened ourselves to new relation- ships. ever losing sight of that pot of gold, that achievement, or success we most desire in life, we continued our education at St. Mary's. This is best represented by the green band in the rainbow signifing the growth and learning both spiritually and mentally institut- ed by our teachers. vTr he many long hours that were spent by Vi'' our teachers over the past four years has payed off ultimately in our graduation. Or- ange, a symbol of stamina and endurance, has been shown by each of us in our completion of high school. The reward given to us for all of our energies is our diploma. aking our hard days easier and our sad days happier was a rule followed by both teachers and students of the class of 1987. Blue, another stripe in the rainbow stands for the times of sorrow and grief shared among all of us. Helping each other through the bad times exemplifies the togetherness of our class. The tough times are what has given our class the closeness it has and its spirit. (2| s our rainbow has been completed so have our years at St. Mary's. Whatever path in life we choose, we have the experience and qualifications needed to make it on our own. How ever we decide to reach our pot of gold, we know that St. Mary's has guided us and provided us with a firm foundation for doing so. emembering the happy as well as the sad times at St. Mary's are memories we should hold precious forever. These are spe- cial moments that should remain deep in our hearts. 1ft ears have past, but our storm has final- es ly broken. A rainbow now shines clear- ly with our pot of gold shimmering at the end. No matter how far away or how close our goal is one thing we have all learned at St. Mary's is that we should neve stop reaching for the top. Even if things seem dismal at times, just re- member that there is always A Rainbow Over The Horizon . The Administration President Paul Mazzella and Ken Murphy confer with Sr. Margaret. Dear Seniors, High School graduation is one of the highlights of your life. This year you join with the whole country in celebrating another great event that has had a great influence, though indirectly, on your lives, the three hundredth anniversary of the signing of the Constitution of the United States. The Constitution took a long time to write. It went through many revisions. The people who worked on it fought, argued, and compromised until the document was finally acceptable. Today, the Constitution is still being interpreted and am- mended to meet the needs of the times. The Constitution is a masterpiece of law unparallel in the history of man. So too with your lives, you must make choices, you will have to make decisions, you will need to compromise. Never compromise your principles. Principles are the bedrock of your character. Learn to listen to what another is saying before you make a decision. Use your good religious training to help you make correct moral decisions. Treat all people as you would like to be treated yourself, there in lies happiness. Life will have its joys and sorrows, its pleasures and its pains. Sometimes life will be an uphill struggle or a downhill slide but always you can use these wants to make you better people. Your life is your masterpiece, make it magnificent. May God be with you always. w 7 77 Sister Margaret The Eagle's Den Miss Baluk and friends Sr. Margaret, Ready for the day Taking time out for a break Shapers Of The Rainbow Kevin takes his daily shot. A Connecting Of Spirits Each day from 8:18 to 2:07 students of St. Mary's sit in class, answer questions, par- ticipate in discussions, walk through the halls, climb stairs, and rummage through lockers in their daily routine in a quest for higher learning. Throughout all the physical activity something special takes place. Some say educa- tion is the meeting of the minds but St. Mary's might also say it is a connecting of the Spirits. Students and faculty alike become one spectacular group working hard to learn and to grow. It is this spirit of love and caring that makes educa- tion at St. Mary's truly A Rainbow Connection'' Rainbow Dawn, open that book1. Dave Frey demonstrates the Killer Clutch That face, that face. Dan, get out of the way! Must we part? A Rainbow Of Color The colors of the clothes worn by St. Mary's students exude the colors of the spectrum and some might say they are more brilliant and breathtaking than those of an actual rainbow. The best part about the rain- bow of colors at St. Marys is that you don't have to wait until after a storm to see them. A simple stroll down the hall will reveal a rainbow of people whose per- sonalities are as colorful as their clothes. The moods and person- alities at St. Marys color our world. All smiles! r Fun In The Sun This is Grrr .... eat!! A Time To Remember May was a busy month for Seniors, but we gladly took time out for a trip to Florida. On May 8th we caught a flight out of Newark Airport and even though it was only a four day trip, some of us had enough clothes to last for a month. We visited Mickey Mouse and everyone bought souveniers, from mouse ears to outrageous clothes worn by two guys we won't name. There was a day at Wet'n'Wild and some of us came back looking like lobsters while others looked like they never saw the Florida sun! Who could forget the Medival Times Dinner Show with the paper crowns and eating without knives and forks. The show was great and of course our knight won. When we look back, now we can laugh at the roaches that visited some of the hotel rooms at night and breakfast at the hotel (yuck). We still had a great time and it was a trip that no one will forget. How soon do we get there? Sean's new girl! OK. What do we do next! Yes ! With players like Mike Dietrich, Frank Paczkowski, Dave Nash and Sean Pelletiere. 1987 looks like a banner year. 21 Senior Parent Dinner Dance Moving On May 30, the last day of Senior Week, included the Senior Parent Dinner Dance. For many of us this was the last time we danced with our parents before closing the chapter on our High School years and moving on to bigger and better things. During a buffet style dinner with music provided by D.J. Bill Hurd, Moms danced with their sons and daddies danced with their little girls. After danc- ing we moved to the little theater for our slide show. We shared laughter and a few tears as we looked back at the four years that flew by so quickly. St. Mary's will always remain in our minds and our hearts. Kim and Keri, Dancing in the Dark Tom loaned me his mom for this picture. Mom's little boys aren't so little anymore. One of the most exciting happenings at St. Mary's this year was hosting The Battle of the Bands . Heavy Metal groups competed for the top prize while students and friends from all over the area flocked to hear their favorite group. Many St. Mary's fans were hard to find, out of dress code, and looking rather different in their Strange attire. Spending the night together . At The Hilton The Senior Prom was a special occasion. It not only gave us memories of our last and final year at St. Mary's, but it also filled us with rememberances that will last a lifetime. The Prom took place on May 23 at the elegant Woodbridge Hilton. Many sophisticated seniors arrived in limousines and appeared in flowing prom gowns and sharp looking tuxedos. The romantic music and elegant archway of balloons allowed the happy couples to dance the night away to their theme song Through the Years . Bob, looking stary eyed! It's a time to reflect on the past four years and a time to look forward to the future. Our Baccalaureate Mass was held on May 28 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Mary's Church with our pastor and celebrant Msgr. Gerety. Many students participated in the mass bringing up gifts such as a Varsity letter. Class Ring, and a textbook. We also had many fine readers at the mass and our faithful guitar group which gave it their all. We should never forget the song The Greatest Love of All that filled us with a sense of dignity to love and to succeed. The Class of X986 Maryann and Kelly, one final duet. Bob gets his ironing done just in time. A few adjustments and we're off. 28 V----------------- Our Final Day Emotions Our last few days at St. Mary's gave us mixed feelings of both hap- piness and sadness. Happiness in finally graduating and leaving school but a certain sadness in leaving behind many friendships made with both teachers and fellow classmates and having to face an unpredictable future. Four years spent together built up a lot of memories, and the events that oc- cured have changed our lives. As we step out of the past and reach for tomorrow, we, the Class of '86 will never forget the times we spent at St. Mary's High School. How could you forget these guys. The Three Musketeers, Eileen, Lisa, and Beth. Oh, Rich my darling! Ed, you shouldn't have. 1986 Seniors, a terrific bunch of kids. Now, what should 1 write to you7 Nancy and Mary Ellen, a friendship that keeps blooming. 29 Glory Days Come To An End Away We Go! The final walk. Graduation day, June 6, 1986, was filled with joy and tears. There was joy for the successful completion of four years at Saint Mary's and tears for the end of those Glo- ry Days . Although it is being presented in this manner that is not to say we do not take the faculty seriously., At St. Mary's the faculty and administration are really the “stars of the school. They have been educators, friends, and family to the students. The personal relationship which is achieved between teacher and student is one of the things students are fondest of. While each teacher may have his or her own unique style of educat- ing, one thing is common to them all . . . caring. When the world seems cold and unresponsive one can walk through St. Mary's door and know that there are people who will listen and help. Which one should I choose? )rientation The class of 1990 entered St. Mary's on Freshmen Orientation Day scared, uncomfort- able, and disoriented. There were so many un- familiar faces and so many new challenges. After a tour of the school and a hot dog lunch outside many felt more at ease. Now that the freshmen's first day butterflies are gone, it is easy to forget just how nervous that first day made them feel. But we should not forget times like these. These are the days to hold on to and the times that we should look back upon with warm hearts and fond memories. It is times like these that force us to grow and realize that each new experience begins a new rainbow in our lives. Meet The Class Of 1990 “1990 Not Too Far Away The freshmen class of 1990 is a highly motivated, diverse group of students. Their different backgrounds, beliefs, and talents are special by themselves, but combined with the unity of the class they become extraordinary. Their enthusi- asm seems limitless, and the extra effort that they put forth to dig their feet into St. Mary's can only be admired. The freshmen's energy and friendliness illuminates ev- eryone that they come in contact with. For many, it is a time to put away bicycles for faster and more powerful toys. Once again, this year's National Honor Society has managed to demonstrate the four basic quali- ties of scholarship, leadership, character, and service. Under the guidance of moderator Mrs. Potth- off, members have become deeply involved in food drives and collec- tions directed at helping the needy in nearby towns. Aside from this special project, the society has also run a tutorial service during lunch periods to provide assistance for those encountering academic prob- lems. Half Down - Half To Go During the week of Januray 12th through the 16th the Seniors at St. Marys had their Half Way Week Celebration. Their activi- ties consisted of A Student Teacher Appreciation Day which took place on Monday, a Topics Class trip to Middlesex Court House on Wednesday, a pizza party on Thursday, and a mass and breakfast followed by a Family Feud assembly on Friday. Mondays' Appreciation Day consisted of bagels, donuts, and various hot and cold beverages. This took place in the library where there were also games and a Sheet Signing Ceremony. The Senior Sheet was to be signed by every senior so that they will always be remembered. On Wednesday Mr. Malhame's class went to Middlesex Court- house to witness a real trial. The trial was involving a man charged with possession of a dangerous substance. Afterwards the class enjoyed a lunch at McDonalds. Thursday the Seniors enjoyed their lunch at St. Patricks Hall. They had a pizza party luncheon which lasted until all of the pizza was finished. Friday the Seniors had a mass which was followed by a break- fast of donuts and bagels. The last annual Family Feud Assembly was held later that afternoon to bring to a close a week long Senior celebration. Down and Out in the St. Mary's Library. As the Class of 1987 approaches the final days in St. Mary's, we look back to the past four years and the many good and bad times. One person who has always been beside us through our daily ups and downs is Mr. John Gloss. Mr. Gloss has taken on many roles with our class over the years and he has handled each one with his special characteristics of love and caring. Through his unique style of teaching he has proved that learning can be fun and stimulating. As a moderator, Mr Gloss has been equally dedi- cated. The Class of 1987's unparalleled success and the unity of its' senate is due greatly to his efforts. Perhaps the role that Mr. Gloss is best at is that of a truly great friend. Although John Gloss is a very busy man, he is never too busy to listen, help, and care. Whether it be college applications, disciplin- ary injustices, or personal catastrophe, he has al- ways been there to let us know that we are not alone. Mr. Gloss has earned our love and respect. The Class of 1987 are honored to dedicate this book to him and we would like to thank him for being such a warm and important part of our lives. 94 Mr. Gloss and the Senior Senate; unified through friendship. H 3 T CO a, ,2i £ c op C -P C 1 0 i Q Freshmen Year It's September 7, 1983 and the class of 1987 is about to begin its four year journey through St. Mary's High School. A loud bell rings as 197 ner- vous freshmen await their orientation. The day passed by, as did many after, and our class became more and more familiar with it's surroundings. The Fall Ball arrived and intro- duced us to the social aspects of high school. Our first retreat experience was in the St. Mary's Gym. Getting to know each other and to share the spirit of the day gave everyone a new feeling. The Valentine's Day Ball marked the first event sponsored by the Class of 87 and its success set the tone for many events that would follow. Freshmen Spirit Week arrived at the end of February, and the crowds thrilled to the first ever Family Feud Assembly, won by the Senior class. Our freshmen basketball team was the highlight of the winter, with a very impressive 11 win and 1 loss season. Our Frosh year passed quickly and before we knew it, it was May and suds were running down our bodies at the Freshmen Class Car Wash. The Last Chance Dance capped off a year of new experiences, new places, and new friends. Freshmen year saw the departure of the following teachers: Mrs. Rossetti Gym Mr. Morvay Religion Sr. Grata Math Sophomore Year With our first summer as high school students past, it was back to the ususal routine, but this time there was a difference ... no more harass- ment, no more initiations, no more lowly freshmen status. We were the sophomores, the wise fools. The Annual Fall Ball started us off. and by the time the first quarter had ended, we had well established our- selves as third in command. The Computer Match-Ups came out just in time for Valentine's Day, and all enjoyed a good laugh, while the class treasury flourished. Sophomore Spirit Week rolled around and once again the Family Feud was a heart stopper. This time around it was won by the Senior class. The next event which took place will be remembered for a long time to come, both by those who attended and by the chaperones who braved it. The first Battle of the Bands at St. Mary's was a huge success, and bands ike Predator and Syntax cranked out serious rock n roll. With the Battle past we were well ready for our next religious ex- perience, and the whole we found at Lebanon on sophomore retreat was just the ticket. Soon after that holy experience we were all in Heaven at our Sopho- more Semi-Formal. The Last Chance Dance sent our second year at St. Mary's to an excit- ing end. Sophomore year was the last for a large number of teachers: Miss Feldman Gym Mrs. Turk English Mr. Phillips Science Mrs. Bucher French Mr. Coyle Guidance Miss Csurbak Theology Mr. Yusko History Mr. Duh Science Joe Z ? Junior Year After another summer off, it was again difficult returning. However, by the time the Fall Ball made it's usual appearance in late September, we had all settled into our junior year. Ring Day soon arrived, and the Class of '87 enjoyed a day of ceremo- nies and excitement. In early November Junior Spirit Week arrived, and once again the Family Feud brought down the house. This time the title belonged to the Junior class. The Lakeside Manor was the next gala event, as the Junior Class Christ- mas Ball was enjoyed by all who attended. Also, during that winter season was the ski trip to Vernon Valley, another unforgetable adventure. Our Junior Retreat was the next step in our retreat program, and our experiences in Kirkrige or Aldersgate were indeed memorable and fun. Soon after, everything smelt like roses, partially due to Friendship Day '86, when the junior senate attempted to deliver hundreds of roses to the entire school. Not to be outdone by our sopho- more effort, the Battle of the Bands held junior year was an even more spectacular affair. Exceptionally tal- Mr. Gloss. Moderator Paul Mazzella, Pres. Debbie Vellanti Kevin Byrne cJUNIGRS ented bands like Raise, and returning champion Syntax were outdone only by the heavy metal mastery of Mor- bid Sin. Junior year was brought to a close, as had the two previous years, by the Last Chance Dance. At the end of our junior we had to say goodbye to the following: Urbanski Gym Mr. Galis Spanish Mr. Palitto Gym Miss Wil- lence Science Mr. Russo Gym Mrs. Mantz History Dr. Mathis Theology Mrs. Hancik Library Mrs. Bauer English Mr. Pang- borne English Senior Year Our last year at St. Mary's began in the ususal fashion, and once again we had moved up in position. This time we were at the top, we were the MIGHTY MIGHTY Seniors! The Fall Ball began the festivities of senior year, and our last was per- haps our best. The Senior Faculty Picnic provid- ed an excellent way to get back in touch with our classmates and teach- ers. A nice day at Cheesequake Park was enjoyed by everyone. Our final retreat experience was by far the best, and the closeness we achieved is something we all hope we can keep for a long time. When Christmas time arrived the senior class gathered in the cafeteria to celebrate. DJ John provided enter- tainment, and Santa arrived with a lap to sit on and presents for a few lucky seniors. With our last year halfway gone it was time for Senior Half-way Week. Various activities, like Senior Lun- cheon, Breakfast, and Teacher Appre- ciation Day made for a fun-filled week of senior activities. The Family Feud. Final Chapter, played its usual role, and once again the seniors dominated. Florida was the sight of the senior class' next adventure. Our trip to Disney World, Epcot, and Wet 'n Wild was an exciting and highly en- joyable week. The Senior Prom began our Gradu- ation Season. The Prom, Graduation, and the activities which went along with them highlighted our final year at St. Mary's, and brought our high school time to a close. REMEMBER THE CLASS OF 1987! 130 The Newstribune, Woodbridge, N.J. - Fri., Oct. 17, 1986 - ' Taking it to the streets The unbeaten St. Mary's High School girls cross country team limber up on the streets of South Amboy yesterday. From left to right are Colleen McCarthy. Jennifer Noble, Ann Zaleski. Dawn McCabe, Michelle Gerrity, Dawn Castellano and Shannon O'Connor. St. Mary's Girls X-C Team: Surprise, Surprise, Surprise By JOHN HALEY News Tribune sports writer SOUTH AMBOY - Surprise, sur- prise, surprise! Gomer Pyle certainly summed up the plight of the St. Mary's High School girls cross country team best when he made that phrase famous. Before the season began, couch Ed Twomey had a talented runner re- turning in senior Colleen McCarthy. That was about it. But little by little, things happened: • Juniors Jennifer Noble and Mi- chelle Gerrity, who had to sit out last year with injuries, returned. In top form, we might add. • Ann Zaleski (no relations to for- mer St. Mary's star Virginia Zaleski) came out of the blue and is in the process of setting the freshman school record. • McCarthy, who had worked hard over the summer training, shaved al- most five minutes off her time. • Add to that the fact that the school does not field any track teams. and one must take notice of the Ea- gles' 1986 exploits — a 6-0 record and an inevitable clinching of the Blue Division of the Greater Middlesex Conference. It's a complete surprise to me, said Twomey. in his third year as head coach. I wasn't sure if Noble and Gerrity were even coming back. And to have them come back like they have has really helped. And I never heard of Ann Zaleski before. She's come out of the blue and and has just been fantastic. Basically, before the season start- ed, I thought I would have two good runners, Twomey added. Now I have five. And we have a nice mix. Of our top runners, we have a senior, a junior, a sophomore and a freshman. The top gun is McCarthy. It's tough at our school with no track programs because once cross country stops, the girls go on to other sports and the conditioning is not the same, explained Twomey. But Col- leen just worked, worked and worked on her running. She broke 20 min- utes in her last two races at Roosevelt Park (19:29, on Wednesday). She's ac- tually bettered her time about five minutes. And she really provides leadership to the team. She's even starting to get feelers from some college. Noble, a junior, has taken over the No. 2 spot. Her times have been com- ing down rapidly, while Zaleski, the No. 3 runner, is just 10 seconds away from breaking the freshman record of 21:40. Dawn McCabe, last year's Rookie of the Year is back as a sophomore while the improving Gerrity (a ju- nior) rounds out the top five. Juniors Shannon O'Connor and Dawn Castellano have run off and on due to injuries, but are expected to add depth for the big meets down the stretch of the season. We've had a lot of fun this season; they're a great bunch of girls, said Twomey. We beat Hoffman, which has been the highlight of the season. Hoffman has dominated our league the last three years, and although they're not as strong this season, they're still competitive because Reg- gie Carney does a great job. We beat them be three points, and it was such a big win. I think that pretty much wrapped up the division. he added. We have three more teams left, but I don't even think they have full teams. Bishop Ahr is 7-0 and I called their school to schedule a meet. 1 think they'll agree. That should be a great match. As for the Middlesex County meet, which will take place on Halloween, Twomey is optimistic. We can't compete with the Madi- son Centrals, but I'd like to shoot for the top six, Twomey said. I think that would be just great. Twomey concluded by saying, 1 think the program here really looks bright for the future. Shazam! 132 We Did It!!! The Girl's Cross Country Team under the direction of coach Ed Twomey was undefeated in the Blue Division of Greater Middlesex Conference Cross Country Teams. Colleen McCarthy, Ann Zaleski, and Jennifer Noble were named to the Girl's 1st team Blue Division. CONGRATULATIONS! Runners? The face of determination. 7th Inning Stretch Simon says, Put your hands on your shoulders. The Girl's Cross Country Team 133 Boy's Cross Country Run Like The Wind St. Mary's has reason to be proud for many of its' teams and their accomplishments. One team in which it is especially proud of is the Boy's Cross Country Team. Their dedication and strong spirit is dis- played on the team as well as off. Although a teams success depends on everyones effort, there is one member whose athletic ability clearly sparkles. This athlete is Senior Kevin Byrne. Kevin Byrne is truly what is the epitome of giving 100%. Kevin was named to the Boys 1st team. Blue Divi- sion of Greater Middlesex Confer- ence Cross Coun- try team for the second year in a row. This is an outstanding achievement but nothing is a sur- prise coming from such a great group of athletes and Mr. Twomey's hard work as coach. Kevin and Michelle warming up. It can't get any better. Determination! A Winning Coach Although the Girl's Soccer Team had a difficult season for wins their spirit ran high. Much of the enthusiasm fos- tered by Coach Ross gave the girls their sweetest win against Hoffman. Tisha Lof- tus once again high scorer at times appeared to be the whole offense. Keep an eye on Lee Ann Durski in the fall. Girl's Soccer Girl's Soccer Team. Tennis Anyone? Tara . . . Tara . . . Tara . . . Tara We slick together. Oops, wait a minute. The Tennis Team. Catch The Spirit The Tennis Team for 1986 was under the direction of Coach Correll who brought new enthusiasm and life to the game. Mr. Correll has been very involved in the sports program this year and is indeed responsible for students desiring to participate in creating winning teams. St. Mary's has a winner in Coach Correll. 137 Winners” The Boy's Soccer Team was united in spirit as well as in enthusiasm to a sport in which they dedicated their hearts and minds. Al- though their record did not justify their efforts the team never gave up. Their determination to try their best outshined their losses. They remained dedicated and stood their ground proudly. This is a fine ex- ample of good sportsman- ship and school spirit. 'Take me out to the basketball game Mark, ten feet off the ground. Nick has the magic touch. Untouchable Dave” The foul shot King' Center Court Working Together The Girls Varsity Basketball Team The Girls Basketball Team had a very good season. The well balanced team was led by Jennifer Noble who averaged an amazinvg twelve points a game. Although the efforts of the team as a whole accounted for their success, June O'Leary especially stood out as a strong player and was first in rebounding. The team qualified for the Counties as well asd the States. The players morale was boosted by the Eagles Cheerleaders. Cheerleading is more than just a sport. It is the heart of every basketball game. This past year the cheerleaders have made a great effort to arouse the spirit throughout the entire game. Using all of their energy, cheers, and routines, the cheerleaders made the crowd more interested and the team more aggresive. They have savored the past year and they hope that their spirit will live on forever. Go! Fight! Win! fXMty AGL The Girls Junior Varsity Basketball Team The success of The Junior Varsity Bas- ketball Team was due to great team skill and the help from The Junior Varsity Cheerleaders. The Girl's J.V. Team alone was finely tuned this year, but when joined with the energetic cheerleaders, they were awesome. The combination provided an ex- citing game that was full of surprises and power. At times it seemed the cheers gave the team a real winning edge. Their efforts reflected the cheerleaders hard work and spirit. Thanks to the Junior Varsity Basket- ball Team and Cheerleaders the Eagles fans had a great year. Cheer-i-os Ouch! The team was lead by first year coach, Dave Correll. The team had a great desire to win thanks to the hard work from the coach and the support of the school. Miss Ba- luk, a ten and a half year veteran of St. Mary's, left to pursue other career goals. During her time in the high school, six years were spent as a German and English teacher, and the last four and a half as vice principal. Being vice principal of a high school is not an easy job. Miss Baluk always attempted to be fair, enforcing rules equally for all. She was a woman dedicated to her job and the preservation of the high school's reputation. Known by all for her intense interest in the dress code, many never realized the deep concern she had for us, the students of St. Mary's. Hopefully when we reminisce about the years Miss Baluk spent with us we will truly appreciate what she has done, and realize that the rules and codes were meant to strengthen us, not weaken us. It is with great sadness that we the students of St. Mary's bid a fond farewell to a very special friend. Miss Baluk we wish you well! God Bless You.
