TABLE OF CONTENTS SENIORS ADMINISTRATION DEDICATION When we reflect upon our four years of learning, growing, and sharing here at Saint Mary's, we must also look back at those things which influenced us most and those things that have left lasting impressions embossed on our hearts and minds. There are too many temporary things, and too many fleeting moments in life. People, as well as events, have come and gone so quickly that we haven't truly had time enough to think about them. But the roads we will choose to follow from this day forward have been molded, partly, by one person who has shown us that she does care, a person we can call a friend. It is she. to whom we owe our thanks. For she has shown us that in this boundless universe, there is space and time enough for love and un- derstanding. She has given of herself to each of us in our time of need, never thinking twice about her own needs. She has SHOWN US understanding and patience; GIVEN US consolation, encouragement, and kind words; and she has BEEN an unfailing source of inspiration. So it is this, the expression of ourselves, which we now dedicate to you, MRS. SCORDINSKY. as a mere token of our deepest appreciation. We will be forever grateful for your continuous confidence in us. and simply, for you! 3 Robert Arrington Hulk “Felix, I want that bag! FRESHMAN YEAR We arrived at Saint Mary’s in September 1977 on Orientation Day eagerly looking forward to four years of _ .enriching education, sports, social events; and of course, a great Senior Class Trip. The first real event of the year was the 50 s dance. It was actually an initiation dance. In fact, the first few weeks were pretty tough with initiation, particularly from the Nemos. During the first few weeks of meeting our classmates we began making friends, enemies, and lovers (incidentally, no romances have survived all four years). A few months later, the class elec- tions were held. Tom O'Leary was decisively elected class president. With Mrs. Pelligrini (you all remember her) as class moderator, many exciting events were planned, but very few were held. We did have our first retreat ex- perience involving a long, tiring, sojourn all the way to St. Patrick’s Hall and even to the convent across the street. The class trip to Downingtown, PA was one of the highlights of the year. In fact, the trip was such a success, our anticipation for the Senior class trip grew immensely. All in all, most people would agree it was a year. SOPHOMORE YEAR The high point (or should I say low point) of Sophomore year was the ill-fated class picnic at Thompson Park in Jamesburg. It was there that one of our own classmates, who shall remain anonymous, ostracized herself from the class .by “naming oiit” on us for some illegal consumption. The entire event was a debacle. It was also the year Mr. “Stan the Man Pazden, serving the last term of his sentence, took us on a field trip to the Bronx Zoo. Although the weather was inclement, the class enjoyed and was particularly impressed by the wildlife- that is native to Florida. On the social scene, there was the usual assortment of Friday night dances, hootenannys, gong shows, etc., all topped off by the Spring Semi-Formal. This was also the last year for the immensely popular Halloween Happen- ing. This grand old event was cancelled for safety reasons. We didn’t have a class trip this year but it really didn't matter because we were really looking forward to our Senior trip to Florida and were willing to sacrifice this one. JUNIOR YEAR September 5, 1979 dawned brightly in a golden display of what seemed to be Florida sunshine. We walked into St. Mary's as upper classmen, fully prepared to help the new freshmen enjoy their initiation day. The school was so hot that it felt like a melting pot. On the sports scene, the Eagle teams were at their best. The football team enjoyed its third straight undefeated season as they shut out Hoffman, 18-0. The backbone of the team was its awesome interior line, which consisted of Seve Servis, Bernie Orszewski, John Inman, Tom O’Leary, John McLaughlin and Tom McCarthy. The big, bad, bouncin' basketball team had its finest season ever. Led by juniors Kevin McDonnell, Tom Murray, Ken Connor, and Ed Stevens, as well as Bernie Orszewski, Tom Misak, Brian Gorczynski, and John In- man, the Eagles soared to another Central Valley Conference title. They obliterated all regular season foes. The . one school which was able to beat them decided to fold rather than face the mighty Eagle cagers in a re match. The team traveled a If over the state, often staying in sleazy motels, taking on all comers. Hoardes of fans in fan buses followed the team's every move. The team was unstoppable. Who could stop the Eagle Express (except St. Anthony’s, of course), when they HISTORY (PARODY) had master tactician and Coach of the Year Bob Howarth at the Helm? The powerful Eagles finished the extraordinary season at 25 3, and were honored in an awards ceremony at- tended by local folk hero and guru, Richard Schultz. Coach Bob Howarth was given the key to the city, in a tear- jerking ceremony, by Mayor Tommy Cross. The baseball team had a fairly good season under coach Fred Henry. John Inman tossed a no hitter and he, Tom O'Leary, and Andy Pipala, were chosen as all-Central Valley Conference. The team would have had an even better season if the seniors didn't leave on their Florida trip. But there were no hard feelings since we felt our turn would come. We had our first overnight retreat. It was so cool! Everybody really rapped, man, and got to know each other. Everyone left looking forward to next year’s retreat almost as much as we anticipated the class trip to sunny Florida, (JSA. The Christmas Ball at President Park Firehouse was a great time. Atlantic City Express played the Jukes and Bruce so well. WOW! The Ball was so much better than those Southern fried Friday night dances. And once again, the play was a huge success under the direction of Mr. Coyle. Irene’ was put on with delightful style, flair, and elegance. Maureen Maher, Kara Sullivan, Bob Devine. Phyllis Howard, Ron Prybylowski and Zsuzsi Dalyai were excellent, and John Bukovec was inspiring in chorus. SENIOR YEAR This may have been the only year that we didn't mind that summer had to end. We came to school for our glory year as seniors with our Florida trip deposit money in one hand and pleasant smelling senior lounge furniture in the other! The class did a Fine job of putting together a cozy lounge made up of car seats and erector-set tables in front of Mr. Assistant Principal Gary Schrieber’s office. Regardless of what the lounge looked like, it was the people who sat in it that made it what it was. The Assistant Principal led his hard-fighting soccer team to their best-ever season. They reached the state tour- nament and made a respectable showing against the Hermits of St. Augustine Prep. Ken Connor established himself as one of the most prolific goal scorers in St. Mary’s history. He and jocular Fred McCourt were Central Valley Conference all-stars. Because of solid defensive help, Bill Parker almost had 769 saves. The football team shut out Hoffman again, 13-0, to capture a fourth straight Columbus Day Classic. Thus, the class of ’81 swept the series with Hoffman. With Captain Steve “Ace Servis calling the shots, St Mary's dominated the ground game at a muddy Veteran’s Field. Wrestling was not a laughing matter in 1980-81. The team finally formed the right frame of mind as they gained their first successful season. Under the guidance of the Ungerer brothers, the grapplers made opposing teams pay the price. The mighty basketball team had another astounding season. They dominated the CVC once again, trouncing opponents mercilessly. Coach Bob Howarth was named Kosh of the Year by the Tel-Aviv Tribune. In a glittering ceremony, assistant coach Gillie Pritchard, and second assistant coach John Morvay, were awarded the keys to the city garage by James and Joseph Moglia. . The Retreat was so enriching that suggestions were made to have another retreat, because aside from our Florida trip, the class would NEVER have another chance to be together away from school. The Hootenanny saw two of the rock legends of St Mary’s give their farewell performances. Bob Arrington, Lily Langtry fame brought tears to our eyes and lumps to our throats when he played Heart of Gold on guitar and harmonica at the same time. Jim Campbell and Stepchild II concluded the night by making sure everybody had a real good time listening to some vintage rock. Other hits performed included, Do you know the way to Miami Beach, Florida on My Mind, ‘‘The Yellow Rose of Florida, and the themes to “Gentle Ben and Flipper.” The prom, held in the plush Laudredale Room of the Helmetta Hilton Hotel, was a gala spectacle. Sam's Grocery Store had a run on distilled water while the Snuff Factory Blues Band strummed on through the evening. The prom was so crowded that some people had to park their cars outside the city limits. The year had gone so well. It was undoubtedly our best of the four at St. Mary’s. We had finished our classes, taken our exams, bought our suntan oil and packed our bags ... but it was tropical storm season on the Gulf Coast. The highhhhh winds of the hurricane, the eightieth of the season, roared through Florida, leaving nothing behind but destruction, devastation, damage, death and disintegrated Delta airlines departure tickets. The entire class grieved over the cancellation of our splendid plans. The hurricane would not let us go trippin’. It was the biggest disappointment since Lori “Lefty Limerick lost her rematch at Resorts International. It was much too much. It was the end of our elaborate plans.
