SecW Sessiow Bishops Hogan and Ahr wait to greet His Holiness. Voitocuv (I Our late Pope, John XXIII, possessed an endless love of mankind that cncloaked the entire world. His heart knew no barriers of race, color, or religion. Because of this, his constant prayer was the unification of all men under the flag of peace. It was this continual striving to establish universal peace upon the four pillars of truth, justice, charity, and liberty that urged him to assemble the Coun- cilor Fathers. Like many great men, however, John XXIII did not live to see the fruits of his boundless labor. His successor, Pope Paul VI, has now accepted command of the Crusade for Peace. Attempting to win the battle against separation, Paul VI has reconvened the Council. It is the weapon which will conquer disorder, confusion, and unhappiness, and bring about the reign of order, true joy, and peace. As we prepare to step forward into the world of to- morrow, our hearts cry out that eternal prayer — “Pacem in Terris.” MOST REVEREND GEORGE W. AHR 5

JOHN FITZGERALD KENNEDY We, the graduating class of 1964, dedicate this yearbook to the immortal spirit of youth and courage — to the man, John Fitzgerald Kennedy. Seeking to build our future lives on a firm foundation, we strive to attain the ideals and virtues manifested in his life. To John F. Kennedy courage was not merely a word in the dictionary; it became a way of life. To him the profound truths of religion were not a framework in which to enclose platitudes, but the seeds of justice and the pathways to daily righteousness. John F. Kennedy was a peak on the sum- mit of mankind; yet, he was warm and com- passionate. He was the flame that enkindled the fire of the world; yet, he was understand- ing and forgiving. He was the President of the United States of America; yet, John F. Ken- nedy was youth’s best friend. As he armed himself with truth, so also he has armed our hearts and minds. He has unveiled the veil which stood between us and our true ideals and values. He has given us the hammer with which to break the chains that stand in the way of justice, unity, and true freedom. Yes, John F. Kennedy has given much, and on November 22, 1963, he gave all that a man can give — his life. Devotion to country, deep kinship with faith and family, heroism, wisdom, integrity, wit, joyous smile, unconquerable resolution — these are the legacies bequeathed to our genera- tion. In his own tragically abbreviated life, John Fitzgerald Kennedy has left us not merely a profile in courage, but a spirit — a living voice that time will not mute, a clarion that will ring down the ages. Photo by John Leone, Monitor Staff “ . . . the ancient vision of ‘peace on earth, good will toward men’ . . . That must always be our goal — and the right- eousness of our cause must always underlie our strength.” 4

Justice , the golden key to human relations, stands today as a golden crown of well-being in a cold world. Throughout our years at Saint Mary’s, we have not only learned in detail about this virtue, but have also witnessed the very best examples of it in our teachers. Striving daily to fulfill the command of Christ, “Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His justice,” members of Saint Mary’s faculty, religious and lay alike, have laid the foundation of our awakening to spiritual and material values. They have demonstrated the worth of these values by sharing their knowl- edge, constantly oblivious to personal fortune and gain. Now, standing of the brink of the adult world, we must reap the benefits of their instruction and example. We must strive, as our teachers have striven, to attain justice in the world, for only by sharing with the neighbors of world can we achieve our ultimate goals — peace here and hereafter.
