Pimnh Scejpvub Qoutlv Atoboy, Je tsey Cms oft 1964 Iff f-figji Qckoob H uM UW ► Justice Unity Graduation symbolizes a beginning as well as an end. With echoes of our late President’s words resounding in our hearts, we leave these familiar pathways and guide our footsteps toward distant goals. The virtue of justice must lead us in our efforts to move this new generation. Each in- dividual must be honest with himself and his neighbor before one nation can be just with another. All must put aside their hates and preju- dices and unite with friends and foes alike. Together our generation can conquer discrim- ination and venture forth to a new life. Di- vided we can only be overcome by all that we struggle-against. We reach out for freedom for all mankind. By pursuing the rays of hope and sacrifice we will be assured of the eternal light of liberty. Our goals can never be attained if deceitful means are utilized. A predominating factor in our future lives, therefore, must be truth. Every person, however, can be truthful to his fellowman only if he is sincere with himself. Above all we search for peace in our times. Although we may not complete this pursuit, we have the obligation at least to begin. As graduation takes us through this stage of life’s journey, we move forward to meet new challenges, accepting the torch that has been passed to us. 2 JpUl fmQ; tkfij . . . Seeking to build our future lives on a firm foundation, we strive to attain the ideals and virtues manifested in his life. To John F. Kennedy courage was not merely a word in the dictionary; it became a way of life. To him the profound truths of religion were not a framework in which to enclose platitudes, but the seeds of justice and the pathways to daily righteousness. John F. Kennedy was a peak on the sum- mit of mankind; yet, he was warm and com- passionate. He was the flame that enkindled the fire of the world; yet, he was understand- ing and forgiving. He was the President of the United States of America; yet, John F. Ken- nedy was youth’s best friend. As he armed himself with truth, so also he has armed our hearts and minds. He has unveiled the veil which stood between us and our true ideals and values. He has given us the hammer with which to break the chains that stand in the way of justice, unity, and true freedom. Yes, John F. Kennedy has given much, and on November 22, 1963, he gave all that a man can give — his life. Devotion to country, deep kinship with faith and family, heroism, wisdom, integrity, wit, joyous smile, unconquerable resolution — these are the legacies bequeathed to our genera- tion. In his own tragically abbreviated life, John Fitzgerald Kennedy has left us not merely a profile in courage, but a spirit — a living voice that time will not mute, a clarion that will ring down the ages. Photo by John Leone, Monitor Staff “ . . . the ancient vision of ‘peace on earth, good will toward men’ . . . That must always be our goal — and the right- eousness of our cause must always underlie our strength.” 4 SecW Sessiow Bishops Hogan and Ahr wait to greet His Holiness. Voitocuv (I Our late Pope, John XXIII, possessed an endless love of mankind that cncloaked the entire world. His heart knew no barriers of race, color, or religion. Because of this, his constant prayer was the unification of all men under the flag of peace. It was this continual striving to establish universal peace upon the four pillars of truth, justice, charity, and liberty that urged him to assemble the Coun- cilor Fathers. Like many great men, however, John XXIII did not live to see the fruits of his boundless labor. His successor, Pope Paul VI, has now accepted command of the Crusade for Peace. Attempting to win the battle against separation, Paul VI has reconvened the Council. It is the weapon which will conquer disorder, confusion, and unhappiness, and bring about the reign of order, true joy, and peace. As we prepare to step forward into the world of to- morrow, our hearts cry out that eternal prayer — “Pacem in Terris.” MOST REVEREND GEORGE W. AHR 5 Justice , the golden key to human relations, stands today as a golden crown of well-being in a cold world. Throughout our years at Saint Mary’s, we have not only learned in detail about this virtue, but have also witnessed the very best examples of it in our teachers. Striving daily to fulfill the command of Christ, “Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His justice,” members of Saint Mary’s faculty, religious and lay alike, have laid the foundation of our awakening to spiritual and material values. They have demonstrated the worth of these values by sharing their knowl- edge, constantly oblivious to personal fortune and gain. Now, standing of the brink of the adult world, we must reap the benefits of their instruction and example. We must strive, as our teachers have striven, to attain justice in the world, for only by sharing with the neighbors of world can we achieve our ultimate goals — peace here and hereafter. Bonded by the same ideals and principles which our teachers impart to us, our various academic subjects become as one, with but a single goal. Fused by Religion, mathematics, science, language and literature meld into a solitary whole. Although unity is an abstract term, it can be clearly seen in the arrangement of our academic curriculum. All subjects tend to develop the student to use his talents to sene God well. In language and literature we realize the beauty of God and His creatures; in science we discover the life-giving principle of the Creator; in mathematics, the orderliness of H is plan. No matter what the way of life for which we are now preparing, we all have this single goal: Union with God. As we leave Saint Man’s, a desire for social unity comes with us. We’ve observed unity: we've known a sense of harmony, concord, and togetherness in our years at SMI I. Armed with this knowledge and understanding, we now go forth well pre- pared to apply this principle in our graduate life. The Student Council always remembers Sister Mary Leonard on her feast day. It is said that the spirit of an entire high school depends upon its seniors. This is, indeed, true. For all other classes look up to these young men and women with respect, hoping that their day will soon come. At this time the sen- ior, too, begins to realize the need for self- improvement. With this idea in mind, he strives to do his very best. College applica- tions begin to be sent out with an enclosed high school transcript. Applications for busi- ness positions are filed. The subjects become more specialized with trigonometry and phy- sics for the science-minded as well as steno- graphy and secretarial practice for the office bound. Religion IV is taught by the priests and this time it is vocations that are discussed to great detail. As the end of the year comes in sighf, graduation practice is begun. The time has come when the graduates must make way for future seniors. They must make use of the education given to them through these four years. The final step has just been taken, yet this is really only the beginning. In Junior Year at Saint Mary's the maturity of young adulthood be- gins to seep through. No longer are students expected to be told what to study, how long to study, or where to find the material. They are to assume responsibility for working on their own, if they wish to succeed. The subjects of Junior Year become more involved and chal- lenge the students’ intelligence. Religion be- comes more meaningful. The priests begin to teach the practicality of it in our daily lives. New interests and extra-curricular activities join in making this year one of the best. Now, as the students become sophomores, they are faced with the problem of selecting a field in which to study. With the help of God’s grace, they may choose from any one of five courses offered here at Saint Mary’s — Classi- cal, General Academic, Secretarial, and Gen- eral. In all of these courses, the students are given a well-rounded curriculum necessary to cope with the many problems that will con- front them both in their careers and in every- day life. They arc taught to control their thinking in the math courses, to learn the na- ture of this world in their biology course, to become culturally adjusted through the mod- ern language courses, and to become better acquainted with our Creator Who gives all the opportunity to appreciate His gifts to us. Through this year sophomores grow by using these gifts and they form judgments and study habits that will lead them successfully to Jun- ior Year. That step will provide the key that will open the doors to their future. Although they may at first seem confused, bewildered, and amazed, they eventually become accustomed to the everyday life of the school and its ac- tivities. In this first year all freshmen receive the same diversified curriculum. This ranges from the more difficult subjects, such as Latin and its “sum, es, est . . to the wonderful world of art. Entwined within all these there is Religion which should and does play the biggest part of our lives. With these and the many extra-curricular activities, the freshmen are given a firm footing toward the achieve- ment of their final goal. Z' 9 .39 pMSWfo , as appropriately applied to all mankind, is the right to do as one ought. When applied to student activity it allows the choice of various modes of self-expression as set up in the extra-curricular program. During formative years, even more important than the acquisition of freedom, is the effort made striving for it. For only in this will one exercise oneself in its practice and preserve it for future years. At Saint Mary’s, the true organization man is the one who participates, leads his talents, and gleans much from the contributions of others. He is anxious to give, to express himself, and to develop his gifts. Under the guidance of modera- tors he is led to mature understanding and seeks to fulfill his obligation to do as he ought in all the situations that surround his undertakings. Our period of apprenticeship in handling organizations on our own, under school supervision, will enable us to exercise leadership embodying high ideals when we become adults.. It is then that the freedom we displayed in sports, in club activities, or in various other extra-curricular programs will recur to form right decisions for us in later life. mm WMff rssmU yf Jli'a igi. R sfegtous AotuAtties Sodality and retreat are two of the most important re- ligious activities at Saint Mary's High School. The aim of the Sodality is to gain for its members the high degree of holiness, exemplified by Mary, its model. The way of life which the Sodalist lives sets her apart as an example and model of Catholic Youth. She does not belong to the Sodality for social enjoyment or advance- ment, but for spiritual perfection. Perfection that is at- tained by devotion to the Blessed Mother and, through her intercession, by a closer union with Our Lord. After mid-year examinations are over, the students of Saint Marx’s put everything aside to concentrate solely on their spiritual lives. Under the direction of a retreat master, they leave the hustle and bustle of everyday life and take a complete look at themselves — spiritually and mentally. At this time they find new strength, courage and determination to face the trials and discomforts that assail them throughout the school year. Gerry has received his diploma before us and has achieved the goal for which we are striving. Each member of our class remembers him now, as we stand in caps and gowns at gradua- tion, and will remember him throughout our lives in our hearts and by our prayers.
