We owe them our liberty and our way of life, and in this small way we wish to thank them. As we move forward, we only hope to prove that their efforts have not been in vain. Superintendent of Pleasants County Schools Mr. Irving L. Ambrose A.B., Shepherd College M.S., West Virginia University Board of Education Concerned citizens work closely with administrators in making and carrying out school policies. MEMBERS OF THE PLEASANTS COUNTY BOARD are, (from left): Mr. Irving Ambrose, superintendent; Mr. Carlton Buttrey, president; Mr. Edgar Simon ton, federal coordinator. STANDING: Mr. Burl Smith, Mr. George Rolston, Dr. George West, and Mr. J. D. W iley. 18 Office Personnel MRS. THELMA DAVIS MRS. OPAL NORTHROP MR. GLENN MOTT Secretary Secretary Director of T ransportation The happiness and prosperity of oar community depend greatly on the proper education of youth. The Board of Education, administrators, and faculty strive constantly to improve the education of Pleasants County students to prepare them for a successful life. A curriculum study and evaluation of county schools was made this year by educators from West Virginia University at the request of the Board. Pleasants County voters gave approval to continuation of excess tax levies for schools for another five years at a special election October 15, 1968. Returns showed that 79.12 per cent of the votes cast favored the levies. Federal Coordinator Mr. Edgar E. Simonton A .B., Marietta College M.S., West Virginia University Administration of federal aid has taken much planning, as has the comprehensive study for subject areas. Enrichment of curriculum materials for stu- dents has been the result. B.S., Davis and Elkins College M.S., West Virginia University Principal Ingram took office July 1, 1968. Mr. Ingram has been on the school staff for 23 years, serving as assistant principal since 1955, and before that as head coach of all ath- letics. New classes this year are Biology I in the freshman year to be followed by an advanced science program. Biology II was new this year. The Little Theatre was converted into a classroom for team teaching in freshman and sophomore social studies. Supervised study replaced study halls. Language arts was added to the eighth grade curriculum. Other new subjects were conservation, personal finance, dramatics, music theory, more sections of drivers’ education, and business English. As a school, we must learn to take pupils on the level where we find them and develop all of them to the extent of their abilities. We want to prepare them for their obligations as citizens of our democracy, for a rich and satisfying personal life, and for participation in some special calling.” 20 21 MR. ROBERT ADKINS B.
