Ig A vs Q L l -- My name 15 Joseph Sptnkpfs Tlus story has never been recorded anywhere but tn my drary Havrng notlung to do at the moment I tlunk I ll rub the dust from the covers and look back at my last entry Back rn the year 1972 I was a reporter for the Prxvate Occurences Both Forexgn and Repulsrve I don t know how I ever began to work for that decreptt paper It was owned by 11m Simonton and Paul Webb neither of whom knew a hnotype machine from a typewrtter When I jorned the staff that paru cular paper was feudrng w1th the Poor Vtnton s Almanac edrted by Vrnton Gwrnn formerly of the St Marys Leader or somethmg The two papers werea argurng about who won the election back rn 52 I never occured to erther of them to look at a hrstory book Ah' l remember the staff so well There was Elsre Park former stnp teaser at the John Campbell Burlesque Palace Good old John when he was 1n school all he though about was automob1les but he soon wtsed up And there was Eva Nell Reynolds a calm collected soul All collected tn one place though She set type Ido remember Ruth L1ttle and Reva Dunn They had an rdortrc srgn on therr desk lt read Little Dunn They never said much just sat 1n heu corner and rubbed snuff When I walked 1n that day I saw the other four members of the staff Barbara Whaley Barbara Maxwell Mary Sue Lauhon and Mary Smith mthe back of the room tolling over a hot pool table Yes the editors took 20011: of our salaries to firush payrng for tt We ll skip over the uninteresung parts about how I set type and assumed the name of Cub Spxnkpfs and get to the part where I was assigned to cover the Club Canasta Whenlstarted out on the assignment I thought it was one of those routrne Jobs But to my surpnse rt was to cover the riot that broke out at the Club Canasta owned by James Gault Naturally I d1dn t know what it was all about till I got there When I tried to enter the front door I-lammer Brrkhremer the bouncer told me to stay out I was ready to go home and call it a day Then I decrded to try the back door I entered from the rear naturally Boy' Thatwaswhenl saw Carol Elder the star dancer at the Club I offered to walk her home but Just as she turned me down a Cadrllac convertrble drove up It was dnven by B1llWhaley Local bank er He threw hrs coat hned w1th 14 k Taft Buttons across a puddle for her to walk across and to keep her from getttng her tootsres wet no doubt f ,..- .
