Maryd .High Sclzoof Sl. .fuary4, ul va. page two orewor M Preparing an annual should be a labor of love, a task in which the staff, assisted or obstructed by its adviser, attempts to create a book that will capture the old school spirit in a manner that is pleasing to both the eye and the heart. If from somewhere there would appear a great white father who would guarantee ample funds for such a project, the staffs work would be limited only by its imagination or the lackl of it. However, the ugly monster better known as a budget constantly hovers over us and bars our attempted flights from tradition. We have tried to do a few things that were diferent, some of our innovations are nothing more than omissions of features that merited space only because they had always been in a yearbook. We have culled from our pages lengthy summaries of various activities, most of these can be found in the pages of our school paper. Pictures! P i c t u r e s I and more pictureslv de- manded the staff members, and this yearbook bows to their demands. We hope you'll enjoy your 1950 PURPLE and GOLD and feel confident that your enjoyment will grow with the passing years. Elle Staff ,Dedication R, l It is said that no man is a hero to his valetg and it may be added that no yearbook adviser is a hero to his staff. But the nicest things about old adages are the exceptionsg the nicest of these exceptions is our senior sponsor, Miss Nell Williams. Miss Williams almost literally fought with many of her staffs to prevent their dedicating a yearbook to herg and she always won. B-ut now that the yearbook is in other hands, the members of this years senior class take this opportunity to dedicate this yearbook to her in appreciation for all she has done for us and the many senior classes before us. F. ROSENLIEB Those who know him well will wonder whether the plans he is shown examining in this picture are for the new grade schools, which go from the blue-print stage to actuality this year, or for a new high school ten or twenty years from now. Though acutely con- scious of immediate school needs, no one will catch him unprepared in the future. rincipa ORAN B. FARREN Now ending his second year as our principal, Mr. Farren has pro- vided the spark of leadership that is rapidly bringing St. Marys High school to the front as one of the leading high schools in the state, Feeling that principals frequently lose touch with students and stu- dent-teacher situations, our prin- cipal has added to his already nu- merous duties the teaching of a class in psychology. Their biggest project was financing the current Purple and Gold. 616:44 jvliAioryP P P P enior Cfaaa .Hiafory ben school opened in September, 1946, 81 members of the class of '50 were seemingly anxious to start down the road to graduation. At an early class meeting, the members of the class selected the white rose as the class flower, green and white as the class colors, and Nil Desperandumn as their motto. Our class officers when wc were freshmen were as follows: President . , . . Joe Laughlin Vice-president , . . . . . . ..,.,. Bobbie lngram Secretary-Treasurer ...,, .,,... . . . Mary Jane Haverstraw Sponsors ,... , Mr. Eckert, Miss Bush, and Mrs. Van Valey Six of our class fell by the wayside during the first year: and 75 returned for another try in September, 1947. Our Sophomore carnival set records in proiit and at- tendance that haven't been equalled since. Our Sophomore officers were: President , . Jim Cramblett Vice-president . , , Ruth Dotson Secretary-Treasurer . , . . Robert Metcalf Sponsors , . . . . Mr. Samuels. Mr. Eckert, and Mrs. Cornell By the fall of l948, our class membership had dwindled to 68 as we began our last but one year in SMHS. Our projects included operating the refreshment concession at football games, opening a recreation center at the Legion Hall, selling cards and sta- tionery, and presenting the play, The Case of the Laughing Dwarf. Having filled our coffers, we now decided to get rid of a surplus by putting on our Forty-niner banquet. Our ofhcers were: President ..., . . , James Davidson Vice-president . . . Coach A'Bob Adkins doubled up on his duties since last year. After one year coaching the reserves, Bob decided to begin develoo- ing basketball talent a little earlier by starting a Junior High team. His Little Devils won six of their fifteen games, entered two tour- naments, were eliminated from both by very close scores, and gained a lot of valuable experience that should pay off in the future. lri addition to junior-high activities, Mr. Adkins had to sweat out all of the reserve contests and helped coach them also. page sixty-one Q, 1 page .si',x'1y-two Cheerleadera tttrviw' Y x I N Do'r'i'i' HARPER EVA Nieu. During the football season, their work was only moderately difficult: but basketball season really taxed their imaginations when it called for development of new cheers to prod an unenthusiastic student body into any sound louder than humph. i iiifei- jggfjjageball f confidence is any indication of things to come, the Blue Devil baseball team should be well on its way to a championship by the time this book is circulating among the students. For the first time in several years, the coaching staff has an experienced man for almost every position. Hahn, Wilson and Joy should provide the hurling strength with Ingram ready to step in as relief if necessary. Vinton Gwinn and Ingram will probably split the duties behind the plate and one will move to an infield post when the other is catching. Jim Snyder and John Chipps will fight it out for the keystone postg and Metcalf and XVebb will probably split shortstop duties. Cosper has the inside track for the third base job, The outf field patrol will probaby include Cramblett, Underwood, Dennis and Sole. Jim Simonton, Phillips, Smith. It not only promotes participation in physical education and its related activities but also provides for responsibilities, student partcipation in planning and encourages student leadership through all activity areas. Objectives: Develop wholesome and diversified program of games, sports, outings and social gatherings: care for leisure time: provide activities for many girls rather than for a few: encourage leadership: encourage fellowship and friendliness among girls: encourage desirable health practices, attitudes and ideals: foster a spirit of good sports- manship: foster clean, Wholesome recreation under supervision: make the school proud of each GAA member. Membership: The initial year of organization was open to any girl in the Junior- senior high school. Because of the large number desiring to become members and to be able efficiently and conscientiously to serve the pupils it was decided to limit the number to be taken into the club. Beginning I945-46 school year. there were five members voted in from the senior class: five from the junior class: five from the sophomore class: four from the freshmen: three from the eighth grade and three from the seventh grade-a total of 25 members to be selected and initiated at the beginning of each school term. Dues not paid as of January ll, l95O, disqualified all wouldebe members. At that time, there were 65 members in good standing. Qualifications: Good sportsmanship displayed at all times: scholastic rating, of C at the close of the first semester: attending school faithfully: club loyalty: be a club leader or a group leader: if not a leader, learn to be a good follower. Meetings: Semi-monthly, second and fourth Wednesday with one special program during the month. Special meetings may be called by members of the executive com- mittee at any time. Activities planned for l949-50: Assembly program: health projects: bowling league: square dances for members and their friends: book reviews: booster pin campaign: basketball tournament: Christmas observance: open house game evening for any girl in the school once a month: three guest speakers: outdoor recreation: intramural events: intramural awards and trophy. The success of the association has depended upon the fine cooperation of the members and through the efforts of the following officers: Sally Carpenter, Mary Ann Pickens, Alberta Brown, Sandra Snyder, Mary Lou McCullough.
