It has, indeed, been one of our most successful years as a singing group. Audition night came with the presentation of the Senior Play. ln truth, we were as excited and thrilled as the Seniors, for was this not our first performance? All went well, and it was with a certain amount ol pride that we received the enthusiastic applause of the audience with the singing of 'Solve Regina and the Big Brown Bearn. Further rehearsals included the harmonization of 'Beautiful Dreamerl' and ln the Gloamingn, the presentation of which promised to enthrall future listeners. ln a complete change of tempo and melody, we introduced for the first time over the air an entirely diiferent type ol music Gregorian Chant, the sacred and liturgical music of the Catholic Church. lhus, in a small measure, we have promoted Catholic Action. This is 'Bill Stern' bringing you the latest sports news from here, there and everywhere. l-lere's the score on that St. Maryis vs. l-louse ol Providence game-A St. Marys winning 34-O. Yes, another win lor the Blue and Gold. That malces three out ol lour this season, as this was the last game. lncidentally, llve got a story on the Saints lor you tonight, so sit tight all you St. Marys fans. l.et's go baclc to a sunny alternoon in early September. lwo dozen eager youngsters are seated on the turl at one end ol a sun-swept football lield. A well-built man in his passing lorties stands before them, a shock ol his greying hair tossing in the breeze. So you want to play football lor St. Marys, eh? All right, let's get started. First ol all, football is a game ol what, Ackerman? Bumps, Sir. Qne ol the youths replied. mlhatls right , the coach went on. What loiir things malco a football player, Dwyor'? Another boy rellected and said, Guts, ability, physique ancleff What else, Larry? Desire to play the game. 3Olil Only desire to play the game comes first. If you boys really want to play the game, l'll make a win- ning team out of you. mlhe boys had the desire and also a goodly share of the other three essentials. The boys worked on. The team developed. The fast-breaking T smoothed out behind a coordinated line. Three weeks later they took to the field in their Blue and Gold jerseys and conquered Hunt Memorial 46-O. It was evident that the long, gruelling scrimmages had paid off. lt wasn't too long before this same team popped up against St. Francis de Sales in Geneva. Al- though they faced an obviously bigger eleven, the Saints scored in the second quarter on an off-tackle thrust by Bob Adams, the sophomore fullback. The boys from Cortland enlarged their 6-O half-time lead to 'I3-O in the last quarter when Ray Corser streaked off right tackle to pay dirt on the infamous cross-buck. Thats the way it ended and the Irish returned home triumphant. O O O o o o o. o o o o x x x 'x x X x x X x x Coach Martin lamented the four-week lay off his team had to undergo, but Manager McNeil in- formed him that games were not to be had. During this period, injuries were numerous, Somewhat weakened, the Saints went to Auburn for their all-important game with Holy Family. Tom Walsh, crack half-back, was inactive because of a back injury and here and there one could detect a limp, a taped arm or a bent finger, among the starting line up. Although the powerful St. Mary's line stopped all the Purple and Goldsground attacks, their pass defense was split in two when Auburn tallied three times, either directly or indirectly via the forward pass. Even more discouraging was the fact that St. Mary's ground offensive bogged twice near Holy l:amily's twenty and once on their four yard line. The Irish congratulated their rivals after the game, as goes the path of good sportmanship, but the 'I9-O licking was a bitter pill to swallow. l believe you'lI find the Cortland boys have already made up their minds as to what is going to happen next year. Strange as it may seem, this game today, sport fans, doesn't end this story. What these boys and a hundred others have learned at St. Mary's through their coach, Bob Martin, is evidenced to day on land, sea and in the air, wherever the Blue and Gold alumni fight. The thanks of all these grads and the boys on the team are extended to Mr. Martin, Fr. Whalen, John McNeil, the school and the Holy Name Society for the successful season they made possible. All the aforementioned join hands to bid adieu to the de- parting seniors, Joe Dwyer, tackle and captain of the 1944 eleven, Gene Shirley the other husky tackle of the left side of the line, Doyle Glover, dependable halfback and Whitey' Michaud, versatile left- handed quarter-back. E131 KIS CCS Left to Right: Coach McEvoy, L. Martin, J. Colvin, T. McEvoy, E. Shirley, I-l. Popovich, J, Quinn, Mgr., R. White, F. Woods, T. Walsh, J. Rush Any similarity between St. Mary's Varsity Basketball team and the title ol radio's most humorous lilteen-minute sl4etch .EASY ACES is purely intentionall For St. Maryls capable varsity is composed of eacy aces who Find little ditliculty in pushing up high scores. l-lere is Station SMl-lS's own sports' analyst, Larry Martin, to give you highlights ol the year's games. UAlter getting oil to a poor start, the Blue and Gold courtsters ol St. Mary's hit their stride about mid- season and finished the season with a record ol 9 wins and l4 losses. Coach Deke, McEvoy was not discouraged when his proteges dropped eight straight contests, but instead he l4ept plugging until he lound a winning combination which copped six out ol its last eight games. Midway in the season the Saints were hampered by the loss ol one ot their veteran guards, Joe Dwyer, who enlisted in the Navy. When the Saints journeyed to Auburn on March 9th, two ol its members were due to don their unilorms lor the last time. lhese two players received a Fitting going-away present when the Saints triumphed over the Hprison cityn team by a decisive score ol 35-17. As the team has lost only two players, Abe Shirley by graduation, and lam McEvoy by enlistment, the prospects tor next year's team are not too dark. All our thanlcs goto Deke H Mclfvoy for everything he taught us, to Father Whalen lor his con- lirlonco in the team, and also to .laclc Quinn lor his excellent job ol managing this year's teamdi 323 5 . fx' cgfafs 0 ffofnoffow Alarry Martin, spealdng: Under the vvatchlul guidance ol Coach Del4e,' McEvoy, the Blue and Gold Junior Varsity experienced a nip-andftucl4 season, dropping only seven games out ol a total ol seventeen. What these young stars laclted in age and experience, they more than made up by their ag- gressive, do-or-die spirit. Going along in bulldog fashion, the Jay Vees pulled many games out ol the tire, vvhich otherwise vvould have been lost had it not been lor that extra bit ol drive so necessary to produce a vvinning combination.
