6 CHAFF AND WHEAT flixcerpts from Letters? B124 Tell Mom I'm feeling great . . . Think I've started to gain weight . . . This regularity goes well with me . . . We live from letter to letter over on this side . . . Our camp is in the middle of an extra large oasis . . . The moon looks very romantic from underneath the palms . . . It'd make a swell place for Clark Gable . . . Wish he were here instead of me . . . I arrived safely after a pleasant voyage . . . I had the unique experience of eating breakfast in Ireland, dinner in Scot- land, and supper in England . . . I would like a yearbook this year if it's going to be about fellows in service . . . I have a special ambition these days to come back to a history class and listen to what is being taught about this war . . . I think there will be a lot of things a person can contradict . . . I met a swell English girl last October-still going around with her . . . Spring in England is really beautiful . . . I went cycling the other day over the countryside . . . I can't tell where I've been or where I may be sent because of Army Censors . . . It really isn't bad here . . . Of course, not as good as home, but then one can't have everything . . . I'm seriously considering writing Hirohito and asking him where my last month's pay is! . . . Even with all my friends, there are times when I become lonely, and ther-e is nothing that can make me feel at ease as much as saying the Rosary . . . We are back in reserve now, getting replacements and new equipment . . . Best of all taking baths in an old harem . . . We have been at the front for two solid months . . . Would you please offer your Mass and Holy Communion for all the fellows over here? . . . Ask the stu- dents to do the same . . . I know that most of us would feel a lot better if we knew we had some spiritual help to give us strength . . . Occasionally we do see papers and funnies from home, but I have yet to see a movie in this land . . . As a rule we're kept too busy for such things, which is as it should be, for, 'this is war', as Eleanor would say . . . We had three weddings this week-end. One was a big affair. There were two generals, four colonels, and about five chaplains present. The lieutenant and his bride were married at the evening Mass at six-thirty. They both came from Kansas and are fine Catholics. They went through Catholic high school together. The girl surprised me, for she need have fasted only four hours before Communion, just as the boys do, but she insisted on fasting all that day, Friday, so she could receive Holy Communion at her wedding Mass . . . When I was in Africa, my high school fmaybe we'd better skip thatl French was only good enough to get us eggs. I ate fourteen one day and have had one since I've been here CEnglandJ. We have powdered ones now, but plenty of fresh vegetables . . . Night before last we slept in huts Cin Africal similar to native huts. The place was just hewn out of the jungle with black natives working all over the place. Over here one realizes the shortage of matches, rub- ber, gas, meat and choice foods. At first it was hard to eat but now it's easy. The food is good but doesn't look a bit appetizing. You see wood burning cars and buses Cwhat few there arel and lots of auto bodies pulled around by horses . . .
