MAR Y'S CENTRAL CATHOLIC HIGH ORANGE, TEXAS 1 e icafion We, the Senior Class of 1958, fondly dedicate our annual, MATER DEI, to the future graduating Seniors of the new St. Mary's Central Catholic High School. The memories to you as therefore 3 R's, as help you you gain in this new school will be as treasured ours are of the old school. It is still St. Mary's3 , in this school you will gain the knowledge of the well as the teachings of the Church, which will gain a high place in heaven, the same as we received in the old school building. We sincerely hope that you, the future Seniors of St. Mary's High School, will be as proud of the school as We are and that all of us will live up to the ideals and principles taught in the school and that we will always be a credit to it. 2 mafei aaewafzb To enter Orange from almost any point, it is necessary to cross one or more bridges. Figuratively, Orange's emergence from the sea of Texas wilderness and the rise of the class of '58 from the dark waters of ignor- ance have required crossing quite a few bridges built by human endeavor. Baptism was the first and essential bridge across the River Styx. The saving waters gave us-not invulnerability-but immortality. ln the pages of this volume, dedicated to her who crushest the head of the Stygian foe, one may catch a glimpse of those essential construction materials with which we will build our bridges across the rivers of ignorance and misunderstanding-the knowledge and insight we have acquired from our teachers, from our companions, and, last but not least, from our books. Most of our high school days have been spent at old St. Mary's. We are happy to have had a part in building this bridge from the old to the new. Wherever our paths may lead, we will go from St. Mary's equipped with the materials and the blueprints for the most important bridge of all-the bridge to Eternity. We wish to thank you for your permission to build a new ' high school. We will always remember you in our prayers for the omoortunity you have given us of finishinq our Catholic education. Sincerely yours, The Seniors of '58 6 Dear Father Joe, We, the class of '58, wish to express our sincerest gratitude and aooreciation to you for your helf in procurinf for us a Catholic high school education. Without your untiring effort it would have been imvossible for us to receive the knowledge of our 4- Faith and, as a consequence, the love that we now have for Christ and His teachings. Now, in our new school, larver numbers of students will be as fortunate as we. This again was made oossible by your hard work. Thank you, Father, for all that you have done for us We shall pray for you. Will you please remember us in your prayers? Sincerely, The Seniors of '58 7 51. ,Marys Qllpzrrlg F- G. fax B45 Grange, Uexas January 6, 1958 Feast of the Epiphany Dear Seniors, With a great deal of satisfaction I have looked forward to the completion of our new high school. The over crowdedness in the old school made it a necessity. We hope that all Catholic boys and girls of this area will now find it possible to attend the parochial school, where they will be able to find an explanation and understanding of their religion which is so essential in life. Those of you who have had the opportunity to attend St. Mary's will in the future undoubtedly appreciate the religious instructions you received. May you always be guided by the principles that you were taught at St. Mary's and may your way of living be an inspiration to those around you. This day made us realize that we were coming to the end of twelve long years of hard work and would soon take another step in life. When Father Joe blessed our rings, he made us realize that the shield was not just a decoration but a sign of truth. This has now become a symbol of our lives in the future: TRUTH. Where there is hatred, let me sow love, where there is injury, pardon, where there is doubt, faith, where there is despair, hope, where there is darkness, light, and where there is sadness, joy. O, Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console, to be under- stood as to understand, to be loved as to love, for it is in giving that we receive, it is in par- doning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. -Saint Francis With the strides of progress that Mr. and Mrs. T. Mary's High School here. The 'majority of the students paid poll taxes in order to be eligible to name the candidate of their choice in the three-way race for president of the student-council. Three seniors. Faye Byrnes, Ger- ald Fisher and John B. Quigley, were chosen to-seek the office in a primary election held last Fri- day. A Candidates were proud to an- nounce- that nearly all the stu- dentsueligible forked over 5 cents each 'for a poll'tax. The winner will be president ot the student government but there will be a consolation to the two losers, they will be president and vice presi ent of ,the senior class. The nominees ,for the school's highest elective office were named by the ,senior class. Other officers of the council are Tommy Lastrrzwes, secretary, and Carmen Mires, treasurer. At least one ballot was'cast by a senior seriously gill. The trio of candidates, accompanied ,by a newsman, drove to the girl's home t0 P Ck up her secret ballot and serve as watchdogs of each other. Results of the elections at St. Mary's High School on September 18, 1957 were as follows: Student-body-president, Faye Byrnesp Tommy Lastrapes, segre tary, Carmen Mires, treasurer. May the students who participate so wholeheartedly in school elections always be so conscientious about voting when they help to make gh, laws of the COUr1try, state, or city or vote people to even more significant offices. 54 I The T. Every after- noon about twenty-five stalwarts were out for gruelling scrimmages. Glass flisloful The history of the Senior Class of 1958 begins with the first grade in which we crossed our first bridge. We stepped from behind our mother's skirts into a new world of books, classrooms, and teachers. Sr. Samuel helped us through this difficult period. Eight of our present seniors began to- gether that year-Janice Gauthier, Sylvia Simar, Gerald Fisher, Tommy Lester, Marie Romano, Carmen Mires, Gayle Perla and decorating the float for the Christmas parade, rehearsing John Quigley. Upon entering the second yea teachers among them were Sr. In this grade we added another third year another, Louis Semar. ceived a very sweet girl, Jimmie taught us again this year. Sr. Brendan in the fourth grade and we welcomed four new students-Faye Byrnes, Joyce Bar- ron, Dorothy Cormier and Rocky Breaux. Janice Gauthier and Marie Romano participated in the Royal Court during May of this year. We had charge of the Country Store for the May festival in our fifth year and with the help of Sr. Ceslaus it was very successful. The sixth grade with Mrs. Henry Adam as a teacher was a second bridge for us and made us feel very im- portant because we were helf-way through our school years, so we thought, because a college education was far from our minds then. During our seventh grade year under the gentle guidance of Sr. give first aid, to appreciate fine art tice self-control. The eighth grade was a happy took part in many activities. We we learned many things Ernest. We learned to and music, and to prac- one for us because we were the first members in the Junior Sodality. Many of us were in the drum and bugle corps or on the football team and we took several out-of-town trips on buses to football games. This year we gained two new students-David Gujdry and Ann Duos. Sr. Siena and Mrs. McBride together gave us a fine review of grammar school work to prepare us for high school. The ninth grade was a third bridge for us because we went from the security of grammar school to the awe- someness of high school. We really began to feel the pres- sure of our teen years. The new subiects, classes, and teachers had us thoroughly frightened. During this year Mr. Paul Breaux as our homeroom teacher helped us raise money for the Senior Breakfast. ,We enjoyed going to the Prom for the first time this year and also to the picnics. As sophomores, we started the year with a little more confidence than as freshmen. Sr. Genevieve did more than her share in helping us prepare for the Senior Prom, Blossom Time, which we gave that year. The sophomore class also presented a play entitled A Book a Day during book week. Two more students, Joan Whelan and Gerald Clark, came to our class this year. Mr. Breaux ioined us as our homeroom teacher again in our Junior year. Tommy Lastrapes came to us from Lake Charles, Louisiana, this year. This was the first year we participated in an operetta and also a music fesfival in Houston. We worked hard for the success of the Junior- Senior picnic, given at Moss Lake by our class. Janice Gauthier was first princess in the coronation of the Spring Festival. Other teachers during high school were Sr. Jane Frances and Sr. Trinita teaching typing, Sr. Claude, Algebra ll and Glee Club, and Sr. Evelyn, teaching us our sciences and first-year algebra. Our Senior year was one that will always hold happy memories for us. Sr. Rachel as our homeroom and religion teacher prepared us for our final bridge, graduation and life afterwards. Everything we did this year had a special significance for us because we were doing those things for the last time. It was our last time to elect class officers and a student body president, and it was our last year to sing at Midnight Mass with the high school choir. lt also was our last prom and school picnic. And some of the things we did marked us as Seniors, such as initiating the Freshmen, receiving our rings and having them blessed, for the Senior play, selling tickets to the chili supper and practicing for graduation. Then came the final and great- est thrill of all, receiving our diplomas. We wish to thank the Sisters who have taught and guided us, and the priests who have helped us through the years, and also we send our heartfelt thanks to our parents who lhave given us one of the wonderful gifts in life, a Catholic Education. at Q r 1- UQ i fl 1-Qsax Ei KTO Q yfi'h0CL c Y -.f til L' Q in f if ROCKY BAREAUX D-To graduate E-Ability to get along with others I-Girls pictures JOYCE BARRON D-To pass chemistry and trig. And A Suggestion First, congratulations to the graduating seniors for having attained this impor- tant goal in your lives. It is always a pleasure to keep in touch with young people and to offer our best wishes for your continued success. Secondly, may we also offer a suggestion to all students regarding the selection of a lifetime career? Such a decision is one of the most difficult in your young lives. It is also one of the most important. ' Undoubtedly you are aware of the needs, today and in the future, for scientifi- cally and technically trained people. In the defense of our country, through the use of complicated, scientific weapons or in the continued improvement of our standard of living through industrial progress-there is a need of educated and technically trained young people. If you are interested in the sciences and mathematics, we urge you to seriously consider a career in engineering or some 'technical field. But, regardless of your choice, we hope that with the aid of your parents and teachers you will study and work toward a career which will bring you happiness and a sense of achievement. E. I.
