Wen. COACH MEL STUESSY Coach Stuessy, a graduate of St, Edward's College, Austin, T e x as , began his coaching career at Saint Mary's in the fall of 1926. At this time he organized the school's first football and basketball teams. The 'Fighting Irish, under his guid- ance, won first place in the North- e as t Catholic Football Conference in 1945, 1949, and tied for the title in 1950. This year Coach Stuess is cele- brating his silver jubilee of coach - ing at Saint Mary's.Congratulations Stuess. W e a t St. Mary's sa lute you. FOOTBALL AT SAINT MARY'S When football was inaugurated at St. Mary's in 1926, fifteen boys reported for prac- tice. That first year the boys lost six games and tied one.' The first victory for St. Mary's was over Aquin of Freeport, and Father Conway allowed the student body to celebrate by declaring a holiday.. Football at St, Mary's has gone a long way since those early days. In 1936 and 1937 St. Mary's enjoyed two undefeated seasons, and in the two following years they lost only two games. Since the Northeast Catholic Conference w as formed in 1945, St. Mary's, the small- est school in the conference, has won the title twice and at the present time is shar- ing it with I. C, of Elmhurst. This is an enviable record. Much praise goes to Coach Stuessy who at times has achieved the seemingly impossi- ble. He has instilled in the boys a desire to win, and he has always managed to put on the field a squad determined to play its best regardless of the odds.
