JANUARY 29, 1951 On January 29, 1951 St. Mary's High School students carried their books from the school on Lincoln Avenue, which had housed them and many former students over a period of twenty-eight years, to the beautiful new modern high school on Tryon Street. The occasion was a memorable one, and not apt to be forgotten by the ninety-eight students and the five Sisters of the Holy Cross who are now enjoying the privilege of being the first group to occupy the new building. Father Joseph M.Egan planned the building with foresight and taste. Mem- bers ofthe parish are justly proud of this modern building. His Excellency, Bishop John J. Boylan of Rockford dedicated the new struc- ture on April 1, 1951. Laying of the Cornerstone 25 if - . tsp 11 ' -'35 -Q N' '. fl: .1 fr' 11,1 A L ..,4-va ,. ,..,. Rev. David Conway X ,fly JANUARY 15, 1917 January 15, 1917, St. Mary's students moved into the beautiful new school building which had been built under the direction of Father David Conway. His Excellency, Bishop P. J. Muldoon, formerly dedicated the building on April 29. It was not until September 8, 1923 that a room in the building housed the nucleus of St. Mary's High School. Twenty-two boys and girls, constituting the first Freshman Class, gathered there under the capable direc- tion of Sister M. Una, now Mother M. Una, Provincial of the Midwest pro- vince of the Sisters of the Holy Cross. The gymnasium facing Tryon Street was completed and ready for use in March, 1929. With its opening and under the excellent coaching of Mr. Mel- vin Stuessy athletics at St. Mary 's received a new impetus. The building is one of the best in this part of the state, and within its walls St. Mary's has played host to many fine teams. 'P I . I f' I Nui I . p 1 , ST.
