This year's book is dedicated to Mary, Queen of Pe ace , who has been our solace and inspiration in our spiritual and temporal undertakings. During these past fo ur years we have bee n fortunate to have been taught by the Sisters of the Holy Cross who are exemplars of the truly Christian way of life which we should aim to follow in the years to come. We are grateful for the very fine founda- tion we have re ce ive d , and with God's grace we hope to be a credit to all who have made these years possible. TO THE GRADUATES While extending my sincere congratulations to the Class of 1951, I wish to remind you that your work in life is just entering its more serious phase. You are going into a world that will make great de- mands upon your character--that will call for severe sacrifices--a world that will call for your best efforts and finest judgments for the good of society at large. Others, without the benefit and privilege of Catholic Education may be confused by issues and falter on thewnayg but with your back- ground of Catholic thought the issues are defined, the way well mark- ed, and the goal worth winning even though it tax you to the utmost. No other course will bring genuine happiness and success. May you have success and happiness but above all be always for the right. Live the truths you have been taught and thereby make better the community in which you live. May God bless you now and in all the years that are ahead. Reverend Joseph M. David Conway X ,fly JANUARY 15, 1917 January 15, 1917, St. Mary's students moved into the beautiful new school building which had been built under the direction of Father David Conway. His Excellency, Bishop P. J. Muldoon, formerly dedicated the building on April 29. It was not until September 8, 1923 that a room in the building housed the nucleus of St. Mary's High School. Twenty-two boys and girls, constituting the first Freshman Class, gathered there under the capable direc- tion of Sister M. Una, now Mother M. Una, Provincial of the Midwest pro- vince of the Sisters of the Holy Cross. The gymnasium facing Tryon Street was completed and ready for use in March, 1929. With its opening and under the excellent coaching of Mr. Mel- vin Stuessy athletics at St. Mary 's received a new impetus. The building is one of the best in this part of the state, and within its walls St. Mary's has played host to many fine teams. 'P I . I f' I Nui I . p 1 , ST. JANUARY 29, 1951 On January 29, 1951 St. Mary's High School students carried their books from the school on Lincoln Avenue, which had housed them and many former students over a period of twenty-eight years, to the beautiful new modern high school on Tryon Street. The occasion was a memorable one, and not apt to be forgotten by the ninety-eight students and the five Sisters of the Holy Cross who are now enjoying the privilege of being the first group to occupy the new building. Father Joseph M.Egan planned the building with foresight and taste. Mem- bers ofthe parish are justly proud of this modern building. His Excellency, Bishop John J. COACH MEL STUESSY Coach Stuessy, a graduate of St, Edward's College, Austin, T e x as , began his coaching career at Saint Mary's in the fall of 1926. At this time he organized the school's first football and basketball teams. The 'Fighting Irish, under his guid- ance, won first place in the North- e as t Catholic Football Conference in 1945, 1949, and tied for the title in 1950. This year Coach Stuess is cele- brating his silver jubilee of coach - ing at Saint Mary's.Congratulations Stuess. W e a t St. Mary's sa lute you. FOOTBALL AT SAINT MARY'S When football was inaugurated at St. Mary's in 1926, fifteen boys reported for prac- tice. That first year the boys lost six games and tied one.' The first victory for St. Mary's was over Aquin of Freeport, and Father Conway allowed the student body to celebrate by declaring a holiday.. Football at St, Mary's has gone a long way since those early days. In 1936 and 1937 St. Mary's enjoyed two undefeated seasons, and in the two following years they lost only two games. Since the Northeast Catholic Conference w as formed in 1945, St. Mary's, the small- est school in the conference, has won the title twice and at the present time is shar- ing it with I. C, of Elmhurst. This is an enviable record. Much praise goes to Coach Stuessy who at times has achieved the seemingly impossi- ble. He has instilled in the boys a desire to win, and he has always managed to put on the field a squad determined to play its best regardless of the odds. ..,-----,.,,.,. -- ,, W, .
