ST UDE NT QQVE, IA NMENT On March 8, the students of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts took over the legislature for the day. I left Southbridge at 7:h5 with Bobby LaFleche of Cola Tfnde and Richard LaFleche of Wells. Mr. Flannagan of Wells was nina enough to take us. When we reached Boston,we noticed i?c 'g:+:fgg, ahead of us. We followed him right to the State Hanes. On ar- riving, we found that our first session would be in the Erase of Representatives. There the Student Governor of the dey delivered his innaugural address and voiced his opinion on the bills to be debated in the course of the day. Following this session we went to our assigned rooms. As Labor Commissioner of the day, I was the guest of Ernest A,John - son, Commissioner of Labor and Industries in the State of Massa- chusetts. When I found my way to Mr. Johnson's office, I was greeted by Miss Crowley, his secretary. Soon I was introduced to the Commissioner who explained to me the functions of the Laborzud Industries Department. Miss Crowley took me to the different div- isions of the department and introduced me to the men and women who worked there. At noon-time I went to meet the other members of the Southbridge group with whom I went out to dinner. We took a taxi from the State House to Pieroni's which I found to be a very interesting experience. After dinner, we returned to the State House to listen to ses- sions in the House and Senate. Just before leaving I returned to the Labor and Industries Department to thank Miss Crowley for the time she had spent with me. We left Boston at 3:30 and arrived home weary but happy, with the happenings of the day. Here American Democracy and Liberty were born, free schools, free churches, free men. Here men fired the first shot to free this nation. FIRST DAY AT SCHCJOL The most exciting event in my life was the first dayci'school. It all began when I was standing in front of the school stairs and directly in front of me was Sister Superior directing all the new- comers to their classrooms. When she motioned for me tocome Ijust stood there and cried. Until she came down and took my hand, then she walked me down to our classroom. In our class we were doubled up with the second grade.Mycmustn Ann Marie was in the second grade and as soon as I saw her I started to cry. I guess I cried nearly all day. But most of all I remembei when it came time to go home Sister took me to the fifth and sixth grade where my brother was. There I knelt on the same chair as he while the whole class were saying prayers. I wanted to besnue that I didn't miss the bus. I think this is a day I shall always remem- ber. Jane Laughnane U MY VISIT T0 WASHINGTON On our spring vacation Mary Rischitelli and I went to Washing- ton. We left Saturday morning about l0gl5 and arrived in Delaware about 6:00. After checking in at the General Wayne Motel wexdsited Mary's Aunt and Uncle. Sunday morning after Mass and after we had said NGoodbyeHto our friends, we were happily on our way again. We registered at our hotel in Washington at about h:00 p.m, We ate and we went to the movies. Monday morning we went to seethedil ferent places of interest such as the White House, the Senate,andUn Pan American Building. Monday night we saw nThe Seven Wondersr of The Worldn. After debating for a few minutes on what to do next,we finally decided to go to the Zoo. Mary and I had never been toaaZd3 before and it proved very exciting. Tuesday afternoon 'we were on our way home. We arrived home Wednesday morning about 2:00 a.m. Jane Detarando Grade 8 A TRIBUTE T0 FATHER SANO I Q This space in our HMarianistvis a tribute to our former curate, the Reverend Damien J. Sano, who is now at the Franciscan Monastary at lu Bennet Street, Boston 13, Massachusetts., The pupils of Saint Maryfs will always remember Father Sano and the good works he did while he was here. X We ask God's blessing on him in his present assignment. Father Sano will live in the hearts of the pupils at St. Mary's for a long time. Since this is my last year at school and also the last artrde I will be writing about Father Sano, I, Eleanor Wonderlie, hope in thezhmure that someone else will take over in my place to give tri- bute to this wonderful priest.
