How he did so, despite great hardships, Is 'a story that's proudly told. This year his Golden Jubilee ' As a priest would have been celebrated. So this annual of the forty-niners To him is dedicated. FRESHMAN Just like prospectors seeking for gold in the gold rush of 1849, the class of 1949 set outon its trip through school school life eagerly and con- fidently. CAs confident as any freshman class ever wasll To lead us through the difficult first year of our quest for gold we chose as chief guide, Tom George. Assistant guide was Bill Buche. Pat Pat- terson was in charge of the diary of our journey, and Bennie Gerwert took care of the gold nuggets. We got ten new members to our troupe of gold seekers. This was the first year of football in St. Marys and representing the Freshmen were Tom George and J. B. Towner. Jeanne Bridwell was our cheerleader. Mary Frances Esch kept the rest of the world in touch with our progress as our cap- able class reporter. Towner, Gerwert, Buche, and Manning were on the basketball squad. This be- ing the first year for track, Manning, Lacina, Lyons, Towner, Murphy, and McQuade did the run- ning -for the Freshmen. Our first retreat, given by Father Canute, was a great success. Mary Ann Bnown and Bill Buche were our candidates for an- nual l-ging and queen. The majority of the Fresh- men took part in the minstrel, which was, as usual, a big success. A before-school-closed party had all the freshmen dressed as little children. One last fling at childhood before we traipsed down the hall under the new title of .... U H Jn, 1 4 l ...o 2' ., -sg i . SOPI-IOMORES The second year of the gold rush saw the class of '49 a little closer to their goal. Mary Ann Brown took over the job of leading us to gold. Helping her was J. B. Towner. Taking care .of the trip's diary was Marianne Smardo. Cheating the money bags this year was Francis Lyons. Out for football were Towner, Lyons, Lacina, Manning, Gerwert, George and Azamber. Representing us on the basketball team were Manning, Towner, Ger- wert, and Buche. Dollie Dean Murty began her career as cheerleader, a positi-on she has filled so well for three years. Shirley Ryan was an attend- ant to the football queen. Joan Massmann did a fine .l0b of reporting for us. This year Pittsburg played host to the KSSU Leadership School which was at K.S.T.C. We sponsored the Christmas dance. Our'annual candidates were J. B. Towner and Joan Massmann. Pat Patterson was treasurer of the J.A.A. We enjoyed our second retreat given by Father Allen. And almost all of the Sophomores blacked up to take part in the minstrel. After quite a successful year we journeyed upstairs where we became .... .c. 6' 9 J UNIORS we finally found the vein of gold and began to dig for it. Elected to be our foreman was Mary Frances Esch. Subforeman, George Oberley. The job .of writing up our successes and failures was handed to Joan Massmann. Don Manning took charge of the gold Our football boys were Towner, Lacina, Lyons, Giacometti, Manning, Ger- wert, George, Buche, and Azamber. Joan Mass- mann was chosen by the football boys as football queen. Shirley Ryan was chosen to help Dollie Dean in leading the cheers. Tlowner, Lyons, Lacina, Buche, Manning, and Gerwert played basketball this year. Georgie Oberley was the trainer all four of his high school years. Joan Massmann and Tom Gerant were members of the J .A.A. We sponsored the Hallowe'en dance. Rosemary .Simoncic was the first high school penny queen. Joan Massmann and Sylvia Ann Silvia were our reporters. Dorie Min- gori and Don Manning were our annual candidates. Our third minstrel was a big success, with four of the endmen and many solo numbers being sup- plied by the Juniors. 'Father Herbst gave the re- treat this year. The Juniors tofok the Seniors way down south for a prom and banquet given in a Southern Plantation manner. Everyone had a wonderful time. Now we are nearing our goal! We walked a few steps across the hall and were now known as . , , , SEN IORS Ah! At last we are nearing the end of our quest! Cecilia Baildelli held the whip and kept us working. Francis Lyons helped her hold it. Rose- mary Simoncic kept track of our progress, and Don Manning once more held the purse strings. Towner and George were co-captains of the football team. and working under them were Manning, Gerwert, McCaffrey. Buche, Lacina, Lyons, Gaicometti, Mc- Quade, and Zigmund. St. Mary's, for the first time in her history, won the Mineral Belt League foot- ball championship. But the joy of championsnip was marred by the death of our beloved Monsignor McCullough, who died the day before our champ- ionship game. Dollie Dean and Shirley, with the ad- dition of Pat Patterson, once more cheered the team on to victory. Dollie was elected our foot- ball queen, and Marianne Smardo was one of her attendants. George Oberley was elected president of the Sodality, Pat Patterson, vice-president, Dollie Murty, secretary, and Bennie Gerwert, treasurer. Sylvia Ann Silvia and Joan Massmann were elected as co-editors of the paper. Marianne Smardo and George Oberley edited the Marian, We celebrated Sister Linus' feast day with a picnic in Joplin. Father Howard gave our last retreat. Mary Frances Meyer was the second high school penny queen. The Seniors sponsored the Masquer- ade Ball for the grand opening of Teen-Town. We also sponsored the Christmas dance. Co-captains of the basketball team were Gerwert and Man- ning. On the team were Towner, Lacina, Gia- cometti, Buche, and Lyons. Al Gi-acometti and Jeannie Bridwell were our annual candidates this year. Many of the seniors took part in the minstrel which was, as always, a big success. Toward the end of school there were many picnics and parties for the Seniors, and the wonderful banquet given us by the Juniors. Then came class night and grad- uation day. The 49'ers have found goldll What we were seeking during the past four years is here in our hands, but we are reluctant to take it, for it means the beginning of something new. But we know that with the ropes of the past, we shall ring the bells of the future. G6M..EVSM HEDFQBZKSWWS In the gold-mining town, Golden Future, the popwlation Is really a very novel kind of creation. The first here to,make their settlementation Were MARIANNE and SAM, partners in the S. Kr S. Digging Corporation. Soon came the famous saloon, The Golden Crown, With the apt slogan, '1Set 'em up-Knock 'em down. When the managers, LACINA and McCAFFREY, blew into town, The sheriff, JIMMY ZIGMUND, received them with a frown. i At the G1o1den Crown every night can be seen, -'S- FRANCES ESCH, the glamorous bar-room queen. And bartender, AL GIACOMETTI, keeps the bar nice and clean, While waiting on the chief bouncer and clean-up man, AZA-MBER GENE. The barber, SHAN RYAN, someone's hair is ever about to cut. Next door is 'GERWE-RT'S Mortuary-just in case shve ever gets in a rut. TOM GEORGE'S Cake Shop makes cakes both'fruit and nut. Oft times he takes a cake to hermit TOWNER who lives in a hut. The Western Metropolitan Horse Opera House is by DON MANNING run. The chief horse-singing by JOAN MASSMANN is done. The MINGORI Limberger Chees-el Co. manufactures cheese by the ton. While MURTY sells Mingori's customers insurance that's second to none. MEYER'S iF'arm for the town provides all the dairy merchandise, And her horse and buggy delivery girl, STAHL, boasts of no accident more than twice. MEYER also supplies GERANT'S General Store with products nice, E While his blookkeeper, MARY JOAN, keeps the books free from vice. When BALDELLPS Hospital runs out of correspondence supplies, 5 X I I From SIMONCIC'S Typewriter and Office Supply she always buys. fVNf!fV5fSfVVYs Near the hospital, school teacher .SYLVIA, tries to make her pupils wise. But in the librarian. MOCK, there real knowledge lies. WALTER MURPHY professional hunting dogs attempts to raise. He should be giving accordian lessons, like LYONS-that really pays. Then there's the ABALOZ-DOHERTY sing and dance act that creates a daze. Next to LEFI'Y'S Pool Hall, we go for money-making ways. The B.O. Camera Co. run by BUCHE and OBERLEY with camera and case, Has PATTY PATTERSON as their model-she has such a photographic face. Next door is the Golden Gossip Newspaper with McQUADE at the base. BRIDWELL runs the presses and has to keep up quite a pace. This constitutes the entire town of tomorrow. It brings all happiness and knows no sorrow. And as the 4Q'ers did in 1849 We 49fers, too, will find our gold in time. 6,-............. 2 11 KW mMfV5ff?'A7 N- W 'ETH E N'-' -'A N HE if M9 4 'CZ 4 c. 1 E 1 5 -X 4 1 -s 15 x, M 5 W J 5 L S E Ta' X + 1 Q 1 ,X, M., ,.,. .J K. rl -. .K v- P' -., .ww 71... 4, ' Q . . . ,..it.m?QLQ1w:iMZ5,e Mary Eftwxsmes Klum- Lf 'k'.7f5zSiw'? It was our fourth season of football, and our first championship. The Panthers had no competition in league play this year. The closest game was the 27-6 Thanksgiving Day game with second place Mineral. Besides racking up the Mineral Belt League Championship the Panthers laid claim to the Crawford County League Championship by virtue of their victory over the champions, McCune Eagles. The Panthers laid low all opponents this year except the class AA Wichita Cathedral Shamrocks. The Panthers, hobbled by injuries, oculdn't match the pace set by the Shamrocks and came .out on the short end of the score.
