Gllwaa A play ACT I HI' HO' ITS OFF WE GO Scene I The curtain opened on scene one of the first act to find 232 cocky St Marys frosh ready to set the world on f1re Shortly after wards the first day to be exact we developed a severe case of stagefright Our mysterious excursions into the impenetrable darkness of biology Latin and algebra were complicated by struggles with white white saddle shoes those omnipresent berets and the art of con cealing pretzel boxes from vigilant councilors vsearing blue arm bands GETTING TO KNOW YOU Scene II After a few days we began to sense that the upperclassmen did not employ impec cable honesty in their dealings with us We finally gave up looking for the student ele vators and the swimming pool on the third floor By this time those busy act1v1ty days had also become an integral part of our Fri day schedule With never say fa1l will power we plung ed into mid year exams resulting in another great first for 59 the White Clrcle Club Distinguished members Eileen Chris and Ann deserve special recognition THE PLAYS THE THING Scene III Just about this time we woke up to the fact that St Marys has a hghter side Mrs 8 lqiatnrg m Ellnnr aria Sllloway s memorable Christmas play our first Chrlstmas assembly and our very own Winter Ball The Walls of the gym echoed to our happy applause as Betsy Kelly took the throne and t1tIe of queen LABOR OF LOVE Scene IV In addition to the splendid academic educa tion we were receiving Brother Patrick Fran CIS and Mr Loeber gave us valuable vocation al training by respectively permitting us to dlg ditches for high Jump and pick rocks from the softball field Some of our newly found muscles were used to make our frosh basket ball team champions in their league How ever victory did not come easily to our stal warts On the way to one of the games the old faithful bus broke down and the team was politely requested to get out and push for a short dlstance FROSH FOOLERY Scene V and made his Latin and algebra classes thoroughly enjoyable by means of his many Jokes and ad l1bs Our dedicated biology teacher Brother William tried desperately to infuse some knowledge of the subject 1nto our vacillatmg minds despite the frequent lighting of gas Jets water pistol fights and pingpong matches 1n the lab Sister J amesine too thought her biology class was stunmng but we Freshmen knew better How we slav ed over that natlon wide Latm test' Dance ballerina dance And dance we d1d in Mrs Gilbert s modern dance classes Many were those who lagged behmd in the per formance of those rocking horse steps O . , . 7 7 . . , , , . . . . 4 q u , - D , . , I . . WEARING 0 THE GREEN Scene VI Sprlng came and w1th her own speclal green came the green of St Patrlcks Day MISSIOH Day m1d terms and reports flew by J umor and sen1or proms turned a few of our faces green w1th envy but no ser1ous cases were reported We could hardly beheve It but next year someone else would be the stumblmg un known freshmen Ves we were growmg up ACT II GLORIOUS FEELING Scene I Sophomore year found us w1th tanned faces a new d1gn1ty 1n our strlde and an armful of thlck new texts and tldy notebooks As true sophomores we made our presence known to the whole student body and un fortunately to the faculty To add to our newly won stature the umform was off1 c1ally changed to a colleg1ate blue and gray No longer were we at the beck and call of those sophs To celebrate our new standmg we made October 31 the brxghtest mght of the year at the annual Halloween square dance WHAT S NEXT Scene II The year got off to a roll1ck1ng start when John Cueto shaved h1s head for that Yul Brynner effect To further sohdlfy our class pos1t1on as school clowns Walt CaSS1dy and B111 Ph1ll1ps managed to mduce half the school and part of the faculty to approve the purchase of army surplus Jeeps for S35 each Although the deal dldn t go through lt pro v1ded a topic of conversat1on for weeks Paul McDermott was shocked one flne morn1ng when he opened h1s locker and found 1ns1de a freshman Kevin Barry How Tom Vltaghone J1m Magulre and Bob Car bone managed to put hlm there IS st1ll a mystery 9 INFORMATION PLEASE Scene III Try as we m1ght we couldnt get away from the fact that sophomore year meant sophomore subjects One of our clearest mem or1es IS that of Slster Stella MHPICS World Hlstory Classes better known as two out of ten H11dy Becker brought fame to the class of 59 by w1nn1ng the hxstory essay con test sponsored by Everyweek NOT A DROP TO DRINK Scene IV Sophomore year holds other memorles of a few well worn shoe strmgs for 1nstance And there are other remembrances of geo metry class In those 1mmortal words Wat er water everywhere but IN THE CLASSROOM Scene V Of course our class was a very attentlve one Thls attentlon was at 1ts maxlmum ln the boys Plane Geometry class as we scrupu lously counted every therefore uttered by Brother Henry The off1c1al record stands at 156 therefores 1n a smgle 45 mlnute perlod Scene VI As we celebrated St Patrlcks Day 1n school we became aware of a change 1n one of our classmates It seems that Brendan Kelly m the sp1r1t of the day had dyed h1s ha1r and face green Needless to say thxs maneuver met w1th the enthuslastlc approval of the faculty THE OLD SOPHOMORE HUMP Scene VII French class took a new look dur1ng Slster Ephrems lllness when Mrs P1ssell and S1s ter Stella Marle took over her classes Durmg our sophomore year we lost one of our best frlends at St Mary s Slster Clem ent Marle Slster helped us 1n more ways than Lat1n II Through her we learned the beauty of sllent suffermg for Chr1st Her memory needs no speclal tr1bute for we shall always remember her 9 . . . , , 7 s , - 9 .
