The year was closmg m promment fashron when the sophomore boys overpowered the freshmen durm field day at Manorhaven Wrth June close upon Us we prepared for our first regents June drd tell Jamal lunmrs At 'ast' Upper Classmen ' Jumor year commenced under the dlrectlon of a new boy prlnclpal Brother Bernard Gregory On the gurls slde the first slgnlficant change was ln the gurl themselves They now sported gray and llue How proud we were of your colleglate umforms' Some of the homemakers Mary Ann Carew Mary Poa ant Cerrr Burke made thelr own outfits but they just couldn t get the Sklft the rlght shade of gray ln the boys department the first few months ran smoothly untrl a group of assorted ammals appeared 1n the Latln III class Thlstle tubes flasks matches corks and screwballs were about the only characters able to be found rn the lab that year Doctor Carrell must have chuckled especlally when there was that vlolent reactlon Qlt would have to have been H S' The ambltlous junlors spurred the J V basketball team on to the1r second champ1onsh1p The constant efforts of the boys track team were also rewarded when we finally captured our first track trophy 1n jumor year Not many of our jun1or class enjoyed those Les dlCtC6S and La comprehenslon Tlghtened and twlsted but terrlbly rewardlng were those tattered bodles when the cheerleaders were finally chosen Wltlt Elleen as Captaln and Mary as Co Captain our players were joyfully cheered on The cheerlng squad con slsted of Jean Eagan Prls Sellmann Mary Ann Carew onnle Cowley Rene McCarthy Betty Jo Hamllton Elleen Kulakaskl JaCkl6 Koeper Chrlsy Maloney Mary Mlller and Margle Powers Our champlon players are llsted as follows Tom Beasley Pete Pace, Bob Smlth Pierce Hanley Nell DeV1ta Blll Nrcoll Dave Wands and Pete Ross Nelther raln nor snow nor sleet nor hall, could keep the loyal staff members from thelr weekly press conferences The CIP was a worthwhlle course we learned the techmques of journallsm and finally Mary Kravls, John O Handley John Moylan Maureen Maloney Tom Ekkers Brll Dalley, Pete Ross Kathy Rossworn Mary Nlcholas Judy Stradar, Art Sudduth James MOIIIS Judy Healy Howard Burke Marlanne Monarl Rlchard Fontame Rlchard Mahoney Sandra Bondy Edwin Blesch Henry Mrttelhauser Rlchard Magenls John Lombard: Dave Wands Martha Beauduy Jerry Overwalle Sue Morgan Pete Pace Dons 0Br1en Robert Serenbetz Judy Foster, Mary Mlller Mary McDonald and Eileen Kulakaskn were accepted for the Magmficat Staff Because of fierce competrtlon agamst the semors ln 9 the food drlve few of the jumor boys were back rn tlme for the Chrlstmas assembly Dozens rushed madly around to nelghborhood stores buymg and beggmg carloads of corn Hakes As the year progressed a few fortunate jumor lroys were asked to jom a scholarshlp club formed by Brother Phlllp This enth.1s1ast1c group met every Saturday mth hrgh rdeals of obtalnmg scholastrc TCCODUIIIOH ln semor year In february all saw a furlous race w'1ged for the tltle Kung of Hearts and his queen Who ellmlnated the Junlor contender G1bson9 Drdnt Slster Jamesme work hard 1n trymg to form makus or bakus out of her homemakmg classes? ,nl y lass History 1, M I' ascmated Freshmen September 12 1954 the superclllous freshmen ar rlyed Norse clatter chatter bang smash clunk lt yy as qulte an entrance Then rigor mortls set ln The names of the subjects alone would frlghten such happy go lucky grammar school graduates as we were not to mentlon the huge textbooks and th towermg upper classmen The glrls 1n1t1at1on was conducted m court room style and the judges found us gullty on many many counts The Mad Hatter s Tea Party finally found lts equal The freshman unlform conslsted of a blue suit and stocklngs Unfortunately varlety of shades d trac ted from the unlformlty and lt was changed After three yy eeks Brother Nlcholas announced that the boys yyould YCCSIVC thelr first report cards As the yyeek passed fast mdeed they dld yye shy nalve fearful young frosh began to learn the ropes of the school Freshmen year afforded us the opportunltv nf plan nmg our first dance The gym resounded wlth applause for Valentmes ueen ,lean Ewgen and her Km Moco Speaklng of danclng the glrls physlcal educa tion classes were mo t enjoy able We were transed to be future ballermas as we tipped on our toes and twlrled often 1n the an We were a happy sfroup of girls as we gathered together ln the locker room to play hlde and seek rmgalevlo or performmg startlmof jumps the kmd that Mary Nlcholas could not do so consequently we all slgned her cast Marv Poppms yyas expertly portraved by Elleen Granlto as she jumped from the locker tops Wlth an umbrella We kept up the hectlc pace of hlgh school study mg that confounded Latln and running awav from those perslstent semors bent on 1n1t1at1n us Today we wlll be on assembly schedule The freshmen boys are produclng a plav entltled The Prodlgll of Dub lm' How well we remember that work of art bv Brother Pascal and the boys Some of us are still ymondermg lf that clear colored llquld supposedly water that we drank from the colored bottles was reallv water Shall we ever forget Brother Giles famous Latm 1 classes? femma femmae fammae H1 cord vsas just too long to reslst tymg to a desk They ney er dld make the blackboards wxde enough dld they? Numerous actlvltles were m full swmg Food tov and Chrlstmas card drlveel Basketball games were numerous and CXClllI'lg 8 Sprmg rolled around but fast and wlth lt came the St Patrlcks Day parade MISSIOH day Sodallty dance and roller skatmg partles The junlor and SCDIOTS had thelr proms but we dldnt complaln because we freshmen and the sophomores went on an outmg to Manorhaven' Exams came too fast and furlous Mr Ronan a k d us about basketball foul llnes on our final brology test We were ffrowmg up and we were domg lt the hard way We even recall a broken Wll'ldOWV Sophzstzrated Sophomores But ln June 1955 the 197 students and 2 puppy dogs were ent on to sophomore year The prlnclple change m our sophomore vear was the glrls new prmclpal Mother M Paul ,lo eph The unlformlty was brought back to the unlform wlth the mtroductlon of trlple cuffed socks and our br1,.ht new saddle shoes Thmgs were begmnmg to shape up untll Brother Patrlck Francls Latln 11 class turned 1nto lectures on our famous track teams Wlth some tlme to call our own we presented the ultlmate ln soclal events the Square Halloween Dance We soon became acqualnt ed with Father McCoy ern and hls Westerners H was our annual celebrlty What a frlghtemng thought to recall our subjects geometry French World HISIOYV and Caesar The boys never knew there were so many commandments until they had Brother Phlllp Would we conquer these subjects? rostrum once a month We all planned and produced many assemblies Dave MeCarthys idea of a boys glee club became a reality under the dlrectnon of Mrs Edward McCauleV We umted 1n prayer for our beloved ex principal Brother Nicholas Mary who recelved his invitation to go home for h1S eternal reward He was a man lll whom we saw God and surely Our Lady recognized the resemblance and led htm to her Dlvlne Son May he rest m peace A ceremony accomplished the distribution of the awaited blue stone mounted on gold The glrls tmsted one another s rmgs, that IS, for as long as they held on to them The first Mary Day the glrls honored the ueen of Heaven Basketball commenced with a pep rally which filled the audltorlum with strong cheers for the team The cross country track team won 1ts first trophy And the credit went to SW1ft Bob McNamara A week of programs dedicated to Chrlst the King were pre sented durmg Cathollc Youth Week The Chrlstmas Show returned with all its joy I' he boys gambled and the girls sang With a Little Bit of Luck and lt was umntentlonall We went on yaca tlon but it did not keep us away from school We were lnvlted to the annual Alumm dance and pern11tted to mingle wlth the colleglate crew and to get a few polnters Study' Study' they all told us Returning to school on January 2 after the vacation we split our paths For once the bohunks were ln demand as they spent the first day moving desks tables chair equipment The glrls spent the day house cleaning the evacuated classrooms Spmmng wheels shaung baloons eating pizza readlng palms, munchmg cake auctlomng hats, srppmg qokes and vlewmg the stomach of 1ron made Sister Marilyn and Brother Ronald mlsslonary mllllonalres On lHlSSl0Il day thc semor class stepped through a calendar to model the latest fashions The student body was charmed or so they said John Smith coached by Mr Lynch placed first Ill the southern N Y State DIVISIOH of American Leglon Speech Contest and fourth highest ln the lNew York State competition The Senlor boys and glrls were mvlted to be the guests of Cod 1n the secluded silent clolstered re treats at Gonzaga and Ronkonkoma respectively The boys presented their Semor Class Show star rlng Rich Fontame and hls swing band The barber shop t11o of Stevenson Peck and Pace and the well known glee club appeared Speaking of shows there was one that will long remam Ill our memory and lmaglnatlon The inspiration artistry and realistic actlng presented in the Song of the Scaffold will long be remembered Great credit must go to Slster Immaculata and her assistant director Eileen Kula kaskl The professional acting of ,loan Dandrea Fran Rella Pat Malom John Smith and Helen HlClClIl3ll was the talk of the town The annual Father Daughter Dance was a happy proud evenlng tripping to the light fantastic wlth Dad only to be mterrupted by a show III which the senlor glrls gave an l!'lV1tElll0Il entitled Papa Wont you Dance w1th Me? Sports Nlght had 1ts premiere at school thls year The glrls leaped klcked and cheered as the Pirates and lndlans competed agamst the Oklahomans The Sodallty repeated its Communion breakfast the girls repeated Senior Day in a new f3Sl1lOIl they performed their highly acclaimed show Our Fair Student at whlch were presented the Academy Awards Manv tears were shed The ,lumors muted us to Rye Beach where we spent the day fldlllg coasters drlnklng pops cra hmg bumper cars eatmg candy salllng on the airplane twirl buylng hot dogs laugh mg ln the funny house Slltlllg on still seats and re turning home wlth tlred feet but happy memories Then the tlme came to study study for the finals Then on June 19 1958, we Sald our formal good bye before B1 hop Kellenberg Monsignor Sharp the facultv and our parents We worked for and anttcl pated this moment for four years and now we held our passport that admitted us to our future hlgher educatlon the coveted dlploma When dld we meet those frlends at Saint Mary s'7 It seems as though weve always known them When did we come to Saint Mary s'7 It seems as though weve always been here So many thoughts come to mmd good, wholesome fun loving thoughts hard consistent study pure deep sincere personal prayer We re going to miss this holy happy atmosphere We re going to mlss St Marys but we are never golng to forget you St Mary s Cod bless you' WWW' llgmgtlxmynfllll T as A.
