DAY Thank, You, Father Twenty years ago you were anointed a priest forever thus commencing a life of sacrifice and dedication to the Most High God. For seventeen of these years you have worked with the students of the Boys' High School. In the classroom you have guided us along the road to spiritual maturity in- creasing our love for God and cultivating in us a desire for self sanctification. As a friend, you have fostered priestly vocations and given us understanding counsel. Gen- erously you have given of yourself in every respect. It is with pride, with love, and with gratitude that we dedicate this 1959 SANCTA MARIA to you, Father Day. May it long remain a tribute to one in whom are realized the ideals of Christ as teacher, as friend, and as priest! 5 Monsignors Message To The Class Gt l959 VERITATEM FACIENTES IN CI-IARITATE - taken from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Ephesians - is your class motto this year. We are to practice truth in charity says the Apostle of the Gentiles. In our contacts with our fellow men, there are many opportunities to teach them the truth. Unity of Faith is one of these. The Holy Father is preparing to call an Ecu- menical Council with the hope that Unity of Faith will result. There are countless beliefs throughout the world. We who have been born into the one true Church and by training have learned to explain our Faith and defend it have an obligation to do so. We are surrounded by fine, sincere, earnest souls who are looking for the truth. They have not had the advantages that have been ours. What have we done to help them? What can we do? Each one of us can be an apostle. There is no better way to show our gratitude for the Faith than to share it with others. It will strengthen and en- liven our Faith. Charity is love - love of God and of our neigh- bor. Nothing can change the world like love. It is all powerful. It can melt the hardest heart and bring it nearer to God. It was the characteristic of the Saints. Ijust finished the LIFE OF ST. FRANCIS DE SALES - THE GENTLEMAN-BISHOP OF GENEVA. As a boy and a young man, he lived in the hot bed of Calvinism. His victory over the heresy was at- tributed to his love of neighbor. It won the hearts of his bitter listeners. In enumerating the virtues, Our Lord said, The greatest of these is charity. I am now reading A YANKEE PAUL - the life of Reverend Isaac Thomas Hecker, the founder of the Paulist Fathers. You will please Almighty God by directing a well disposed friend to the Paulist Instruction Centre on Park Street, Boston. It may mean the conversion of a whole family to the one true Faith. Let us then seek out an opportunity to enlighten our neighbors and help them spiritually. By our kindness, our charity, our love they will understand that our motive is to assist them and they will ac- cept our offer. Again, let me remind you that we are all apos- tles. In our Catholic papers, never fail to read the article by Father John O'Brien of Notre Dame Uni- versity in which he tells us of lay people who are responsible for many converts often of their entire family. A prayer to Our Lady, The Mother of the Sav- iour ofthe World, to guide you in this trulyapostolic work is sure to bring success. VERITATEM FACIENTES IN CHARITATE. Q. RT. REV. JOSEPH F. Robert Keon, Joseph Sullivan, Stephen Leguori, Barry Meuse. The Marian sodalists have accepted and embraced the opportunity to colla- borate with the Church hierarchy in the establishing and spreading of Christ's kingdom on earth. Papally erected with Rome three years ago, the Sodality has expanded into four distinctive groups, joined together under Our Lady's title, Virgo Potens. With Mary's spiritual help and guid- ance, the Sodality instills in its members the true christian concept of their obliga- tion to their fellow man in seeking to draw him closer to Jesus through Mary. Personal sanctity and apostolic zeal characterize the basic goal of the sodal- ists, for they realize that to be worthy apostles they must aim at sanctity and that to be true saints a manifestation of apostolic holiness is essential. The sodalist is a true son of Mary and a knight of Our Lady. He must be at his Lady's call in eve rything. He must be the guardian and defender of her great titles and privileges. He must fight for her, who destroys all he resies throughout the world. It is to these ends that the sodal- ist pledges himself on choosing Mary as his Queen, his Mother, and his Advocate. J. JOSEPH SULLIVAN BARRY M. MEUSE STEPHEN A. LEGUORI ROBERT J. KEON Unit discussions allow everyone to participate actively in Sodality meetings. MATER BONI CONSILII SPEAKERS' GROUP The newly-organized speakers' group, dedicated to Our Lady, Mother of Good Counsel, is the first joint Sodality-Oratory unit spon- sored at Saint Mary's. Mem- bership consists entirely of socialists interested in learn- ing more about their Sodality and also the basic fundament als of public speaking. Seniors of Sodality speakers' group examine their new emblem 85 Henr P. Mcfrlinche Mission Unit Marian missionaries pack sample medicines to send to the mission fields. Philip Lakoche, Thomas Mazzarini, Martin Donato, Leo Melanson, Peter Hyde, James Gibbons. Henry P. McGlinchey, SJ., the younger brother of our pastor, Monsignor Joseph F. McG1inchey, has appropriately been chosen the patron of our mission society. Having dedicated his life to mission work, he died while working for souls in India. The Mission Unit, designed primarily to lighten the work of missionaries, particularly those in foreign fields, endeavors to contrib- ute both in a temporal and in a spiritual man- ner. To fulfill the first of these, the club seeks to aid missionaries by collecting can- celled stamps, sample medicines, and Cath- olic magazines. During the current year of the group six years ago. The main work, however, of this group is the following of missionaries with their own prayers and through soliciting those of others. By means of an organized program, a voluntary spiritual treasury of Masses, prayers, and acts of self conquest is offered each month by the student body for clerical alumni and for missionaries throughout the world. Just as missionaries are dedicated to spreading the kingdom of Christ on earth, so too these Marian missionaries strive to fulfill the motto of the club, Thy Kingdom more stamps and medicines were collected Come! than in any one year since the inauguration OYS 1, fr 0 .LB !1 an Ali: 6 4 71 2 I- 6-'W if F5 '9 ' sf'm G m 10 mlsrlcio 86 3 rs- C ' xx Hgdeix 'sa 455 X vc . 1 yt, N-A K ui M A .ll fjwvfr A 'NN-, ,, WS. , 'fr .- gf 5: iv NV. From the opening words of the Mass of the Holy Ghost onthe first day of school, to the closing prayers at Mass on our graduation day, the religious life of a Marian is most adequately provided for. As it is ev- ident that the proper perspective in a person's life is the dedication of all things to God, religious activities are by far the most important part of our school life. Standing out as an oasis in the midst of much activity, is the annual three day retreat, on which occasion we are given an opportunity to review our spiritual well-being. As a separate program is con- ducted for each class level, the re- treat masters have a splendid oppor- tunity to counsel each age group ac- cording to its own specific problems and needs. At the same time we have an opportunity to evaluate our relationship with God. 0 if wt. - 480 3 1 I V1.1 X 0 df l 469 M45 305 miigv Seniors participate in the dialogue Mass.
