Football askeiball For the past few years it seemed that St. Mary's had lost its spirit, but spirit and fight are never lost, and this was proved as the mighty Maroons returned to the road of victory. After two seasons of only meager records the Maroons roared back to the gridiron and once again became a title threat. Under the ample coaching of Sam Franz, the Maroons ended up in second place and had the strongest defensive team in the V. P. L. Finish- ing the season with a record of six victories and two de- feats, they lost only one league game to St. Andrew's by twelve points. Even in this loss the Maroons must be congratulated for St. Andrews was the Class C power- house of the State. From this great team a host of seniors will be lost through graduation, along with them goes Tom West- hoff, one of the finest boys ever to leave St. Mary's. Although Tom's heart was set on football, his gridiron fame was never established, because he suffered a frac- tured leg the third day of practice. Besides Tom there were a few other players with minor injuries including McGovern, Kocks, and Quinnan. St. Mary's placed seven men on the All-Valley teams: Walt Krause, first team tackleg jim McGovern and jim Sullivan, second team backsg Roger Quinnan, second team endg Bob Kocks, third team backg Dennie McCarthy, third team tackleg and john Crowley, third team center. St. Mary's promises to be a title threat again next year and live up to the standard of good spirit and sportsmanship. St. Mary 12 St. Mary, Flint . . . Under the tutelage of Coach Sam Franz the Maroons have outfought, out- scrapped, and outplayed their opponents to end up with an outstanding record. At the outset of the season the Maroons were not expected to have their usual strong team, but as the season progressed the Franz-men pushed their way to the top of the pile. In many a ball game the Maroons, finding themselves behind in the late stages, had the courage to fight back and win. Sparked by the Roger combination of Quinnan and Dolson, and Captain Gene Peruchietti, the fighting spirit of St. Mary's was at its peak for this season. Captain Peruchietti, who led all league scorers with 236 points, an average of 16.9 for fourteen games, set a new school record with a total of 311 points. Dolson, junior forward was next, placing fourth in league scoring with 157 points, missing third place by two pointsg and Quinnan, the great little senior center, was sixth with 150 points, missing the first five by one point. The big three amassed a total of 543 points among them from the teams total of 738 for fourteen league games. IN TERMISSION GOSSIP Through the year the sports fans were wondering just what Franz had said to his players at half time. Well, we'll let you in on a little secret. It wasn't what he said but how he said itg and these few words. expressed so well by so fine a coach led the Maroons on to win many a game in that decisive period.
