1- - 4- - Leaders Cvhfl-Iflrlll f,c'fzafer.rbzf- COACH ll .rem'1'cf to fofzezjf. DIRECTOR Rev. Michael Maher COACH john Sullivan REV. MICHAEL MAHER During the summer of 1948 Father Maher arrived at St. Mary's and was appointed Athletic Director. Since that time he has done a marvel- ous job in advancing sports here at St. Mary's. Father, who was a fine participator in sports himself in his student days, is well liked by all the students because he seems to understand them personally. His biggest and latest concern is trying to get the new gym completed before basketball season opens next year. Leo Franz LEO ISAMJ FRANZ In the fall of ,49, Sam , probably better known for his basketball achievements, added football to his illustrious coaching career. His un- usual success continued through football as he instilled the winning spirit that has been a trademark of his technique. His drive and knowledge of football led the Maroons to a winning season. Fame and Fortune has come to St. Marys with Franz. He has proved beyond all doubt that he is the best basketball coach in this area. With no height and little material, this basketball mentor has done what was termed impossible at the outset of the season. Against all odds. he again led the Cathedralites to the V. P. L. Championship. The seniors of St. Mary's wish to pay tribute to a great coach and a great guy, Sam Franz. JOHN SULLIVAN Johnnie Sullivan, as he is known by all his friends, has returned to St. Mary's as assistant football coach. johnnie, in the years he has partici- pated in athletics at St. Marys, has had many winning teams. Again, in 1949, he helped coach another team with a Hne record. Being an assistant includes coaching the J. V.'s, our future stars. These boys are the founda- tion of the teams to come. The Seniors of '50 want to thank Johnnie for all his help and wish him luck. Heres hoping that he returns! 43
