The original standard was designed under the Emperors direc- tion. It is described as a long spear, over- laid with gold, which with a traverse bar formed the figure of a cross. At the center of the cross the letter X intersectd the letter P. From the crossbar of the spear was sus- pended a purple banner with a Latin in- scription, In hoc signo.vinces Cln this sign thou shalt conquerb. Although the term labarum, which is of uncertain deriva- tion, was possibly familiar at an earlier date, it is associated with the above mean- ing. Lafmmm Plzlvfirhea' by ST. The world has undergone many changes, and it is into this world that the seniors of nineteen fifty are graduating: a world filled with loss of faith in God. But we can do something about this, for with Christ's standards of living we can change the world. We have equipped ourselves with a knowledge of our reli- gion and have resolved to put our Catholic philosophy into action. We have studied and dis- tinctly evaluated each subject, for it is our duty to learn and do good with our knowledge. In social affairs we have kept uppermost in our minds the teachings of good social living and the love of our neighbor. A strong Christian spirit of fair play and sportsmanship has pre- vailed in our athletic activities. With this preparation and with the grace of God, we can change the world into a happier place. The foundation has been laid, the building must go on. Dezfz'cafz'011 This, the thirty-sixth edition of the Labarum, the seniors of nineteen-fifty dedicate to the Blessed Virgin Mary, Seat of Wisdom. May she obtain a small portion of wisdom for us, so that we may be guided in the walk of life we have chosen and be Christ-wise in our re- solve to change a de-Christian- izing world. May ll, 1385 February 7, 1950 Twelve years ago when the class of '50 entered the first grade, the recently- eonsecrated bishop was installed here in the new diocese of Saginaw. Now as we are making ready to depart, our beloved bishop has left us. Bishop Murphy worked zealously and earned the right to be eulogized for establishing a well- ordered diocese. Wfe dedicate this section of the book to the blessed memory of him who was our first bishop and our good shepherd. 4 HE PHIESTS UP THE LUHU BLESS THE LUHU The Right Reverend Felix Vogt, V. F. Pastor of St. Mary Cathedral HI SIHVHHIE UI IHI lllllll QIIEE IHI IHHU The giggigfgg, A Fclczzfly T' Ng ' - I RIGHT REVEREND MONSIGNOR VOGT, pas- tor, superintendent, High School Sodality Director, and friend of all came to St. Maryis in 1935. REVEREND EDWARD SZTURMOWSKI, assistant pastor and instructor of religion, came to St. Mary's four years ago. REVEREND MICHAEL MAHER, assistant pas- tor, instructor of religion and Athletic Director came to St. Mary's in 1948. SISTER M. MARTIN succeeded Sister M. Noella as principal in September, 1949. Previous to this time, Sister Martin was principal of St. Mary School, Muskegon. Her ability to settle problems and her fair treatment of all the students is out- standing. When interviewed by a Labarum re- porter, Sister said, It has been a pleasure in re- turning to St. Mary's to work with the boys and girls of my former pupils. SISTER M. RICHARD, teacher of mathematics, has completed her first year at St. Mary's. During this time the students have admired Sister and consider her a good sport and a true friend. Sister came to the Catheral School from St. John's, Essex- ville, and prior to that time was principal of the school famous for its basketball stars. In the short time I have been heref' Sister Richard said, I have formed a good opinion of St. Mary's stud- ents. SISTER M. EULALIA came to St. Mary's last September after teaching the subject she enjoys most, home economics, at Penasco School in New Mexico. Sister directs the Library Club and teaches junior business and history. Because of her gra- cious attitude, the students consider her a grand friend. Sister Eulalia remarked that the students at St. Mary's are accommodating and do not seem to mind inconveniencing themselves for the teach- ers. SISTER M. HONORA has been the guiding light of the sophomore classes in their home room for the past six years. Her pleasant smile and friendly greeting will long be remembered by the students she has taught. Sister came to St. Mary's from Catholic Central, Grand Rapids, to teach her favorite subject, English. In Sister Honorais opin- ion the students at St. Mary's are spontaneous and anxious for intellectual growthg they take sugges- tions and their cooperation is one hundred per cent. SISTER M. MAURICE, junior home room ad- viser, has been a member of the faculty here for seven years. During this time Sister has taught her preferred subjects: history, civics, and soci- ology. When Sister left Catholic Central, Grand Rapids, it was their loss and certainly St. Mary's gain. About the students Sister Maurice said, They are polite, courteous, and generally thought- ful, but, of course, she added, there is always room for a little more studyf, SISTER AGNES THERESE has taught biology, chemistry, and physics since her arrival at St. Mary's two years ago. She too, came here from St. -johnis, Essexville. Sister is admired for her readi- ness to give extra help to students with difficult assignments. Sister Agnes Therese has observed that the St. Mary's students make good use of their gift of loquacity for oral assignments and reports. SISTER FRANCES RAPHAEL, senior home room adviser, has made St. Maryis her home for the past eight years. Before coming to St. Mary's, Sister was a member of the faculty of St. Mary School, Lake Leelanua. Religion and Latin are her favorite subjects which she has taught at Cathedral in addition to English. Sister will be remembered for her help and understanding. Sister Frances Raphael has said, I like the spirit of friendliness of St. Mary's students and their fine respect for the priests and sisters. SISTER ROSE CATHERINE, freshman home room adviser, came to St. Mary's from St. Francis School, Traverse City, in September, 1949. Sister teaches history. In the short time that she has been at St. Mary's, her kindness and ready wit has won a place in the hearts of the students. Sister Rose Catherine has remarked that the students seem to accept corrections without holding a grudge. SISTER HENRY SUSO came to St. Maryls this year to teach instrumental music and to direct the choir and glee clubs. Previously Sister was the music instructor at St. Henry School, Melville, Sas- katchewan. The fine school spirit and the hearty cooperation of the St. Mary's students, Sister says, make it a joy to work with them. BETTY LOU JOHNSON, instructor in commer- cial subjects, joined St. Maryis faculty in 1948. The students will always remember Miss Nelson Cnow Mrs. johnsonb as one of their favorite teachers because of her tireless efforts and her understanding. She told the Labarum interviewer, My two years at St. Mary's have been the most enjoyable of my experience. Hll it iuumis ni mr min 3 rites wr umm r X ' X - 4, . ' CO ved 10 6 QCCCY . DIRECTOR Rev. Michael Maher COACH john Sullivan REV. MICHAEL MAHER During the summer of 1948 Father Maher arrived at St. Mary's and was appointed Athletic Director. Since that time he has done a marvel- ous job in advancing sports here at St. Mary's. Father, who was a fine participator in sports himself in his student days, is well liked by all the students because he seems to understand them personally. His biggest and latest concern is trying to get the new gym completed before basketball season opens next year. Leo Franz LEO ISAMJ FRANZ In the fall of ,49, Sam , probably better known for his basketball achievements, added football to his illustrious coaching career. His un- usual success continued through football as he instilled the winning spirit that has been a trademark of his technique. His drive and knowledge of football led the Maroons to a winning season. Fame and Fortune has come to St. Marys with Franz. He has proved beyond all doubt that he is the best basketball coach in this area. With no height and little material, this basketball mentor has done what was termed impossible at the outset of the season. Against all odds. he again led the Cathedralites to the V. P. L. Championship. The seniors of St. Mary's wish to pay tribute to a great coach and a great guy, Sam Franz. JOHN SULLIVAN Johnnie Sullivan, as he is known by all his friends, has returned to St. Mary's as assistant football coach. johnnie, in the years he has partici- pated in athletics at St. Marys, has had many winning teams. Again, in 1949, he helped coach another team with a Hne record. Being an assistant includes coaching the J. V.'s, our future stars. These boys are the founda- tion of the teams to come. The Seniors of '50 want to thank Johnnie for all his help and wish him luck. Heres hoping that he returns! 43 gram X Football galglilgf, N6okSduuz11-cv I Q-B. After two seasons of only meager records the Maroons roared back to the gridiron and once again became a title threat. Under the ample coaching of Sam Franz, the Maroons ended up in second place and had the strongest defensive team in the V. P. L. Finish- ing the season with a record of six victories and two de- feats, they lost only one league game to St. Andrew's by twelve points. Even in this loss the Maroons must be congratulated for St. Andrews was the Class C power- house of the State. From this great team a host of seniors will be lost through graduation, along with them goes Tom West- hoff, one of the finest boys ever to leave St. Mary's. Although Tom's heart was set on football, his gridiron fame was never established, because he suffered a frac- tured leg the third day of practice. Besides Tom there were a few other players with minor injuries including McGovern, Kocks, and Quinnan. St. Mary's placed seven men on the All-Valley teams: Walt Krause, first team tackleg jim McGovern and jim Sullivan, second team backsg Roger Quinnan, second team endg Bob Kocks, third team backg Dennie McCarthy, third team tackleg and john Crowley, third team center. St. Mary's promises to be a title threat again next year and live up to the standard of good spirit and sportsmanship. St. Mary 12 St. Mary, Flint . . . Under the tutelage of Coach Sam Franz the Maroons have outfought, out- scrapped, and outplayed their opponents to end up with an outstanding record. At the outset of the season the Maroons were not expected to have their usual strong team, but as the season progressed the Franz-men pushed their way to the top of the pile. In many a ball game the Maroons, finding themselves behind in the late stages, had the courage to fight back and win. Sparked by the Roger combination of Quinnan and Dolson, and Captain Gene Peruchietti, the fighting spirit of St. Mary's was at its peak for this season. Captain Peruchietti, who led all league scorers with 236 points, an average of 16.9 for fourteen games, set a new school record with a total of 311 points. Dolson, junior forward was next, placing fourth in league scoring with 157 points, missing third place by two pointsg and Quinnan, the great little senior center, was sixth with 150 points, missing the first five by one point. The big three amassed a total of 543 points among them from the teams total of 738 for fourteen league games. IN TERMISSION GOSSIP Through the year the sports fans were wondering just what Franz had said to his players at half time. Well, we'll let you in on a little secret. Many years have gone by with many different fashions and styles. Of all these years, 1950 heads the list. In the fall and winter, the faculty of St. Mary's must have blinked their eyes once or twice when they saw the bright plaid jackets of the boys - the bold green and reds - telling the world of their warmth and comfort. Jim Schaefer is wearing one as he admires Jean Robinette's new dark blue ski-suit with its yoke of sky blue. The feminine charm of St. Mary's lovely young girls was unmistakable as they glided gracefully through the spring and winter formals in modest gowns of swishing taffetas, shining satins, regal velvets, romantic lacey nets, and billowing chiffons. Accompanying these beautiful ladies were St. Mary's boys in stunning dark suits and dignified tuxedos. Here are two of St. Mary's fashion-wise students. Johanna Mudd wears a lovely chiffon formal while Joseph Dashner wears a dark suit. It was hard to leave winter and its glamor and fun behind but spring came to our school halls. Our smart stu- dents were occasionally appearing in their small-checked suits, their lovely flary soft coats of various huesg the smart short hair cuts of the girls looked as neat and pretty as their new suede and kid shoes. The boys too are style-wise in a comfortable, casual way. The faculty will probably blink their eyes once or twice again. not in surprise but in sadness. For they know that the seniors of St. Marys were not only fashion-wise and study-wise, but also Christ-wise. They will miss those plaid coats, those fashion-wise students - those seniors of 1950. 51 Mother's and Dad's Page Mr. and Mrs. Albert Baumgarten, Jr Mr. and Mrs. Alfred S. Brennan ......
