After graduating from high school, Gene attended Teacher's College for two years. In an effort to carry out his ambition he sought further advancement at St. Louis University devoting his time and energy to studying journalism. After finishing his journalistic course he received a position on the staff of a Chicago newspaper. A similar position in an Eastern city was declined by him but he did accept one which he consider- ed far more important, that of editor of the local paper in his home town. This has always been Gene's secret ambition.
