This has always been Gene's secret ambition. Bernice has traveled many miles to be with us on this happy occasion And she was not alone for she is now the wife of one cf our most brilliant professors in the medical department at Harvard University Soon after graduation Bernice accompanied a group or young people on an extensive tour of the United States expanding her knowledge to a marked degree She is still the golden haired girl of her schooldays We had all been looking forward to the arrival of Kenneth Haas whom we know is enyoying the life of a successful young archi tect Although his accomplishments are many there is one that stands out from the rest and speaks for itself in all its beautv and splendor It is the new St Mary s Church erected at its new site on William Street Just west of its former location After leaving St Marys Kenneth attended a School of Architecture in Chicago When he completed his course he became incorporated with the New York Construction Company and is now president of that concern Kenny has not lost his ability to make us laugh with his humor and wit Leon Jansen is the next to appear in our milst He has changed little since his hign school days except that he has acquired ex- tensive knowledge in his field and is con- sidered one of the most successful agricul- turists in Southeast Missouri. After finishing his studies at St. Mary's he continued his education in the University of Pennsylvania, specializing in agriculture. He now owns and operates a very modern Guernsey farm in Southern Missouri. And now, ladies and gentlemen we trans- mit you to the dining room of the Marquette Hotel where this program will continue. Entering the door of the lobby is Vir- ginia Schaefer. Gin's face glows with that cheerful smile so familiar to all of us as she receives hearty congratulations for her won- derful achievement 1n her chosen field After four yeaxs at the local Teachers College she attended Peabody College in Tennessee majoring in library work Upon completing the course she was chosen from the many honor students for a position in the Congres sional library in Washington Gin had some difficulty in obtaining permission to leave her work to be with us but we Just couldnt miss having her The newcomer is Kathryn Griffaw Suc cess has done nothing to change the easy friendship we shared with her and to us she is still Katy At this event she is .1 figure of great importance because as yo.1 all know she has done the interior decorat ing on the new Church of St Marys After attending College in Cape Girardeau for two years Katy finished her studies in St Louis and began work with a prominent firm in New York Katy now has her own depart ment of work with this company She tool' off from her business activities to be with us today and we re proud to have her with us Wilma French next Joins the group As she greets her friends we again get the 1m pression of grace and dignity that were a i. e 3 3. Her natural ability was recognized and she has been advanced until today she manages one of the smartest dress shops in New York. She is making a tremendous success of it and proving her ability as ll business woman. Lucille Wibbenmeyer, driving her own inexpensive automobile arrives at the hotel door. Still blissfully single, Lucille is now working in the scientific research laboratories at St. Louis University. She attended DePaul School of Nursing atter her graduation from St. Mary's. Her duties were taken up with General Nursing before she was established in the scientitlc lield in which me will recall she was alvnays particularly brilliant At this moment Marjoiie Howenstem enters We see at a glance that Maiiories success has not changed her from that samm fun loxing personalitv When vie received a vine this moimng that she vt as being detain ed in New York we were all sorely disap pointed Then lo and behold if she didnt hop off hex employers prixate plane late ..,Ld..4l-I this afternoon to brighten our spirits. Her reason for being detained in New York was a good one for she had just returned from Paris where she attended the famous 1-'aris fashion parades featuring her most beautiful creations in designing. Last to arrive is Joseph Burger. No, he doesn't live far awayg he lives right here in Cape Girardeau. Then we recall with affection that Butch was always a little late and it just w0uldn't have seemed natural if he hadn't been late today. Joe is still in the bakery business and the credit for the expansion in the Burger Bakery is due to him. He is successful in a mild way and as we look at him he gives the impression of happiness and contentment but then he alxx ays did And novx this station leases you Any broadcast we would attempt to gixe you in describing this renewal of memories would be inadequate So we leaxe the class of 39 to drilt back through pleasant remembrances of St Marys and to discuss their realized hopes and dreams 40811305 X 1 C1 8933. oL4,,f,f , LAJCI-fglg ?,a.4,4,r-1 I fini! Of this number thirteen have perse- vered throughout the twelve years. They are: Bernice Ade, Anna Garcia Braun, Joseph Burger, Kathryn Griffaw, Kenneth Haas, Eugene Hohler, Virginia Hohler, Marjorie Howenstein, Leon Jansen, Earl Ponder, Vir- ginia Schaefer, Alma Stammer and John Wulfers. The class struggled on year by year, with the same number until in the seventh grade we were Joined by Wilma French She has become a favored member of the class She possesses a sunny smile and a likable cheer ful disposition Wilma is studious but could not be called a book worm In the eighth grade we accomplished a great deal haung sales parties art classe and plavs It was during this vear that vue made our Solemn Communion and received our Palmer Certificates At graduation we numbered thirty three Our hopes for th future were xery bright In September 1935 twenty sex en stu dents enrolled in St Marys High School to start their high school career Many of them dropped out during the course of the yea until when we entered the Sohomore year we had lost heauly in numbers This year Lu cille Kelly came from Jackson to enter our Alma Mater Unfortunately she only re mamed a few months but was welcomed back again in her Senior year and is a mem ber of the present graduating class Lucille is quick xsitted and always ready for a laugh If you have heard during the past year the sound of prolonged laughter emanating from the Senior room, it must have been Kelly, In the Junior year, Mildred Martin, from Oran became a member of the class. Oran's loss was St. Mary's gain as Mildred is an ideal classmate. To her goes the distinction of being the smallest in the class. Though small in stature she takes a large and active part in all school activities. In the Senior year our number was in- creased by the coming of Lucille Wibben- meyer from Notre Dame High School in St. Louis. She is a studious and ambitious per- son ranklng high in all her studies She has a sense of humor and delights to get into an argument with the Chemistry Teacher Of the present graduate one who was with us from the beginning was Kenneth Haas known to all as Kenny H is a very popular member of the class and was chosen as president in his Senior year H was captain of the basketball team and proved himself a valuable asset to the team He is sometimes studious and makes average grades Anna Garcia Braun is the quiet reserved type She does not talk much but gets re markable results from her studies She is always a good sport and is willing to lend a helping hand in all difficulties Kathryn Griffaw has been recognized as our class leader When it comes to making a success of things Katy is there to do her part She also never neglects her studies and is '1 high rankmg student Leon Jansen is another of our studious am bitious students He has kept his high rank ln scholarship all through his high school career One of his outstanding characteristics is loyalty to his school and his friends 'ff Q' fffmfff wwf wr ,fr '2:-'-:- .- .f.-A'-f' 3f:.eAJ'v '?:f f'? ..?? , - , . if ,Y ' . . , . e Y , ' 3 1 1 . 1 . . . e , - . e , - . . . She has a cheerful disposition and has become famous because of her ability to be always in and out of trouble. Neverthe- less, we have enjoyed Marjorie's friendship and appreciate her good work. Eugene Hohler is another of the gradu- ates who was with us from the beginning. He possesses a quick wit and is ever ready for a joke. He has his serious moments but they are few and far between. He has ac- quired during the past year, besides learning, a number of feminine admirers in the lower classes. Bernice Ade is one of our less serious students. She is full of fun and laughterg wherever there are good times to be had you will be sure to find Bernice In spite of this she m nages to make average grades in he-' studies Earl Ponder is dependable and always willing to render help where It is needed He has 1 pleasing personality and has always been an ldeal friend He IS the smallest among the boys ln the class but it has been said that smallest men rise to great heights Virginia Hohler is a friend dear to all and agreeable Her ex er ready spirit to co operate has made her a valuable asset to the class She has proven her ability in athletics by playing three yeais on the team She is neat pleasant Joseph Burger was our staff artist and he has contrlbuted much help along those lines to the H1 Lltes Joe IS an all around good fellow and a likable agreeable class mate Virginia Schaefer one of the highest ran mg students of the Senior class has a dn po mon pleasing to everyone She is ready to make friends with everyone and also ready for fun at any time Her fax orxte studv is Shorthand in which she seems to get fax Ol able results John Wulfers is another of the graduates vs ho has persex ered through the twelxe year During the past year John has been the one - to give us the gong and we are sure that he has never fallen down on the job. Alma Stammer is a jolly, fun-loving friend who is always ready to offer assistance when it is needed. She seems to take a great interest in sports especially basketball and football. During high school our studies were many and varied. In the Freshman year we were introduced to many subjects hitherto unknown to us. Among them were Algebra, Civics, General Science, and that much talk- ed of and thoroughly disliked subject, Latin. Since then we found that Latin is a great advantage to us as it is the origin of many everyday English words. We thought the Latin hard but when introduced to Geome- try in our Sophomore year we changed our minds In the Junior year we took up com mercial work Bookkeeping Typing and Shorthand All seemed to like it except when trial balances in Bookkeeping acted stubborn and refused to balance In our Senior year ue struggled with Chemistry a very interest mg but difficult subject Some of the stu dents took American Problems and acquired a knowledge of the problems confronting our country today Our social activities included many suc cessful partles and entertainments Coming back last September we had one thought uppermost in our minds reaching the long sought for goal graduation haxe striven to do everything possible to reach it It has been a busy year with extra 'ictivities as the continuation of the school paper the H1 Lites our play Go Slow Mary our annual year book our trip and other problems but whole hearted coopera tion on the part of all members of the class have made it a success With this synopsis of the class of 39 and an expression of our deep appreciation and gratitude to our teachers for their help and guidance we leave the portals of St Mary and join the ranks of the Alumni It is our ferx ent hope in the future exer to do all m our power to further the interests of our Alma Mater , ! The Freshmen were the next to entertain with a party for the Sophomores. This was their first attempt as Freshies to entertain another class in the high school. But their ability was shown in the delightful manner in which the cleverly arranged and executed party was carried out. The evening was spent in games followed by a de- licious luncheon. A series of assemblies were again inaugurated this year, beginning the second week in September conducted every two weeks. They consisted of varied entertain- ment which was enjoyed by all attending. The first assembly was opened by Father Schuermann with an address on School Activities. Next followed a talk by Father Wiesmann on Financial Conditions in the Parish. The classes provided entertainment by presenting plays, skits, readings and vocal choruses. The Glee Club gave an ex- cellent rendition of some very beautiful songs. Various speakers gave us informa- tion on different professions and occupations such as banking. Perhaps the most interesting speaker was Mr. Reed of the American Legion who spoke on the Horrors of War. His addresses were specific, true to life and so very appropriate consider- ing the war propaganda of the present time that our complete attention and interest was centered on his every word We feel that these assemblies have been a profitable source of entertainment and education and hope they will be continued in the future The last but not the least of the entertainment was the Graduation Breakfast given by the Sophomores On the morning of June 4 the whole student body attended Holy Mass and re ceived Holy Communion This was an appropriate beginning for the day that mark ed one of the outstanding events in our lives It was one way to express our thank fulness to both parents and teachers for the privilege which ex ery boy and girl does not emoy that of graduation from high school After Mass we were royally entertained by the Sophomores with a sumptuous breakfast The school dining room was uniquely decorated with our class colors and the table was simply loaded with delicacies This scene will long be remembered by all those present We gixe our sincere thanks to the Sophomores for the farewell token Our social activities of the past year will long remain in our book of memories for they hate been a great source of enjoyment On the morning of April 22nd the Seniors attended 5 00 oclock Mass before dc parting on their long anticipated trip Following Mass we assembled in front of church and at 6 00 oclock ClOSSed the Cape Girardeau bridge into Illinois At 6 4: we crossed the Ohio river from Cairo to Wickliife Kentucky From Mayfield vse passed through Fairview Hcre we saw the Jefferson Dax is Memorial Around noon we reached Cave City Kentucky where Mammoth Caxe is located After lunch me began our trip into the cave an adventure which proved to be one of the most in teresting features of the trip Some of the important and interesting features of the . During the war of 1812 gunpowder was made from nitrate in the ground of the cave due to the bats--four pounds of nitrate being obtained from one bushel of dirt. The Cave also served as an ammunition storage during the war. We left the Cave at 4:30 and stopped in Middlesboro, Kentucky, where we stayed overnight. The next morning we attended 8:00 o'clock mass at St. Julian Church at Middles- boro. We continued our journey at about 10:00 o'clock, passing through the Cumber- land Gap which touches three states at this point, Ky., Va., and Tenn. The next stop was at Norris Dam where our time was spent observing the work of the T. V. A. projects. From there our travels carried us to Knoxville, Tenn., then on through the Great Smoky Mountains. Here we stopped at Clinging Man's Dome-6,311 feet high. The Cherokee Indian Reservation in North Carolina was the next interesting feature of the trip. The Reservation covers an area of 60,000 acres. They have a population of 3,300.
