Here at St. Mary's we have all the means necessary to develop good Cath olic men out of the boys who enter the school doorsg a program of studies for the c velopment of the mind, sports for the body and above all, the Catholic atmosphere ar teaching so essential to the growth of Chris in the soul. The students in the Sodality d Our Lady are achieving a fuller and finer development in becoming Catholic men. The Brothers of Mary, realizing the impor- tance of Mary in the lives of each of their students, strongly recommend the Sodality to all students---more are joining each yea and many go on to consecrate themselves fully to Mary as Sodalists. These threads of life are strong in the grace of God and safe in the hands of their loving mother, Mary. Of course it is obvious to all Chris- tians that the life of man is without end. lllumined with the grace of God freceived through the hands of Maryj, it lives on in a heavenly splendor, or, without this grace it lives on in death which is hell. This book to a greater or lesser degree tells the story of St. Mary's and the student it forms for service to God and country. T11 school influences the student's character to the extent that he wishes and wills. In cooperation with the parents who in many ways teach more than any school can, the faculty helps each boy to shape his thread of life. On the next page we see the par- ishes which are included in St. Mary's school district for the school year 1956 -57. We begin our story from this point ....... MOTHERS' CLUB OFFICERS: Mrs. Esther Plassmeyer, Sergeant-At-Armsg Mrs. Evelyn Ripper, Treasurer, Mrs. David Sallenbach, Presidentg Mrs. Joseph Weissenberg, First Vice'Presidentg Mrs. Henry Fendrick, Recording Secretary? Mrs. Edward Giles, Corresponding Secretaryg Mrs. Ludwig Huber, Historian. MISS- ING: Mrs. William Saufnauer, Second Vice-President. Mothers' Club The Mothers' Club under the active leadership of Mrs. David Sallenbach has had a successful year. The increase in attendance over past years has been gratifying. Well known speakers and good entertain- ment has been one of the contributing causes, as well as the fact that the mothers and fathershold their meet- ings the same night albeit in different sections of the school. The Mothers' Club, as well as the Fathers' Club has as its main function to cooperate with the faculty in the spiritual, intellectual, and physical formation of the students and this is being accomplished to' a great extent Many valuable prizes were won at the Mothers' Club card party. At the microphone is Bro. Louis Reile, The activities that the mothers have been engaged in dur- ing the year were numerous. A few that should be mentioned were: Spring and Fall Card Parties, Day of Recollection, Christ- mas Party, co-sponsored by the Father's Club, purchase of li- brary books for the school and spiritual reading books for the brothers, Open House, and acting as hostesses at the debate tournaments held at St. Mary's. Helping along with the snacks at the October open house were Mrs. G. Fuhler and Mrs. E. Giles, Back to Camera Surrounded by delicious cakes are Mrs. O. Rohlfing and Mrs. W. Wooldridge who were co-chairman and chairman respectively of the re- freshmentcommittee at the Mothers' Club card party held last November '7th. -.Ji G ' get ' ,, T' ' ge ,At .assets 1 ' 1 fwfr - The following are renewing their baptismal promises as probationers: Dave Schneider, Ronald DeGreef, Jim Barta, Donald Mitchell, Tom Turner, John Gasko, Kenneth Fey, Don Piekarski, Jack Sengheiser, and Harold Johnson. Assisting Father O'Shaughnessy and Father Blemker in the various cere- monies were sodalists John Oberlohr, Harold Richter and Dennis Gleason. Making their acts of consecration and receiv- ing the coveted honor of being full fledged Sodalists are: Michael Bresnahan, James Steinbach, David Blackwell, and Gerard Behnen. odaliiy The Sodalist, as we call him, is not really a full fledged Sodalist until hehas passed several stages of advancement which usually takes him till about the end of his junior year. As a freshman, a mem- ber first proves himself worthy of the position of a Postulant, and later he is advanced to the stage of Aspirant. In his late sophomore orearlyjunior year he is advanceda step higher and becomesa Probation- ist. Finally, at the end of his junior year or his.early senior year, he makes his act of consecration and be- comes a Sodalist in the Sodality of Our Lady. This year the Sodalists were advanced on three different occasions. The first in December, the sec- ond in February and another in May. Members of the Sodality viewing the ceremonies which took place in the school chapel. The Sodalist is not only a man of prayer but a man of action. Grace is aspiritual energy which must have an outlet. Judging from the number of activities which the Sodality has successfully sponsored, the St. Mary's Sodalists and loyal children of Mary and she is bestowing graces in abundance up- on them. Two truly remarkable works of the Sodality were the Mission Rally and Exhibit, and the Christmas Canned Food Drive. On November 30, the Sodalists of St. Mary's performed a man-sized job. With the guidance and assistance of the brothers and the Sodality moderators, the Sodalists sponsored a Mission Rally and Exhibit which netted well over 31,000.00 for the Catholic Missions of the World. As is usual around the Christmas season, the Sodalists sponsored the annual Christmas drive for the needy of St. Louis. With the devoted backing of the student body the Sodality collected over 30,000 items of food, clothing and toys for the needy of this area. l. In the course of the retreat they heard many confessions, were available for private consultations, and answered questions from the Student Question Box. During free time the students were free to read and meditate in the homeroom or in the school chapel. The retreat conferences, masses, and benedictions were held in the school gym. Co-Captains Rich Riley and Don Hutchison Varsity Football On August 15, 1956, eighty seven brave and loyal sons of St. Mary's showed up for the start of football practice for the defending champions of the C. A. C. After meeting the new coaches, Mr, Ed Lucz and Mr. Bob Heslep, the boys started running, tackling, blocking, and laughing at Mr. Heslep's jokes. The team, plagued by many injuries, got off to a slow start by dropping a close one to Cathedral, 6 to 0, and losing to Sumner, 27 to 0. Their next appearance was against St: Louis U. High, and it resulted in a carbon copy of the previous week, 27 to 0, The Dragons next tackled Southwest, but the Longhorns passed their way to a 31 to 13 victory. So, the Dragons started their C. A. C. season with a O and 4 record. The Dragons had fire on their breath as they ran onto the field against DuBourg- for their first league game. The Green Dragons played terrific ball, but lost by aheart- breaking 13 to 12 score. Our next game ended in a defeat at the hands of LaBoure, 13-0. The Homecoming Game against McBride was next, and the Dragon Caravan seemed to be pulling an upset as the half ended with a scoreless tie, but in the second half, the future city champs opened up and won, 21-O. On November 3, the vengeful Dragons racked up their first, and sad to say, only victory 19-13 over DeAndreis. Ir1 the last game of the season, against Mercy, St, Mary's dis- played a tight defense and a wide awake offense. At the end of the half, Mercy had been held to one touchdown. Early in the second half, the Dragons scored two quick ones and were leading, 12 to 6, with about seven minutes left. Mercy managed to score, but missed the conversion, and the game ended in a 12 to 12 tie. St. Mary's ended the season with a 1 - '7 - 1 re- cord. FRONT ROW: Managers, R. Green and M, Ryle, M. They got off to a good start by defeating C.B.C. 21-6 and St, Louis U, High 7-6, Then they came back to defeat a much larger team than their own and did a nice job, especially the line. That score was St, Mary's 6 and Cleveland 0, In the following game St. Mary's B team tasted defeat. They played hard but DuBourg was just too Mike Bogad runs around end- good for them, DuBourg won 21-6. In the second league game they trounced LaBoure 26-O, and later came back to lose to McBride. In the DeAndreis game on a rainy day the Dragons scored the first TD shortly after they got possession of the ball. No further scoring was made by either side and the game ended 7-0 in St. Mary's favor. In this game Harry Wyman scored on a 30 yard pass, A unique feature of this game was that St. Mary's held the ball for the entire fourth quarter. In the final B game Mercy was victorious by the score of 12-6. The lone touchdown was scored by Charley Nash who caught a 60 yard pass from Joe Spenner, The team was rather light with only a few boys over a hundred and seventy. But they had a fighting heart and rhat's what it takes to play winning football. The team had a few injured players namely, Dave Schneider, Anthony Roth, Larry Mclnturff, and Don Piekarski. Dennis Corcoran dropped kicked four extra points. One of them beat St. Louis U. High 7-6. The B team scoredatotal of85 points Dave Pott grounds a Mick i.n the McBride against their opponents 66.
